Shhh…I have a secret…

Come close, I can’t say it that loud for fear of having my geek card taken away. Are you ready? Blade Runner isn’t that good of a movie. In fact…it kinda sucks. All your life you hear what an amazing movie this is. “The pinnacle of the thinking-man’s science fiction! This is what all science fiction should aspire to be,” people will say. But I say “Nay!” It’s long and boring and never really goes anywhere. And when you get to the end you think to yourself: “That’s it?”

People will accuse me of “just not getting it” which is what people always say whenever you don’t like a boring movie. Kinda like when I make fun of fraternities. “You just don’t like them because you could never get into one!” Um, yeah, not so much.

And if you accuse me of “just not getting it” you obviously haven’t been reading my blog long enough. I’m pretty smart. Yes I love whiz-bang science fiction with lots of action and special effects, but I love a good story more. I understand that you can have all the special effects and action sequences in the world, but without a good story behind it you have nothing. Hell, I absolutely loved The Fountain! That’s gotta count for something!

But Blade Runner was just absolutely pointless. Replicants on the loose. Harrison Ford has to track them down and kill them. But in the end we learn our lesson. They have seen things that humans will never be able to see! We should learn from them! But it’s too late. Humans suck. The End. Oh wait! There’s more! It’s a spoiler of sorts so hightlight to read: Harrison Ford was a replicant! But you wouldn’t know that without reading it on the internet beforehand because the movie doesn’t tell you.

I repeat…I got it. I understood the movie. I just don’t like it.

  1. I think that’s what happens when a movie’s hyped so much.

I have a sister-in-law who had never seen the original Star Wars trilogy, but it was hyped so much she didn’t enjoy it at all.

Well, I had to kill her after that, of course, so I guess I should say “former sister-in-law”.

  2. Okay first off…I utterly enjoyed the fountain. Everybody else thought it was dumb and pointless. They just plain suck.

Second I knew the spoiler w/o seeing the movie, reading about it and only reading what you wrote prior to the highlight.

  3. I have tried to watch Blade Runner twice and BOTH TIMES I fell asleep.

  4. Eh, you think the fifth Star Trek movie was good, so we already know you’re a bit off.

    I kid! I kid because I love! :)

    HUGS….

Wow! You read Ayn Rand? You really are smart! (Unless you just don’t get it.)

  6. HA! Finally. My husband is a sci-fi freak. He trys to sway me to the dark side. There are some movies I have seen and yes, admittedly enjoyed, but Blade Runner was not one of them. He will argue it is great and one of the best movies, but I didn’t like it. It is LONG and BORING.

  7. Kári

Your may have got it but then you got it all wrong. It’s LONG and FANTASTIC.

  8. i have yet to watch the entire thing through.

i loved the fountain! and atlas shrugged. i think i need to read them again.

  9. Erik

I did like Blade Runner, but mainly for the imagery of the movie. If you want something weird but interesting to read check out the book its based off of by Philip K Dick (which is really odd).

  10. I’ve never seen it, and I’ve always gotten that “what?! You heathen!” reaction when I tell people.

It never looked too exciting, but Harrison Ford is enough to make me go watch it. You gotta give Indiana Jones and Han Solo a chance (lets not be thinking about Firewall).

  11. I think people are confusing the movie “The Fountain” with Ayn Rand’s “The Fountainhead.” That’s pretty funny. I agree with Erik, put down the Sith Wars Vol. 893 or whatever it is you’re currently reading and pick up “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.” And while you’re at it, read “2001: A Space Odyssey” if only to understand the story Kubrick so brilliantly (and with much hype) destroyed.

  12. I never liked Blade Runner either. I thought it was boring.

The Fountain grew on me. I didn’t like it at first, but I watched it again, and I read a bit about it, watched some interviews, and I decided that it was a good flick all in all. Very existential. People who want to be spoon-fed won’t like it.

Michael, no, I’m not confusing The F with The FH. That’s what the “unless you just don’t get it” part was about. Sorry about that; if I have to explain my joke it couldn’t have been all that funny to start with, right?

One person’s bore is another’s fascination. While you were looking for plot complexity and advancement, I was finding this incredibly amazing world that Ridley Scott created. Oh my god, I felt like I was in that world, talking with Harrison Ford and Sean Young! I freakin’ loved the characters and the situations. ‘Blade Runner’ is an effin’ work of art!

omg, he was a replicant? I didnt see Blade Runner until may 2 years ago and was not impressed and kept falling asleep.

  16. Ok..but how old were you when the movie came out.
Remember…this movie was before cyber punk and is (thankfully) nothing like the book.

It is good in that it is considered a trend setter and was (design wise) ahead of it’s time…the product placement etc..

There is a lot of movies that THEN were huge and now….eh not so much…but only because things have evolved from then.

    You are clever, my child!!!

They made us watch this movie in highschool, over and over again.

Study it as deep as possible for highschool, I guess.

I can tell you that there wasn’t a single person in the class of 20 who found the movie more enjoyable, as their understanding of it grew.

  18. It’s not the movie as storytelling that makes the movie notable,it its vision of the future that’s so well developed and probably a lot closer to the way it’s gonna be in about 2050 than any other movie.
I’ve seen the first 20 minutes scores of times (back in my stoner days) but never bothered with the rest except maybe 2 or 3 times in 20 years, mostly because I thought Rutger Hauer was hot and I liked Sean Young’s stylist.

  19. What a great blog you have, I have been reading you for a while and felt it’s time to let you know how much I appreciate what you do. Thank you.

  20. Ella

Not to be mean, but Marc I’m curious what makes you think 2050 will be like that at all?

Its just I have heard that before, and read about plenty of times before I was born, when people predicted what the future would be like based on sci-fi.

I personally predict 2050 will be quite like now, except I will be rich and beautiful through buying property just beyond where global warming will raise water to.

  21. Bossy can’t watch Blade Runner anymore because the Daryl Hannah makeup reminds Bossy of her entire punky Bananarama youth.

  22. My husband loves that movie and it leaves me cold.

  23. Jose

Thank goodness you said it…I’ve tried to watch this movie time and time again and it’s a sure fire way to put me to sleep. That and the Wizard of Oz.

  24. I hear you, my man! Blade Runner – good cast – suck the life out of you dull. Right up there with Krull (aka Dull), Logan’s Run, and the Freakin Neverending Story. Oh! And Labyrinth – yikes!
btw, the only bad Star Trek movie was the first, in my humble opinion.

  25. Ack

    YES. THANK YOU.

I just tried watching this for the first time recently and I felt the same way.

    BSG does it better.
