How was your weekend?

March 10, 2008
By

The debacle I have every Monday morning:

Coworker: Hey Craig! How was your weekend? What did you do?

Craig: My weekend was great! I finally got around to alphabetizing my DVD collection. That’s really been weighing on my mind! I didn’t even incorporate the new ones I got for Christmas until now! Crazy, right?

Coworker: Crazy alright.

Craig: I gave some serious thought to separating the unwieldy TV boxed sets from the normal movies, to make the shelving situation more manageable. I mean seriously, what were they thinking with that Rambaldi Cube?

Coworker: Rambaldi. Right.

Craig: Yeah. But then I decided it was best to keep everything together and in alphabetical order.

Coworker: Uh-huh.

Craig: Because if I separate the unwieldy TV boxed sets, does that mean I have to separate the unwieldy movie boxed sets like Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park also? If I do that, where does it end? It could get out of hand! Know what I mean?

Coworker: Um…sure.

Craig: Apartheid! LOL!

Coworker: What?

Craig: Apartheid! LOL!

Coworker:

Craig: You wanna grab lunch later?

Coworker: No, actually, I’m pretty tired. I’m gonna go to bed.

Craig: But it’s 9 in the morning.

Coworker: Yeeeeee-up.

Coworker 2: Why do you talk to him?

Coworker: It’s the sacrifice I made for Lent. After Easter that dork can suck it.

Surely the last bit would go..

“Coworker 2: Why do you talk to him?

Coworker: ‘Cause he’s so goddamn cute!”

    :P x

  2. Dave S. on March 10, 2008 at 5:45 am

Everybody knows you *never* separate the unwieldy box sets and disrupt the alphabetical flow. I can’t believe the thought even *crossed* your mind, Craig.

    Sheesh.

  3. Avitable on March 10, 2008 at 7:21 am

You have the Rambaldi box, too? I love that box set!

  4. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 7:28 am

    Thanks Grogipher!

Yup. I had only watched Season 4 live when it was on. Then I got the Rambaldi Box, watched the whole series in the time span of a few months, and my world was complete. It was awesome.

  5. David on March 10, 2008 at 7:33 am

    This happens EVERY Monday?

    Like Groundhog Day?

  6. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 7:38 am

Yup, right after waking up to “I Got You Babe”.

    Such a great movie.

  7. Brett on March 10, 2008 at 7:55 am

I see V for Vendetta is right on top of Veronica Mars. Just makin’ sure you’re really alphabetizing.

  8. Maggie on March 10, 2008 at 7:56 am

Are you trying to say that maybe there is something wrong with doing such an activity? Not that I would ever be doing that….*cough* *cough*

  9. maestro on March 10, 2008 at 7:58 am

You know I put DVD’s in handy dandy leather bound CD holders (200 in ea) I seperate the TV from the movies and keep them alphabitized. I have thought about not keeping them in order but then I would have to make a sheet with all the DVD’s listed and what holder and page they were in and that is just a nightmare. I think I maybe a disturbed. :)

  10. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 8:00 am

Brett, the side with my hand is the bottom. So if I stood them upright, V for Vendetta comes after Veronica Mars, then followed by Voltron and Walking with Dinosaurs. Or are you saying that V for Vendetta should go first since V is the first word of the title?

  11. Brian F. on March 10, 2008 at 8:02 am

You can give up sanity for Lent?

I’ve been giving up compassion and just typically saying whatever comes to mind as a result. I may have to try this giving up sanity thing.

  12. Colleen on March 10, 2008 at 8:15 am

(Read the following in a sing-songy voice) I see Ugly Betty Season One in your pile!
Strange how coworker and coworker 2 sound a lot like Marc and Amanda from the show…

  13. Brett on March 10, 2008 at 8:58 am

    Uhhhhhmmmm – Apartheid! LOL!

  14. FDot on March 10, 2008 at 9:07 am

Well, I actually started doing the same thing yesterday. My main problem is all the VHS tapes I own of movies not on DVD. Do I combine the two formats together? Do I have to create 2 seperate alphabetic piles?

