Congratulations on the feature. That is a handsome photo.

My feelings about "Pride" are complicated. For rather more than a few years I was closeted and homophobic. I had to work through that.

Making real gay friends, and coming to respect those people for who they were (beyond just being gay) helped me overcome my homophobia the most.

Two years ago I went to my first Pride in NYC as a semi-out gay man. Sure there was lots of craziness I could not relate to, but for me, at the time, there was also a feeling of being a part of an accepted community. I valued that then.

On the train home that evening there was a rowdy group of drunken gay kids. They were shooting inflated condoms all over the train and just being loud and obnoxious while waving their rainbow flags all over the place.

When I got off the train I heard a (presumably) straight young couple in front of me say they were glad they "did not have fags like that in their town."

Pride celebrations have ups and downs. Individuals living with integrity are the best emissaries for the any community.

"and I certainly don’t need to make changing people’s viewpoints my full time job"
I like that bit a lot.

And Mark: lol

Jere: That will never happen. At least not until I get my Super Viagra and Vagina Girl deal from Marvel. Then you can all suck it.

(Can't you picture Stan Lee loving Super Viagra and Vagina Girl?)

Congrats. Your celebrity is ever increasing. Soon you're going to be one of those bloggers who doesn't have time to read all the comments and never responds to people anymore.

I got through, and I totally agree with what I think you were saying. Most people will respect you for who you are if you just be yourself in your daily life, not hit them over the head. Nothing against pride parades, but I prefer to parade through life daily, just being my self. Hell, I've even got "redneck" guys who accept me just because they know I'm just "another guy", their comment not mine.

This from a 44 yo who just came out last year. Hah!

Pride is all about respecting yourself "and" others.
