Your Daily Dose of Ridiculousness

If anyone tries to tell you that Captain Kirk is better than Captain Picard, show them this video. Captain Picard owns all other Star Trek captains.

My favorite part: “Q…Q?”

vuboq doesn’t remember that episode …

How awesome and nostalgic! I agree, Patrick Stewart was the best of a great group of ST captains. I also think that Avery Brooks Captain Sisko doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

That clip is also cool because my Mom sings that song with our nephew/Godson Patrick. He’s only 3 and he knows all the words to that and so many songs! :)

Captain Picard was THE best captain. I don’t remember this episode at all, though…special feature?

  • By FDot, August 23, 2008 @ 12:43 pm

Hmmm…..I’d have to see Shatner’s video of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ before I could make a final decision.

  • By Craig, August 23, 2008 @ 12:52 pm

Michelle: I’d have to watch Deep Space 9 before I can give my opinion on Captain Sisko, but I know a few readers around here absolutely love DS9 and might even consider him the best captain.

VUBOQ and Ξ_Heather: It’s not part of an episode. I think they just did it as a gag for Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the series, because he starts off with “Gene…you’re adorable.” I just stumbled upon it during a random YouTube search, but apparently it’s an Easter Egg on the Season 5 DVDs.

FDot: This is seriously very scary:

Dear God…..I couldn’t even finish that clip as I felt the lifeforce draining from me. You are correct, Picard is the best.

  • By john, August 23, 2008 @ 2:27 pm

Patrick Stewart turns everything he does into acting gold. He is awesome and is absolutely the best captain. I did like Sisko (not at much), but Avery Brooks is a good actor.

Oh, you have to go back and watch Shatner’s Rocket Man. Stewie’s rip of it on Family Guy is great too.

Did you ever see Patrick Stewart on Extras? His performance as “himself” was hysterical!

Personal bragging rights: I met him once when I was working at a coffee shop in California. Had I been in an extremely dorky mood I would have asked him, “Tea, Earl Grey, hot?” but instead I just made him an espresso and told him how much I loved him.

  • By Tam (Meee), August 23, 2008 @ 2:55 pm

Oh yeah, he is the best, no question. He was always my fave.

I’m still at work, so I’ll have to wait to get home to watch the clip, but I can tell yo, Picard was THE best. Sisko…he started the show as a Commander, wasn’t even a Captain until a few seasons in. Kirk…chewed scenery like a buzzsaw and shagged everything that moved…without a Starfleet condom, at least not that I could see. And Janeway…well, if she have gotten rid of that horrid hairstyle from the first few seasons, I’m sure she would have rated higher.

but Picard…he IS the epitome of Starfleet captains! Any starship that I’m on, I want Picard to be the captain!!

    HUGS…

Patrick Stewart was already my hero, this just made him that much more awesome. Thank you for finding and sharing this!

  • By Polt, August 23, 2008 @ 5:00 pm

Having seen the video, all I can add is, ‘have you seen the movie Jeffrey? Patrick Stewart acts gayer, on purpose, than most gay guys I know, and yet, isn’t mocking or condescending. Outstanding performance.

    HUGS…

I just watched (listened to?) Bill’s YouTube performance. I know he’s one of our national treasures along with maple syrup, poutine and Nickelback, being Canadian and all, but I really don’t know what he was thinking when he took up performance art. But then he’s so incredibly bad it makes it appealing. The worse he is the better it seems. Some kind of weird reverse psychology shit going on there.

“But then he’s so incredibly bad it makes it appealing”
Kinda like his acting, eh? :)

I saw that a few years ago and I loved it then, and I love it now. He is so wonderful. He’s just about THE most fabulous actor out there.

Mat: You should have had this t-shirt for the experience. I saw it flicking around this morning and thought of you.

I have to agree that Picard is superior.

And has anyone here actually listened to William Shatner’s “Has Been” CD? It was produced by Ben Folds and features the likes of Aimee Mann, Henry Rollins, and (of course) Ben Folds (among others). It sounds like a really stupid idea, given his track record with recording so-called “music,” but it actually works. Some tongue-in-cheekiness (“Has Been”), some serious (“That’s Me Trying”), and some just damn fun (“Ideal Woman” and “I Can’t Get Behind That”). The cover of “Common People” is the only cover on the CD — everything else is original stuff. Call me crazy, but I think the CD is well done.

    But Patrick Stewart sings better.

  • By TwoPi, August 24, 2008 @ 3:19 pm

Picard wins. Hard for me to say that, having grown up watching Shatner and Nimoy. What convinced me was this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC73PHdQX04&feature=related

Patrick Stewart’s agent never put him into this sort of situation, clear evidence that he survived Star Trek in a way that the actors of the 1960s just couldn’t.

  • By Ryan R., August 24, 2008 @ 5:49 pm

    TwoPi: Was the choreographer high?

  • By TwoPi, August 24, 2008 @ 6:05 pm

    Who wasn’t?

  • By Ryan R., August 24, 2008 @ 9:16 pm

Acutally, I think that might be the pilot for Teletubbies.

  • By Michelle M., August 24, 2008 @ 9:28 pm

Oooh – I love Shatner’s singing. Why didn’t they give that man a variety show?
My favorite is his version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I have it on the cd, Golden Throats. His version of Tambourine Man is on it, too. Leonard Nimoy also appears, singing Proud Mary and If I had Hammer.

  • By Craig, August 24, 2008 @ 9:54 pm

I just got around to watching TwoPi’s link and oh my goodness that was so awful that it circled around and turned into awesome.

  • By Dave S., August 24, 2008 @ 10:02 pm

Damn. I gotta agree with Craig. Lenny totally circled.

  • By Michelle M., August 24, 2008 @ 10:06 pm

“so awful that it circled around and turned into awesome.”

I am totally going to steal this phrase.

  • By ScottieC, August 25, 2008 @ 9:52 am

Wow. That’s ridiculous… ridiculously AWESOME! Picard has always been better than Kirk, but (and I think I may be the only person out there who thinks so) my favourite captain is Janeway. Am I alone on this?

  • By Tam, August 25, 2008 @ 12:01 pm

    Yes, you are alone Scottie.

  • By David, August 25, 2008 @ 4:18 pm

I’ll have to wait until I get home to catch that with sound, but even silent, it’s awesomeness is apparent.

This is why formally trained British actors will always trump others, they can do it all and do it with conviction.

I saw Patrick Stewart perform his one-man Christmas Carol on Broadway many years ago – genius. I was at a late night cabaret show later that year and they were delaying starting and soon we found out why, because in comes Mr. Stewart, who had rushed over from finishing his performance so he could attend the cabaret.

IMDB has an interesting tidbit about how William Shatner got his big break in showbiz: http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0555846/

Got to love Christopher Plummer’s reaction to the thought of Shatner becoming famous…”Nurse! Medication!!!!!”
