Have you heard of Torchwood?

So apparently there’s this show called Torchwood. Have you heard of it? Yeah, no one told me about it either. I had to discover it all on my own. And by “all on my own” I mean “anytime I mentioned anything — regardless of its relationship to television and/or science fiction — my dancing monkeys in the comment section managed to steer the conversation towards Torchwood and yelled at me for not watching it until they just couldn’t stand it anymore and the original dancing monkey himself John (who will henceforth be referred to as the bearer of all good things) sent me a copy of the first season”:

Wasn’t that awesome of him?! And nice handwriting, right? Anyway, it’s now one of my very favorite shows and I devoured the first three episodes in a single sitting. It’s fantastic! It’s geeky like Star Trek, but… like… how can I put this delicately? THEY HAVE SEX! And make out! A lot! Guys and girls! Guys and guys! Girls and girls! Seriously! It’s like they combined two of my favorite things! Science fiction and living vicariously through other people’s sex lives!

And when they’re not making out or saying cleverly sexual things like that time they were investigating the death of a guy who died right after sex with an alien that fed on male orgasms (seriously!) and Captain Jack said “Looks like he came and went.” there are some really great stories, with an emotional impact and connection to the characters that I was feeling after just three episodes!

Thanks again to John, the bearer of all good things, for sending it to me! Oh fine, and thanks to Polt, Tam, Dave S, digkv, Bernd, Ryan R, Chris, another Chris, Mark, Lance, Dee Loralei, ExAstrisScientia, Jum, Lunzie, Crunchy Carpets, Sven, and Scott for recommending it!

Tam: I had never heard rotisserie used in that manner before either, but knew exactly what it meant. If you are wondering who’s mind that is in the gutter with you, it’s mine.

  2. digkv: We are the same age (I think)! I too am a sophomore in college! Ah. This relieves me.

  3. Tam

Whew, glad I’m not alone there wallowing in the filth John. :-)

  4. Tam, I too knew exactly what rotisserie meant….but then I am a horny old decadent debaucher….with you, I was rather surprised to find out you knew it….hmmm, there may be more depth to you, perversion-wise, than I thought. :)

    HUGS…

Polt: Gee thanks, I’m flattered. LOL Well, the word just brings immediately to mind a visual that is hard to put together any other way.

Hmmm. My posts near the bottom have a speech bubble instead of my picture. Does this mean I’m over my posting limit? Hmmm. Seems to be posted on this computer. Maybe everyone else can see but me. Oh well, time to say good-night.

  7. Tam

Did this work? My e-mail address was screwy.

  8. digkv

EnriStatusQuo: Yay awesome, we’re both 19. It’s cool to be the young ones.

Tam: Yep, your pic works but how do you make an avatar anyways? I’ve been wondering how we add it I’m tired of my quotes speech bubble default.

You are good at the name thing. And its obvious I didn’t go to bed when I said I was. Sigh. Caffeine will be my friend tomorrow morning. You go to http://www.gravatar.com and register and upload a pic then its associated with the e-mail you use here. It easy to do. Now I am truly going to sleep. Swear.

Crap, it keeps switching back. Grrr. Computer is too smart for its own good.

Thanks Tam! Hopefully this worked and I do hope you get a good night’s sleep!

  12. So the moral of the story is that if you REALLY want Craig to watch your movie/TV recommendation you must SEND it to him, apparently. ;)

Owen is not my type. I first saw the actor, Burn Gorman, playing Mr. Guppy in Bleak House on Master Piece Theater. His character was a bit creepy looking in that, which probably shaped my first impression.

Ianto is rather dashing. He totally inspired me to wear a formal suite more often! Formalware can be hot! There is an episode that explores Ianto’s introduction to Torchwood. It might be in the second season. I found it rather interesting.

My first impression of John Barrowman was that he reminded me of Tom Cruise. However I quickly got past that. He pulls of the role of the tormented hero rather well.

I felt that some of the story lines got a little “out there” as the series progressed. I hope the third season is a bit more grounded.

It is a great show, and I am glad to see that there is a more complex representation of gay people in the media beyond the common shallow stereotypes.

  13. I totally fell in love with Captain Jack in that episode of Doctor Who called The Empty Child. He is just so dashing. BTW you have watched Doctor Who. I just started watching it and the show is Brilliant.

Dickie Maxx: The Empty Child is one of my favorite episodes from Season 1 of Doctor Who. It was fun and scary all at once.

I have one question: “Are you my mummy?”

  15. @john I have been the daddy never the mummy. But hey I am up for new things. Totally the best episodes of series 1. I have to admit though I like Tennant as the doctor better. So sad to read that he is leaving the show for a new doctor. Maybe the new doctor will be better than Tennant.

  16. A day late….but I love Torchwood, I am glad you were finally able to check it out!

  17. I’ve never really got into Torchwood or Dr Who (blasphemy I know!)

I am watching (and loving) Spooks though, but not sure if you get that over there.

  18. Milo: Blasphemy! :-P

I’ve never heard of Spooks until I saw your reviews. I don’t think we get it over here.

  19. Craig – in that case, you need to move over here! :)

  20. Milo: Deal. But I’ll need a job and a place to stay. I’m thinking you should fire your PA and hire me instead :-)

  21. Craig – I’m sure that can be arranged! Anyway, she should be fired, 16 meetings in 3 days and that’s the gospel truth. I am completely brain dead.

This is off-topic ,but this just started on BBC4 (I’m recording it for later) and I thought of you. I loved the old stuff we read as kids.

  22. Milo: 16 meetings in 3 days sounds shoot-me-in-the-face-fantastic.

That documentary sounds great! Let me know how it is!

  23. Over sexed sci fi…Is that not the perfect show for you????

  24. Glad to hear you liked it Craig!

I loved the electricity between Captain Jack and Captain John in later episodes. :)
