The thing I like about Top Model

One of the things I really like about America’s Next Top Model (besides watching Tyra pretend to be a fairy godmother) is that I can actually follow along with what the judges are saying and critiquing and often actually agree with their decisions. With Project Runway, that is rarely the case. I’ll see a garment (that’s what they call dresses in the fashion industry!) coming down the runway, and if I’m thinking “Oh my god, that is hideous!” the judges will say “That is amazing! It’s so edgy!” (like when Jeffrey won season 3) and if I think something is amazing, they usually think it’s the worst thing in the world. I guess I just don’t get fashion. And with shows like Survivor, they edit out so much of the discussions before the voting takes place, that they lead you to believe that one person will be voted out, and then they end up voting out someone completely different. It’s as if you’re allowed to watch, but you’re not invited to play along, which isn’t as much fun as it could be. But with Top Model, you’re looking at a picture, and it’s either beautiful, or its not. And the judges almost always see things the same way you do. Oh and Tyra is a maniac, which is so much fun to watch. What was up with her Nazgûl outfit at panel last night? Typical Tyra craziness, that’s what.

  1. I stayed up til 3am just so I could be the first to post for once. Too bad it’s about Tyra and I have nothing to add cause I don’t watch that crazy ass show.
Come on Craig. For being so creative you really do watch some of the worst stuff.

  2. My daughter watches reruns of Top Model on VH1 and I gotta tell you, it’s damn addicting. I don’t watch the new episodes — can’t seem to fit it into my expansive schedule of Heroes, Project Runway, and Lost.

But I totally agree with you. With modeling, what you see is what you get and if what you see is bad, then it’s bad. There’s very little room for interpretation. It really does make the show more interesting.

I don’t know what it is about Project Runway that pulls me in, but part of it is disagreeing with the judges. The moments of “Holy crap, they actually think that tripe is *good*?!” are always fun and it’s great to argue about it with people the next day.

  3. Andy: Some of the worst stuff? Blasphemy! Give me a list of TV shows you watch, and I’ll be sure to watch them and give you my thoughts in their very own post just for you.

  4. Top Model?! I was hoping for a Pushing Daisies post!!

  5. Well, I know this will come as a surprise to you, but I don’t watch Top Model either.

I agree with Dave S. on being amazed at the comments of the judges. And Craiggers, you are entirely correct about Jeffrey. I’ll also throw Christian from last season into the category too, but then I never liked him. At all.

Shameless Plug time: Dave S. and I have a post each Wednesday night on that evening episode of Project Runway. Stop by and check it out. (Hey, we all knew either Dave S. or I was going to do the shameless plug, and I’m MUCH more of an attention whore than he is, so I just went ahead and did it).

Oh, and may I add that even though I don’t watch Top Model,Torchwood just keeps me riveted to the screen. :)

    HUGS…

  6. Tam

Ummm. I don’t watch any of those shows (except Torchwood :-) ) but I did read Dave and Polt’s post on Runway last week. Funny stuff even if I had no clue what they were talking about. (Do I get any kind of bonus for the glowing endorsement Polt?)

  7. Bernd

Adding a bit of irrellevant TV trivia: Heidi Klum is doing Top Model on German TV. I don’t watch ANTM because I’m not interested in skinny bitches trying to out-sashay each other. But Tyra probably would have Heidi for breakfast as a host.

  8. Do you think they could pull off a guy version of Americas Next Top Model? Or maybe that’s been done before. Not that I would necessarily watch it — my feelings of inadequacy would skyrocket… :-(

It would be interesting though. Except there wouldn’t be as much drama.

    Male model #1: “You’re a dick.”
    Male model #2: “Another PBR?”
    Male model #1: “Awesome!”

  9. Tam

Dave: I thought there was a male version. Or maybe I just dreamed it. I might actually watch if there was. Ah ha! I was right. I was in 2004 on Bravo and called “Manhunt: The Search for America’s Most Gorgeous Male Model” They should revive it.

  10. john

I’ve seen ANTM reruns and they are addictive. I can’t figure out if Tyra is a huge snatch or is genuinely caring, either way, she is all crazy (and pretty damn hot I have to say).

I do watch PR and agree that I often like the opposite things the judges like, but I am getting better at determining what they like. I’ve been following Polt and Dave S.’s posts and they are pretty damn funny!

Craig & Andy McEntee: do I smell a Puntabulous debate in the works?

  11. Manhunt? Seriously? It was called Manhunt?! Sounds like either a dating game or Dick Cheney-hosted show on the Outdoor Channel…

  12. GoKitty

Really? I find PR really easy to follow and usually agree with the judges. Like Leanne’s wedding dress last nite was gorgeous… GORGEOUS. I also think Jeffrey deserved to win… that season. My only complaint was Chloe winning in season 2. I thinks he did some nice stuff during the season but her line at the end was just “meh”. As much as I hate Daniel V’s attitude, I would have given it to him.

  13. Tam

Holy crap, that’s every hideous bridesmaid dress from the 80′s rolled into one. And the look on the model’s face says she knows it.

