Big Bang Theory – Season One – Review

So every Monday night, while I’m watching Gossip Girl, I hear my Mom hysterically laughing in the other room. Occasionally she’ll yell into my room: “Craig! You have to watch this! These guys are just like you! They’re huge dorks!” Turns out she’s watching Big Bang Theory and she loves it so much she got me the first season on DVD for Christmas, which I just finished last night, and now I love it too. My Mom has a special fondness for this scene. It may or may not have to do with the other Christmas present she gave me a few years ago that’s involved:

The best way to sum it up is FUBU. For Us, By Us. And by “Us” I mean “Dorks”. The show is about a group of dorks, and their hot girl neighbor from across the hall. But surprisingly it doesn’t rely on easy dork jokes. There’s no “LOL! Dorks watch Star Trek!” In fact, it doesn’t even really make fun of dorks. It’s a lot of laughing with rather than at. When the characters say dorky things, and argue about science, or super powers, or science fiction, it makes sense. It’s not random dorky gobbledygook that the writers are throwing at the page. Its obviously written by dorks and they understand what makes dorks tick. They even reference Babylon 5! What non-dork even knows about Babylon 5?

There’s lots of talk about the typical living room sitcom being dead, and with the awesomeness of Arrested Development, The Office, and 30 Rock, I was beginning to agree with them. But this show gives me hope for the old school sitcom format. There wasn’t an episode that didn’t make me laugh out loud. I especially love the supporting characters Howard and Rajesh. It’s like every line out of their mouths cracks me up. Definitely give this show a try if you need something to watch on Monday nights, or catch up with it on DVD!

What’s with all these entries about things I’ve never seen?! That’s like 5 in a row.

  2. Craig on January 21, 2009 at 12:29 pm

I’m just trying to get them out of the way. Soon it will be ALL ENRICO ALL THE TIME around here.

I love love love this show! And I don’t think enough people watch it. It’s utterly hilarious. And all the geek references are awesome. Unfortunately, I can’t see the video since it’s blocked here at work, but I know one of *my* favorite scenes was when they ended up with the Time Machine movie prop and when one of them went to “use” it, all the others quickly busied themselves on fast speed. Holy crap, I was *rolling* it was so funny.

I find Sheldon strangely attractive. This would probably be different if I had ever experienced “Knock, knock . . . Ryan . . . Knock, knock . . . Ryan”

  5. Craig on January 21, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Dave S: Yes! I loved that bit too! Hysterical! It took me a second to realize what they were doing, but once I did, I was dying!

Ryan: Yeah, he’s definitely cute, and Leonard isn’t so bad either. The knocking is great, as his need to sit in the same spot all the time.

Hi Craig! Delurking… sorry it took me so long.

Big Bang Theory? Is THE best show on TV right now. I love, love, love it. It’s like spending the day at my house with all my very best friends. Because I am the hot girl across the hall…. heh.

I really like the Halloween episode when Penny had the party at her apartment and the “that’s how we roll in the Shire” comment. Died. I love that episode… come to think of it….

*goes to find the episode to watch*

I’m a dork? I know what Babylon 5 is. Guess I’m good company.

Since everyone here seems to be raving maybe I’ll check it out. I’ve seen a couple of commercials for it but that’s as far as it got.

  8. Craig on January 21, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Hooray for delurking! Now I can add you to my blogroll. :-)

The Halloween episode was great. I loved when they all showed up as The Flash. And then Rajesh as Thor. “By Odin’s beard!”

I haven’t seen this yet either, but by your test, I’m a total Dork. Tam, if I may say so myself, you are in fine company.

Ugh. I hate that show. Sheldon seems to own my entire wardrobe which makes my partner laugh hysterically and point. Can’t I just wear my super hero t shirt in peace??

Monday Night is “must see TV” in our house. We started Big Bang when it first came on… and have yet to be disappointed!! Fantastically funny show! Best episode was the Xmas one from this season with Penny’s present to Sheldon and Sheldon attempting to be a gift giver as well.

Darn! More NetFlix fodder! I am seriously behind on my geeky TV shows, you won’t tell will you? I would hate to have my geek card revoked.

Joseph: I feel your pain. My wife just rolls her eyes when I wear my Green Lantern or Thundercats t-shirts.

OK, I know you’re all to young to get the reference.

M I C K E Y M O U S E. It’s on one of my Disney CDs. 10-15 years back there was a stupid John Cougar-Mellenkamp song “R O C K in the USA” and all I could think of was Mickey Mouse. Seems I can still hold of on the Ginko Biloba

  15. Mark on January 21, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Ah Bernd: in another place, in another time; who knows what could have been.

  16. Craig on January 21, 2009 at 4:19 pm

    Um, let’s not forget:

    P-U-N…T-A-B…U-L-O-U-S!

  17. Nicole on January 21, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I’ll have to watch this! I love dorks :)

  18. Mark on January 21, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Craig: Ummm, that’s what I was talking about. Mickey Mouse? Who’s that?

    Yeah, that’s the ticket.

I had to leave one last obscure reference. ;-)

  19. Bernd on January 21, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Mark: Oh, to be wanted for my brilliant wit, my memory of entertainment-trivia and not ju8st for my body. “SIGH” A dream come true. Esp. the entertainment trivia is wasted on my BF.

My sister was named Lilithfairflower and she’s not a lesbian. Just ask Mary, her Best Friend and roomate for the past ten years.

My husband is pretty much every one of those guys all balled into one. I’m just as hot as the “10 rules” chic, but much smarter. Like..5% more.

  27. Mark on January 21, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Tam: Thanks, It’s been a Great day for me maybe thats why.

My racist uncle sent me an email about how Obama wasn’t really President because of the flubbed oath. I finally hitched up my pants and emailed him back that he is just a racist that can’t accept the fact that a Black man is President. I let him have it with both barrells, no hold barred.
Sometimes severing relationships can set you free.

It was kinda like coming out. :-)

  28. Tam on January 21, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Mark: Good for you. Standing up for what you believe does feel damn good.

  29. Burner on January 21, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Just wait till you see season 2…it’s hysterical.

Especially the Panty Pinata episode and the Christmas one.
