Anxiety

Since I’m an anal bastard, I’ve been setting my iHome to wake me up with the same song every morning for the past 3 years. I worry that if I use a different song it won’t wake me up and I’ll sleep right through and miss my train and get fired from my job and spiral out of control down a deep pit of despair.

The song is Glass, Concrete and Stone by David Byrne. Now if it ever comes on while I’m listening to my iPod on random, I tense up and have to skip it immediately. I can’t listen to it. I feel like a science experiment gone wrong. But then again, that feeling isn’t anything new.

Do you have a wake up song?

I Love that song, It makes me feel like I need to run away to “somewhere”, but I don’t know where “somewhere” is.

I usually just wake up naturally between 6:15-6:45.

  3. David on February 13, 2008 at 10:45 am

    Yes, static.

My clock radio reception is really bad. But it still wakes me up.

  4. FDot on February 13, 2008 at 10:51 am

I use a talking alarm clock that says the time then “Please Hurry Up”. I have found that I do have a more difficult time waking up when I don’t hear that phrase.

Stockholm syndrome by Blink 182. Very trashy and loud! :)

  6. Angelmonster on February 13, 2008 at 11:37 am

No song that makes me wake up but I was totally obsessed with Alanis Moresette in High School and one year I went down to the beach with my family and I swear it was the only song I had in my cd player that whole summer. Still today whenever I hear her sing it reminds me of the beach.

Hold on a minute. You’re an anal bastard? 0.o. What’s that mean exactly? Please elaborate. Enquiring minds MUST know. :)

And you should consider yourself lucky. Try living in an overcrowded metropolis – MY wake up song is car horns. 7 am in the mornin’ and ppl are already stressed out of their minds and honking like a deranged female driver with PMS. Yay!

When I was in high school, I used to listen to a lot of classic rock. When my alarm radio went off in the morning, the station I liked was, seriously, ALWAYS playing the same song… it was Ramble On by Led Zeppelin. To this day (ten years later) whenever I hear that song I think of I think of oxy pads and illicit crushes on the hot football guys.

I know how this goes. I don’t have a wake up song, but a wake up clock. The loud and obnoxious beeping of MY alarm clock is the only that will wake me up, so I take it everywhere if I plan to stay the night. Do you know how weird it is to stay the night at a new flings hosue and have to bring along a big ugly alarm clock with you?

I spent a year using a capella group Da Vinci’s Notebook and their song “My Enormous Penis.” Not only was it funny, but a positive reinforcement way to start the morning. I had to stop and switch to a new song though (Scissor Sisters “Laura” is my current choice) when I got roommates who were sorta prudish.

i had The Moon & Antarctica by Modest Mouse in my cd player alarm clock for a while, and i realized that it was going to ruin the album for me so i went back to the grating beep- at least i already hated it. i still have the same reaction to ’3rd Planet’ as you do to your wakeup song, years later. it saddens me that DB could make a fan tense up in a bad way.

Unfortunately my brain processes anything into my dream so no matter what I choose to have “wake me up” , it always ends up being a fire alarm or a song plying on the radio in my dream world… Am late to work alot! LOL!

  13. Miss Britt on February 13, 2008 at 12:49 pm

    My wake up song is:

Mooooom. I want juuuiiiiiiiiiiice. I want brefffaassssst!!

  14. we_be_toys on February 13, 2008 at 12:52 pm

I don’t have a wake-up song, because I have a stupid old alarm clock that when it goes off, gives me a heart attack, so I usually try to wake up before it goes off (talk about your conditioning, eh?)

  15. polt on February 13, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Songs? Pfft, I sleep right through ‘em. I’ve got an alarm clock with the loud most annoying, most obnoxious beeping/buzzing noise you can imagine. Brings me right up outta bed! I hate it.

Always starts off my day pissing me off…but I’d be pissed off more if I overslept.

    HUGS…

  16. Kellyology on February 13, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Yeah. It’s called, “Mom, can you make me breakfast? I’m uuuuungry!” And my snooze button is called, “Make it yourself!”

  17. Ex Astris Scientia on February 13, 2008 at 2:34 pm

If I set my alarm to music I sleep through it every time my REM cycle must have it’s own soundtrack that incorporates any song heard. So my alarmclock has to be very loud and annoying, much like the klaxon on a Starship. If I had a Phaser my poor cat would have been toast long ago.

