Jill Sobule
Everyone is going nuts for the Katy Perry song “I Kissed a Girl”. It may be catchy and all, but it is a total rip off of the Jill Sobule song of the same name, which is a million times better:
Jill Sobule is also the singer of my theme song “Supermodel”:

Y’know, when I first heard that song (which, admittedly, wasn’t that long ago — I’m a bit behind on pop music apparently), I thought there was a sense of familiarity to the title, and I kept thinking of a sweet, Juliana Hatfield kind of voice. But at the time didn’t really know why. Then when you pointed out this video, I was like “A-ha!” (the exclamation, not the band) — I wasn’t nutty after all! Well, not about *this* anyway.
And if you have to keep rescuing Harley, you’ll *never* be a supermodel with all that scar tissue…

Thank you. I haven’t even heard the Katy Perry (which I will have to do now) song and I have been thinking every time I hear the hype is “didn’t Jill Sobule do this about 10 years ago?”.
By john, July 25, 2008 @ 8:23 am
I’ve now officially listened to the Katy Perry song and agree with Craig. Jill Sobule did it better.
By Craig, July 25, 2008 @ 8:26 am
Thanks John! I’m always right! Katy’s version is so generic. Bleck. Jill’s is fun and crunchy!
By Avitable, July 25, 2008 @ 8:40 am
I love Jill Sobule and have that CD, and I like her version much better than Katy Perry’s.
By Miss Britt, July 25, 2008 @ 8:41 am
This is the first time I’ve heard the Jill Sobule song – and it is pretty great.
Watching that Supermodel video… I suddenly want knee socks to be in style.
By Craig, July 25, 2008 @ 8:47 am
Avitable: I can’t say for certain, but I think the fact that you own the Jill Sobule CD makes you a tad gay.
Miss Britt: It makes me want to watch Clueless. I was promised a new Clueless with Mean Girls. I was not pleased, and it tarnished my Mean Girls experience because I was expecting Clueless greatness.
By Avitable, July 25, 2008 @ 8:51 am
I also have Juliana Hatfield, Liz Phair, Concrete Blonde, and the Indigo Girls. I actually think I’m a lesbian.
By Craig, July 25, 2008 @ 8:57 am
Lesbians are so hot. They like, do stuff to each other. Frickin sweet.
By Avitable, July 25, 2008 @ 8:57 am
Totally.
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 9:27 am
I hope this doesn’t tarnish my Puntabulous citizenship, but I’ve never seen Clueless. Though I’ve always wanted to, if that counts for anything…
Craig: I swear your last line sounds straight outta Superbad.
By Coty, July 25, 2008 @ 9:39 am
I would totally read your post more in depth, but Miley Cyrus is on the Today show…Miley trumps Craig. Sorry!
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 9:47 am
Whoa, there, Coty. Paradigm shift. Miley over Craig? Next thing you know, you’ll be telling us you’re forsaking Project Runway for The Suite Life of Zack and Cody…
By GoKitty, July 25, 2008 @ 9:47 am
Dave – You must get off the interwebs now and go rent Clueless (or stay on the interwebs and rent Clueless). Its a staple of modern cinema.
By Coty, July 25, 2008 @ 9:49 am
Psh, no. I’d obviously TiVo Project Runway, duh.
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 10:07 am
GoKitty: My friends are always getting on me about the classics that I’ve never seen. Like The Godfather, Rocky, Raging Bull, etc. While at the same time I’m trying to get them to se the “modern” classics of Se7en, Snatch, 28 Days Later, and Starship Troopers.
By chamblee54, July 25, 2008 @ 10:26 am
I am at work now and cannot listen to the videos. Is this “supermodel” different from the one RuPaul did?
Did you know that RuPaul is 6’7″? I met him once when he was a go go boi at a bar in Atlanta.
By Craig, July 25, 2008 @ 10:50 am
Dave S: Watch Clueless immediately!
Coty: You prefer Miley over me? Seriously? The next time we hang out! I will redeem myself!
chamblee54: No, it’s a different song, but RuPaul’s version is a lot of fun too! I can’t believe you got to meet her! That’s so cool!
By Coty, July 25, 2008 @ 10:58 am
Just kidding Craig, you’re my favorite of all time! Your singing is way better anyway! And if you weren’t before, you would be now due to your awesome plug of lyrics to my favorite song! Miley and Craig in the same day? It’s the Best of Both Worlds.
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 11:13 am
Craig: Will do! I have my Friday night completely free (see dating conversation from earlier this week), so I’ll see if Blockbuster has a copy and watch it per your instruction.
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 11:19 am
The fact that you two know enough Miley lyrics to play them back in a conversation is frightening. In fact, what we need to hear now is your sincere apology.
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 11:19 am
And if you text it to me, I’ll delete it.
By Coty, July 25, 2008 @ 11:24 am
It’s too late to apologize.
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 11:39 am
It’s too late…?
By Craig, July 25, 2008 @ 11:48 am
I loved when they played the song “Apologize” during commercials for Atonement. It definitely summed up my feelings towards that bratty girl and subsequently Vanessa Redgrave.
By Bon Don, July 25, 2008 @ 12:00 pm
“I didn’t eat yesterday,
I’m not going to eat today
and I’m not going to eat tomorrow
cause I’m gonna be a super model! ”
Love that song! I love Jill Sobule!! I used to replay her CD & Reel Big Fish “She Has a Girlfriend Now” over and over…BUT please don’t knock my girl Katy Perry, she’s just as awesome… how can you not like “Ur So Gay”??
By Dave S., July 25, 2008 @ 12:04 pm
Craig: And the play on words is very clever too, with ‘atonement’ and ‘apologize’ being two sides of the same coin.
By john, July 25, 2008 @ 12:39 pm
Clueless is worth it simply to hear the line: “I spend more time picking out my shoes and they just go on my feet.
By Michelle M., July 25, 2008 @ 3:52 pm
Every time I come across Clueless on tv I think, I’ll just watch until Cher gets held up… okay, I’ll turn the channel after Dionne drives onto the highway… I just wanna see the part where Cher burns the cookies… and then I’ve watched the whole damn thing. Such a cute little movie.
By chambleee54, July 25, 2008 @ 7:43 pm
I am home now. You are correct, that is not the RuPaul song. Being a real girl does have advantages.
By ChickyMama, July 25, 2008 @ 9:03 pm
I think I’m the only person on the plnet that hasn’t heard of Katy Perry – please dont’ shoot me!! Either way, I love Jill’s version way better. I am also headed to the movie cabinet to pull Clueless from the shelf. I need a little mindless humor before clinicals tomorrow morning.
By Himbo, July 27, 2008 @ 7:43 pm
I’ve been out of commission for a few days and just came across this post. While I hate to disagree with Craig, I must admit I think Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” is waaaay better than Jill Sobule’s. I *will* add that Jill’s “Supermodel” holds its own, especially for its association to one of the best movies of all time. In my opinion, Jill and Katy are of two different breeds, apples and oranges. Not to take anything away from Jill but Katy has my buy in because she’s like 21 years old, writes her own songs, they’re edgy and fresh, she is waaay cute and full of personality. She’s the bomb dot com! I listen to her album from start to finish without skipping a song — they’re all that good.
