LOL Comment

This comment came from Anthony for my Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull trailer post:

There are certain things I will never understand. Like why people feel the need to criticize classics that are way better than most movies that come out nowadays. I’m referring of course to the completely unnecessary and innappropriate trashing of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on here. As a little kid, the three Indiana Jones movies and Star Wars movies inspired me to want to be a filmmaker and were my first exposure to the full range of joy and wonder that are only possible in the movies. Even as I got older and matured, all through my teenage years, I never had a second thought about there being anything wrong with Return of the Jedi, or Ewoks, or Temple of Doom, or that something’s wrong or “uncool” about your taste if Empire isn’t your favorite SW flick. Then I go on the internet recently and find that those ideas are insisted upon by almost everyone who uses the internet as their soapbox. SHUT UP YOU INGRATES! Stop trying to change the way I perceive my most cherished films from my youth! Go watch Atonement and leave the real fans of Temple of Doom and Jedi alone to appreciate those movies the way they deserve. And no, I’m not on Lucas’ payroll and even I was greatly dissappointed by the SW prequels.

LOL! How am I trying to change his perceptions of the movie? Shouldn’t he be confident enough in his opinions to withstand a little criticism? Doesn’t he sound like one of those people that are anti-gay-marriage, because if we let gays get married, it will ruin marriage for everyone else? As if their own feelings for their spouses aren’t enough to sustain the sanctity of their marriage, they need the government to stand behind them and say: “Yes, this is a good movie marriage! This is how all movies marriages should be!”

He actually told me to watch Atonement! ACK! That movie was awful! Does he think I’m a film snob or something? Doesn’t he know I own Catwoman on DVD and that the Look Who’s Talking movies (Yes, all 3 of them!) are my most favorite guilty pleasures of all time?

And then his last statement: “And no, I’m not on Lucas’ payroll and even I was greatly dissappointed by the SW prequels.”

Really, Anthony? Because I actually really liked the Star Wars prequels. Does that mean I get to berate you for your opinions too? Yay! Everyone wins!

(Except for people who have to sit through Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. They lose two hours of their lives. It really is a sucky movie.)

Gay marriage won’t ruin marriage for everyone else. It will just make it harder for closeted married men to cheat. So, yeah, it’s kinda ruining straight marriage.

I may just give up hoping for gay marriage and go marry a tree. A nice spruce somewhere. Unless that would ruin nature.

    I’m so confused.

People are entitled to their opinions, even when they’re incorrect.

As to the movies…Atonement was dull, Temple of Doom was the worst of the 3…and while I don’t own Catwoman, I do own Batman and Robin, so that must count for something.

Oh Gawd, Anthony has shown me myself. I was totally hatin on those who dissed The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but Anthony has shown me I just need to chill and enjoy it; even if other people don’t know how fabulous it is.

If you announce your opinion in public, you by default open yourself to comment. If you don’t want people to comment on your opinion, don’t open your trap.

Odd enough my brother just ranted on this topic.

  • By Trev, February 28, 2008 @ 1:45 pm

Though his tone could use improvement, I get what he’s saying. Sometimes it feels like people say they hate Temple of Doom just because everyone else says they hate Temple of Doom, which, I shamefully admit, I watch more than either of the other two on DVD. Ditto for the Ewoks, whom everyone I knew loved until the Internet became popular. Now everyone makes fun of the Ewok song…whatever. Both films are light years beyond every summer blockbuster for the last 20 years…at least.

  • By Craig, February 28, 2008 @ 1:56 pm

Did Croxis just smack me down and refer to my mouth as a “trap”?

People are more than welcome to comment on my opinions. But if they do it in such a rude manner, I reserve the right to mock them.

Wow, you really got Anthony’s panties in a bunch. After the first few sentences, all I got was wah, wah, wah.

I liked the tv show Quarterlife that aired Tuesday night. It’s now being cancelled before the second episode. Anyone want to come tell me what a loser I am?

  • By sue, February 28, 2008 @ 2:21 pm

I sometimes wonder if there is such an uproar about gay marriage because secretly people are afraid gays won’t get divorced at the same rate as straights. How that would be spun is interesting to imagine.

  • By Antonio, February 28, 2008 @ 2:30 pm

    I like turtles.

I just love people who can’t stand criticism of their favorite movie/band/whatever. So often they just start screaming “New Kids On the Block are the coolest evar! You need to shut up with your hating on NKOTB and stop trying to convince me their cum-guzzling closet cases!”

As a former professional theatre/movie critic, I firmly believe that if you can’t reasonably defend your adoration of art (even if it’s just “it meant something special to me”), then you can’t complain when other people criticize it.

Shakespeare Said : TAKE, O take that trap (those lips) away,
    That so sweetly was forsworn;
And those eyes, the break of day,
Lights that do mislead the morn!
    But my kisses bring again,
    Bring again;
Seals of love, but seal’d in vain,
    Seal’d in vain!