  14. GoKitty

I’m sure production has a lot of influence in the process… how else could you justify Wendy Pepper making it the finals in season 1? She made an interesting “villain” but if the world was a fair place, her spot would have gone to Austin Scarlet. Anyway, I think the producers have to throw women and , yes even, straight men a bone in this show. But not ONE gay man in this year’s finale?! are they crazy?!

  15. Tam: You get all the bonus points for referencing Torchwood with me. :)

Dave S.: Yeah, it was called Manhunt. And male models are just as vapid as female models. Honestly, I usually watched half the show with the tv muted. I don’t want to hear them, I just want to watch them. :)

    HUGS…

  16. GoKitty: I think there were about three episodes where Kenley should have gone. And I think Kelli was kicked out WAY too early. But honestly, were any of the guys really that good. I mean Jerell was okay, and despite how much I like looking at Keith, he wasn’t really all the great either.

I just think they had a undertalented batch of gay guys this time. Although Jerry and Wesley left pretty early, so who knows how they might have been?

    HUGS…

  17. GoKitty

I really liked Wesley and with his dressed up shorts. I think he could have been good if he could have got past the novelty challenges where they make you design clothing using only a tube of chapstick and a dance belt.

  18. Bernd

Jerry and Wesley, we hardly knew them. They kicked a number of talented people way to early to the curb this year, maybe those 2, Kelli, Terry would have done way better than Pleather, Kenley, Joe. But overall the runway-shows were rather bad this season. If this was due to lesser talents and skills, the insane production schedule, uninspiring challenges or a combination of all this I don’t know. But at least the boys at Project Rungay were at the top of their game this season. Yesterday’s reunion-show is laugh-out-loud funny.

  19. john

Bernd: Thanks for the link that reunion recap was awesome!!

  20. I was SO into Project Runway for the first two seasons, but I have to agree. None of the panel had any opinions I agreed with, and the goobers who got to the end were always shallow or boring.

As for Top Model…….how HARD is it REALLY to stand or pose in front of the camera. I mean, everyone looks the same at some point, and all they do is turn their head or something. All the real work that goes into a photo shoot (hair, makeup, set, clothes) is done by everyone ELSE!

  21. Tam

Chris: I thought the real work was done by the photoshop guys after.

  22. Chris: Yeah, but you gotta do all the effort of that trademark look, ala Zoolander. ;-)

  23. john

Chris and Tam for the win!

Though you grossly underestimate how difficult it is to smile with you eyes. (insert eye roll here).

  24. And don’t forget about the hazards of tripping on the runway…

  25. Or something falling out where it’s not supposed to…

  26. Or something falling out that wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place. >>

  27. ExAstrisScientia

Tell us Craig, does your love of Top Model make your vag tingle! :-P

  28. Chris: Please tell me that was an Isis reference. Otherwise I just have a very dirty mind. Plus if it is, considering these comments, I may have been the only one watching enough of this show to get it! :-P

    ExAstrisScientia: vag tingles, brain numbs.

  29. Craig: That makes two of us. I kind of just wrote that to read the reactions. XD

  30. Who’s toenails do I have to clip around here to get my “very own post just for you”?

And Please check out Torchwood! Why do you delight so in torturing Polt?

  31. Mark: It doesn’t take much. I accept paypal.

    What’s Torchwood?

  32. Craig + Mark:

I’ve only seen three eps of Torchwood and while it’s definitely really light-hearted when referring to the gay stuff, I never got into the Jack guy, even if he does turn out to be gay. As for the sci-fi aspect, I’m more of a soap opera guy myself.

Craig, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out right this instant!

  33. soap opera = space opera

    *shifty glances*

  34. I tried pay for post once, but the post didn’t go anywhere I wanted it to :-(

  35. Chris: Suuuuure you meant “space” opera. Mmmhmmm.

Mark: That wasn’t a post. That was a prostitute.

  36. to-mA-toe, to-Mah-toe

  37. john

    Lordy. Craig: CYE

  38. Ooops, that sounded bad, I wasn’t comparing you to a prostitute!

  39. John: Done. Thanks! What’s Torchwood?

Mark: Don’t worry, I didn’t think that at all!

  40. john

Craig: Right back atcha. Also: Torchwood is a British science fiction drama television programme, created by Russell T Davies and starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles. It deals with the machinations and activities of the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, who deal mainly with incidents involving extraterrestrials. From here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torchwood

I *think* Polt, Tam and I like it a little.

  41. Ugh. My day started out so well, but now it’s sucking. :-(

    (Sympathy? … Anyone? … Bueller…?)

  42. Love the Tyra photo that’s used for the header. She’s definitely a beautiful creature.

  43. And for those of you playing Polt’s Puntabulous drinking game:

    “Torchwood.”

  44. Dave: *sympathy, sympathy*

Yeah, like most beautiful creatures, it’s when they open their mouths and go on to create talk shows that the illusion is shattered.

Number of Puntabulous comments minus Dave S: 72,317
    :)

  46. I think a better drinking game would be to take a drink everytime Dave S comments :-P