  15. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 9:20 am

FDot – I’m not crazy about the idea of mixing DVD and VHS. VHS should be taped up in an old box and put downstairs and only taken out in case of emergencies.

  16. justin on March 10, 2008 at 9:37 am

See, the problem with taking DVDs out of their cases and putting them into a binder is that if you get more of a letter, then you have to take each DVD out of the holder and move it. You might end up moving hundreds of DVDs just to add one disc.
You can try to leave extra space, but you can never really leave enough.
You could abandon “in letter alphabetization” and just make sure all A’s are together, etc, but thats no fun once you start to have alot of movies.

And… I agree with Grogipher, I would probably talk to you all day long cause you’re just so nice to look at!

  17. sue on March 10, 2008 at 9:54 am

You’re not trying to tell us that the only friends you have are internet friends, right? Not that internet friends aren’t nice, of course.

  18. Evolving on March 10, 2008 at 10:04 am

See, but you ADMIT to being a dork. Self proclaimed Dorkism means that you are not a dork at all. It’s like if you walk around saying your an alcoholic, then you probably aren’t. Unless your saying it at a meeting…Wait, this logic seems flawed. Just go with it, kay?

  19. Nick on March 10, 2008 at 10:29 am

I get excited if my DVDs actually make it back into the right box. It was very weird when I found a DVD from the 6th Season of Buffy in the box for The English Patient…

  20. jozet at Halushki on March 10, 2008 at 10:36 am

    Lol!

How about next Monday, tell Co-worker that you’ve created an interpretive dance piece to represent your weekend’s events.

    Everyone loves interpretive dance.

Oh! And the following Monday, you can mime your answer. The possibilities are endless!

  21. Jere on March 10, 2008 at 11:09 am

When I moved out of the spacious bedroom in my parents’ basement (I was almost 30, it was time) to the tiny closet that is my room in San Francisco, something had to go. I settled on losing the DVD cases, CD cases, and related furniture. Yes, adding new DVDs to the binder means moving hundreds of other DVDs, but I just set aside one Sunday every other month to re-alphabetize.

Okay “set aside” is a lie. “Find myself home alone, bored, with no friends to call” is probably a more apt description.

  22. Jimmy on March 10, 2008 at 11:13 am

Very sad…but i did the samething…broken down by genre then alphabetical order…

  23. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 11:15 am

I don’t know if I could give up on DVD cases. While the idea of having everything in a single, easy to manage CD case is appealing, the thought of moving them all around when I have to add one is scary. Plus I love looking at a neatly organized shelf of DVDs.

  24. Jere on March 10, 2008 at 11:23 am

V for Vendetta comes after Veronica Mars, then followed by Voltron and Walking with Dinosaurs. Or are you saying that V for Vendetta should go first since V is the first word of the title?

Ack! Yes! “V” is it’s own word and definitely comes before “Veronica.” Anything else will lead to utter chaos. You might as well file The X Files after Xanadu!!! Surely you can see what madness this be…

  25. Amanda on March 10, 2008 at 11:23 am

Mine are alphabetized too, but I don’t have the TV shows integrated, they have their own case.

  26. Jere on March 10, 2008 at 11:32 am

single, easy to manage CD case…

What? No. It’s more like 6. 3 for movies, 2 for TV shows, and 1 for porn. Still, easier to transport than 500 DVD cases.

  27. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 11:37 am

A whole case dedicated to porn? If I ever make it out to California, I’m totally coming over for porn night.

  28. sue on March 10, 2008 at 11:43 am

You understand that any documentaries need to be sorted by dewey decimal number, right? That includes documentaries about porn.

  29. Jere on March 10, 2008 at 11:54 am

I was the editor of a gay newspaper for about 5 years. One of our columns was a monthly porn review. As a result, we got more screener films than I ever thought possible. Most of them were really bad, though.

  30. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 11:56 am

You say that as if bad porn is a negative thing. Bad porn is even better than good porn! Bad porn is perfect for mixed sex viewing with loads of friends and snacks!

