Netflix

My wonderful brothers and sister-in-laws got me a years subscription to Netflix for Christmas. I am now taking recommendations for movies to add to my queue. There’s a lot of stuff out there I haven’t seen.

Post your recommendations in the comments.

Classics?

New Releases?

Guilty Pleasures?

I want them all!

Thank you.

PS - Normal posting will resume on January 2, 2008 with an awesome debate starring Suburban Kamikaze.

A movie I love was recommened to me was “Wrestling Ernest Hemmingway” I never would have watched that without someone telling me about it. Also, “Gallipoli” with a young Mel Gibson.

    Fav = Princess Bride
Cry = Misunderstood (Gene Hackman, I think in the 80’s), also — Heartburn. Just kill me now.
Laugh = Monty Python, Meaning of Life

Sorry, I have now remembered Misunderstood and Heartburn. I must go cry now.

  4. Grim Reality Girl says:

Harold and Maude was good — thanks GoKitty! I’m almost cheered up.

Great Gatsby — All you need is Robert Redford in the PINK SUIT. OMG.

  5. Java says:

Any and all Pixar movies except Bug’s Life.
Some Like It Hot- a MUST
    The Apartment
The Producers- either from 1968 or 2005, or maybe both to make the comparison. I liked both, but for different reasons.
    Little Miss Sunshine
    Benny and Joon
    What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
well, that’s a start. If I thought about it for a while, I’m sure I could come up with a bunch more. You’ve already gotten some good recommentations, and it’s early yet.

  8. Blackbeard's Wyfe says:

    Classics….Time Bandits, Brazil, Godfather

Guilty Pleasures….. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel Series, anything with Johnny Depp. (Is 21 Jump Street available?)

Just Good…. Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Japanese version of Shall We Dance?, Capote.

Just a few to start with.

  9. Minh says:

Battle Royale, Suicide Club, & Spirited Away (They are Japanese films but you should given them a try. The first two are very bloody and gruesome, yet with good messages!)

    Other recommendations:
Mean Girls (Guilty Pleasure!), Another Gay Movie, Les Choristes, Crash, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Pursuit of Happyness, Billy Elliot, Amadeus, memoirs of a geisha, transamerica.

  10. Ben says:

Definitely watch Angels in America, it’s the best thing I’ve ever seen, plus who can beat Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Mary Louise Parker, and Jeffery Wright all in one movie!

And watch the Godfather, just the first one, 2 and 3 are sorta crap.

    And Royal Tenebaums

    I could keep going but I won’t

  11. Karen says:

I second Les Choristes. Also Children of heaven, Maelstrom, Amelie, Crash, drawing a blank for more…

  12. Michelle says:

Cool. What a great gift! Join my Netflix buddy list!

TV: Prison Break - it’s completely addictive even better than 24.

Classic: The K-9 trilogy. Some of the best dog & his man movies EVER.

Guilty pleasures: Night of the Lepus (Killer Bunnies!) Black Sheep (killer sheep!) How can you get more fun than that?

and Planet Terror, I’ll be raving on my own blog about this one!

  13. GoingLikeSixty says:

Start with the 1001 Movies everyone must see. Can’t go wrong there.
I’ve seen them all, so filling my Netflix queue (odd word for U.S. to pick up) is a challenge.

  14. Dave says:

There are so many, and a lot of good movies have already been listed above. Here a few I’ve recently gotten through Netflix:

Defying Gravity, Walk on Water, Half Nelson, A Touch of Pink, The Lookout, Outing Riley.

    Have fun!

  15. Angel says:

For a great movie that you wouldn’t expect to be interesting but you totally fall in love with, try The Best of Youth (Italian, with English subtitles). And for a cute guilty pleasure cheesy chick flick, Love Actually is adorable.

  16. Polt says:

As others mentioned: Angels In America. Outstanding! And I’d suggest you find a whole bunch of foreign films, independent films that never got a lot of coverage, but are great nontheless. Just start browsing around, you’ll find a whole BUNCH of stuff on thier site yourself!!!

    Have fun!

    HUGS..

  17. Antonio says:

The best thing to do is ask for the email addresses of some of your readers that have netflix, and add them as friends. That way you can see what they are renting and get some ideas.

    Colma: The Musical
    featuring the line “cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunt”

  30. sue says:

Yes, absolutely the Colin Firth Pride & Prejudice! Clear a whole afternoon for that one. Also, I suggest you go on a Betty Davis tear because: 1. Dark Victory is one of the funniest movies ever. Did you know that the character played by Ronald Reagan was supposed to be gay, but he couldn’t pull it off? And I love the line “You’re making love to me!” said to Humphrey Bogart. 2. Mr. Skeffington where Betty, obsessed with her looks, finally comes to love Claude Rains after she loses her looks and he becomes blind. 3. In This Our Life: Betty’s the bad sister, Olivia de Haviland is the good sister, and Betty HAS TO PAY in the end. Are you going to let us know which movies you like from our recommendations?

  31. sue says:

Oh my God, did I just spell Bette Davis Betty Davis? I have lost all credibility as a movie expert. I will go watch Titanic now as punishment.

  40. BOSSY says:

Here’s everything Bossy knows about her Netflix subscription: She puts tons of movies on her queue and by the time they come to her house she has no idea why she requested them — which is why it sometimes takes her approximately a decade to watch the movie in question, which doesn’t really matter because she never remembers to stick the used movies in the mailbox anyway.

Oh well, Bossy likes paying hundreds of dollars for little red envelopes that sit on top of her TV. They’re very decorative.

(Actually - don’t forget the TV shows you never got to see the first time around, like Six Feet Under. That’s always a good bet.)

  41. meanie says:

ummm, i just read the book “not without my daughter” and really want to see this sally field movie now….and i can’t find it anywhere! maybe you could watch it and let me know how it is…..

  42. moosh in indy. says:

Tristan and Isolde. (James Franco and that other hot guy)
A life less ordinary. (Ewan MacGregor)
    Snatch. (brad pitt shirtless.)
    Love Actually. (mmmm)
The Family Stone. (so so so good.)

Barry Manilow: A tribute to Snoop Dog
    Gigli
    Glitter
    Police Academy: Mission to Moscow
    Anus Magillicutty
    And anything with Steven Seagal

  44. Topncal says:

Several people suggested Harold and Maude. If you like that one you might also try the King of Hearts. They have a shared history that not many people know about.

    Gay Themed Movies Musts:
    Camp
Beautiful Thing (all time best gay movie ever)
    Trick
    But I’m the cheerleader

    Great Black Comedy
    Saved

TV shows: OZ - It is like gay porn but with a story.

Tell Me What a Dork I Am!