  18. Ray Ray on February 13, 2008 at 2:39 pm

My wake up song is “It’s a Good Day” by Peggy Lee. Even though she sounds a bit sarcastic when she’s singing it, which leaves it open to interpretation.

i just discovered your blog and i am head over heals for you!!! i’m a 40 year old comic book/star wars geek and think you are faboo! my wake-up song since last year sometime has been ‘Samantha’ from the Village People movie…it’s not actually sung by the Village People, though. it’s sung by whoever did the singing for Steve Guttenberg’s character. Now that I’ve shared this information i feel even dorkier than i did when i woke up to ‘Samantha’…

A simple beeping is enough to wake me up. Nothing else will, but that sound does. Not sure what it is about it.

I get up at 3:45 every morning, so waking up is crucial — I’m with Weenit — I now can’t wake up to any other sound and I dread when that alarm clock dies…

  21. BOSSY on February 13, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Wait – do you mean to tell Bossy she’s supposed to wake up out of her bed? Like LEAVE IT? Very Funny.

  22. Crazy Lady in Vegas on February 13, 2008 at 5:07 pm

I do have a wake up song. It is the opening to the Phantom of the Opera. If the sound of somene pounding on an pipe organ doesn’t get you out of bed, nothing will.

  23. GoKitty on February 13, 2008 at 5:13 pm

I wake up the the standard alarm clock BEEPING. My pets also jump out of bed when they hear this noise because they know its time for breakfast.

The only weird thing I have with my alarm clock, or just getting up in general, is that I MUST wake up on an ODD minute. If I dont the world will end or someone will die… or both. If I can wake up on an odd hour as well, so much the better.

  24. vuboq on February 13, 2008 at 5:54 pm

vuboq’s clock radio is set to NPR, because at 6:34AM Garrison Keillor starts his Writer’s Almanac and by the time he gets to the Poem of the Day (or whatever) his super-irritating voice forces me out of bed.

  25. Jesús on February 13, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Hahaha, i get the same feelin’ with my “wake up song”, i can’t change it! xD my wake up song is “Nan You’re A Window Shopper” from Lily Allen, i can’t listen to it on my ipod either xD

  26. digkv on February 13, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Well, my wake up sound is actually some weird static-y, what assume to be NPR or traffic reports, I really don’t know, liberal news isn’t worth paying attention to. Anyways, you changed that thingee on top whatever it’s called. I sort of liked your old pics as it showed what your blog was about but at least I can tell that we watch the same exact tv shows.

  27. Meg on February 13, 2008 at 11:02 pm

I used to have “Just Pretend” by The Bens wake me up, and now every time I hear it, I feel all trippy, like I’m having an out of body experience. The same thing happens to me when I hear the intro to VH1′s “I Love the 80′s” because I watched a marathon one weekend when I had the flu.

  28. Jeff on February 14, 2008 at 1:28 am

    Mika’s “Love Today,” naturally.

btw, just started reading about a month ago and looove the blog!

  29. Jordan on February 14, 2008 at 4:24 am

My iHome is usually set at night before going to bed but after listening for a good hour, so I just find the first song that is loud enough to wake me up and i go to sleep. I find that “sodomy” from the musical hair is always a good choice for morning. One problem of course is that song is usually stuck in my head most of the rest of the day, at least through my first class… which is never fun.

Its Groundhog Day all over again…. I got U babe!

  31. Marcus on February 14, 2008 at 8:33 am

I have a zen alarm clock. If you ask yourself, what is that, here is a description:
“The Zen Alarm Clock’s long-resonating Tibetan bell-like chime makes waking up a beautiful experience — its progressive chimes begin your day with grace. When the Clock’s alarm is triggered, the acoustic chime bar is struck just once … 3-1/2 minutes later it strikes again … chime strikes become more frequent over 10 minutes … eventually striking every 5 seconds until shut off. As they become more frequent, the gentle chimes will always wake you up — your body really doesn’t need to be awakened harshly, with a Zen Clock you’re awakened more gradually and thus more naturally. ”
It is a happy way to start the day unless you are like me and hate getting up at 5:40 in the morning….

  32. Colleen on February 14, 2008 at 9:40 am

    “Tout Doucement” by Fiest!

  33. FitnessNerd on February 14, 2008 at 1:16 pm

    Hmm…other Nick’s…must change my posting moniker…

Anyway, my current wake up song is “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics. Kind of ironic, ain’t it?

  34. Spencer on February 15, 2008 at 8:08 am

My wakeup song was “Hung Up” by Madonna.

Slow enough start to wake me up, and if I was extra sleepy, once the lyric’s began I had to either leap out of bed or find the remote to turn that thing down since it was set to get louder over the course of a minute. then I could be lazy and listen to the cd until my actual alarm went off on my phone.

    Thank You-Alanis Morrisette.
I hope it will have some subliminal effect on my day.