  31. Josh on March 10, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Omg i had that same dilemma- i ended up separating the TV from the movies and keeping the big box movie sets with the other movies though
btw i have that same batman box set- batman kicks ass! lol

  32. chamblee54 on March 10, 2008 at 12:27 pm

With DVD taking over, you can buy all the VHS you want dirt cheap. With yard sale season fast approaching, there will be plenty of cheap movies to add to the collection. Since I seldom watch tv anyway, the collection I have now will last a long time. The idea of alphabetical order does sound appealing. Of course, there are all those homemade tapes with five movies each, and I don’t know what to file those under. Maybe s for stolen, or b for blank, because they were blank tapes when they started. Those are really cheap at the sales, and I have seen some great movies that I had never heard of on those.
There is a line below the box…Comment moderation maybe active, so there is no need to resubmit your comments….How can you tell if comment moderation is active or passive? Is it if the blogger is active or passive? What if he is versatile? Versatile is really the way to go…it is one advantage men have over women.
And what about Blue Ray? Is it really going to make the DVD thingies we have now obsolete? Will DVDs be dirt cheap in yardsales soon?

  33. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 12:42 pm

Chamblee – There is no comment moderation going on. That line is part of the template. I’ve been meaning to take it out. But am obviously too busy rearranging my DVDs.

  34. Grogipher on March 10, 2008 at 1:12 pm

That’s obviously of much greater importance! :D x

  35. Matt on March 10, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Thank you for bringing more public attention to a very complex and important issue! There is …. should be … much more debate on whether TV shows get integrated into the alphabetizing! Plus, what do you do with disc boxes that don’t fit at ALL? Like the Blade Runner box, or puffy packaging around Northern Exposure? Obviously the answer is buy a different shelf that will support the alphabetizing scheme desired.

Also three cheers for Ugly Betty, Alias, and bad porn!

  36. Dave S. on March 10, 2008 at 2:20 pm

You guys are making me feel wierd for not owning any porn to alphabetize…

  37. Simon on March 10, 2008 at 2:35 pm

I wish I had to the courage to alphabetise my DVDs but it would take far too long.
The only organisation I have is with my Disney DVDs (Chronological)and my Doctor Who DVDs (Chronological).

Anyone want to get some porn so I can alphabetise them?

  38. Derek on March 10, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Oh Craig… lmao. This post kicked ass.

One of my biggest challenges when I was organizing my DVD’s was whether or not Firefly and Serenity should be separated or kept together. Then I just decided to reorganize the entire collection based on Genre and then series, so it solved the problem.

  39. Craig on March 10, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Derek, I had that same exact problem!

  40. Grogipher on March 10, 2008 at 3:58 pm

In other news, how do I get a wee photo next to my name? x

  41. Jordan on March 10, 2008 at 6:14 pm

So I just glanced at my DVD tower and realized it is completely out of alpha order. I mean I have arrested development next to dead like me. This needs changing, unfortunately it’s almost finals and I don’t have any time for dvd organization.

Also I’m jealous of the amount of DVDs you have.

  42. Nate Reed on March 10, 2008 at 10:52 pm

sort by genre then date within a series, then alphabetize the groups.

  43. Nate Reed on March 10, 2008 at 10:55 pm

also where did you get the black dvd wall-unit?

  44. Tracy on March 10, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Not only do I keep my DVDs alphabetized, I also keep all of my CD’s separated into different categories (Pop, Soundtracks & Showtunes, Windham Hill, Holiday), then they are alphabetized by artist, and if there is more than one title by an artist, the CD’s are arranged by release date. I’ve been known to spend an entire day reworking my catalog. It’s about as OCD as I get.

  45. Craig on March 11, 2008 at 4:18 am

Nate – It’s not so much a wall unit. It’s two narrow DVD shelves pushed next to each other. I got them at Bed Bath and Beyond.

  46. Jimmy on March 18, 2008 at 11:36 am

    475 Craig….475….