Like Trev, I too see what Anthony was trying to say, amidst the whining. The problem is (and I was instructed on this many years ago but a friend when I was making this social error) that we should say “I think ‘Temple of Doom’ is the suckiest waste of 2 hours in the history of cinema” instead of “‘Temple of Doom’ IS the suckiest waste of 2 hours in the history of cinema.”

We insult people if we state our opinions as absolute truths, which they are not. Anthony has every right to love TOD and you and hundreds of thousands of others have every right to revile TOD. But no one is right or wrong.

And like Antonio, I too love turtles. And ponies.

Felt like feeding a troll today I see.

I’m kind of surprised that someone actually liked Temple of Doom … hm.

I’m also VERY glad that I’m not the only one who enjoyed Catwoman. Srsly, it was such a fun flick … and it had Benjamin Bratt in it. What’s not to like?

  • By Thomas B., February 28, 2008 @ 5:52 pm

Alright, now I have to go and watch Temple Of Doom, because I was so small last time I saw it that I need to refresh my memories, as it clearly appears from this post that it is essential to have an opinion on this movie. I believe Craig has got every rights to express any kind of opinion (in a reasonable way of course) even if he does so using general statements instead of “I think…” sentences. I mean, it is HIS blog after all isn’t it ? Anthony has also got every rights to express his disagreement, but how about not being that rude ? And if he really loved Temple Of Doom that much, how about browsing among the thousands of other blogs out there and find one he shares ideas with, instead of wasting his time trashing poor Craig’s funny reviews ? Enough quarelling I say, go check out my FABULOUS muffins instead :)

PS: I didn’t hate Atonement, does this make me a terrible person, is Anthony going to spank me ?

    Catwoman on DVD?

Tell me you don’t own The Wedding Planner.

  • By srah, February 28, 2008 @ 6:10 pm

    Temple of Doom sucks.

But so do the Star Wars prequels!

  • By kate, February 28, 2008 @ 7:14 pm

Temple of Doom was worse than Godfather 3. Well, no. 75% of Temple of Doom was worse than Godfather 3.

Kate Capshaw is one of the worst actresses ever.

Hmm…who was worse: Kate Capshaw in ToD or Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3? I don’t even know if there’s a right answer to that.

  • By crunchycarpets, February 28, 2008 @ 10:25 pm

I will still stand by the opinion that if you LIKE Temple of Doom you never ever go the whole Raiders idea in the first place.

I saw Raiders when I was 12. It blew my mind.
Even at that age I ‘got’ it.

    It was a perfect movie.
It was an homage to all the fun classics..the Chuck Hestons, the Stewart Grangers.

You can tell that the majority of people who made Raiders good had no part of Temple…

Even as a teen I was horrified.

If you like it great….but you have to understand why people who LOVED Raiders HATED it and still do.

Opinions are like bellybuttons, everyone has one. However some bellybuttons are full of lint and nasty smelling things.
As far as enjoying bad movies, I just love “Female Trouble” by John Waters. It’s my most guilty pleasure but how could you hate on a movie that has the following line:
“I wouldn’t suck your lousy dick if I was suffocating and you had oxygen in your balls!”
haha I think I’m going to go put it on right now!

  • By BeRightBack, February 28, 2008 @ 10:58 pm

Stop having opinions that aren’t mine! Disagreeing with what I just said makes you a hypocrite! Ranting like this in your comments section reflects extremely well on me as a thinker and person!

…ps: For cereal though, I really liked Atonement. And Female Trouble is not actually a bad movie — it’s a genius movie in bad movie disguise.

  • By we_be_toys, February 28, 2008 @ 11:19 pm

Yeah it is, man! Damn Temple of Doom is totally out of synch and character with the other two Indiana Jones movies. I think it may have even been ruled as such by the Supreme Court, around 1997. Maybe,…I’m just sayin’!

  • By croxis, February 29, 2008 @ 12:15 am

No my dear hunky Craig, it was a general statement. I dread the day I teach evolution in public schools as suddenly I might have to “respect” the opinion of Intelligent Designers. Baby Buddha forgive me if I prove homeopathy and the moon hoax wrong too.

  • By Derek, February 29, 2008 @ 12:38 am

There were no Nazis! Plain and simple fact, Indiana Jones needs his Nazis.

  • By Howard, March 3, 2008 @ 11:33 am

I loved Temple of Doom and still do. It’s my favorite of the first three and will watch it despite your criticism of my opinion. So :-P to you, Mr. Man.

    Gaaaaa!

Any film that forces a new rating to be created is totally cool with me. :)

i was born in the summer of 71, so therefore i was a very impressionable girl when raiders came out. sitting in that dark theater with my dad i fell in love with movies. and i developed an incredible crush on harrison ford.

so imagine my confusion when i finally got to see the long awaited sequel. even at such a young age i hated the movie. couldn’t understand how the magical people in hollywood could let me down that way.

have to admit, i am kind of glad that most people hated temple of doom. no matter how much i wanted to love it, i just didn’t. as a young girl it bothered me that i hated it so.

man, how about your site is all like going to group therapy? lol
