Oh Lost! Where oh where do I start? I suppose I should preface this by saying that no matter how much I complain about this show, I still love it and will never stop watching it. I just enjoy complaining like any good fanboy should. Anywho, I miss season one where it was just a show about good looking people surviving on an island. Times we so much simpler back then. And episodes actually meant something. They had individual stories where you could be like “Remember the first Locke episode?” or “Remember when Aaron was born?” And while part of me is glad they got rid of the single character flashback format of the episodes (because they were really struggling for backstories the past two seasons) it just seems that without them, the individual episodes lack focus. Every episode is just a tiny piece of the larger puzzle, so when you’re done watching it, you don’t have any level of satisfaction.
It also bugs me that Kate is nothing like the cool tomboy we knew from season one. It seems like ever since they stuck her in a cage and a dress, they stripped away everything that made her Kate. Now these days she hangs around the house in dresses and high heels for no reason whatsoever, yet doesn’t appear to have a job. I am thoroughly enjoying Juliet though. She always came across as weak every time (still two words) she was with Jack, and it didn’t mesh well with her more mysterious “Other” side, but now that she’s hanging out with Sawyer, her true personality is coming through and it’s really great.
I’m also finding the on-island storyline much more interesting than the off-island storyline. How many times do we have to hear about how they HAVE TO GO BACK!? Seriously, we get it. And who is the Mrs. Hawking, and why do I get the impression that us fanboys are supposed to cream our pants when she’s on screen? She’s just some old lady, but every time (ugh) she’s on screen they play this dramatic music and show her in closeup while saying these mysterious lines. Oh gee, think she’s gonna be important? Maybe she has four toes, and one day the island will jump far back enough in time to see a gigantic statue of her. Also, what’s with the smoke monster these days? Now they’re just throwing every sound they have at it just to confuse and annoy me: “Cue the dinosaur roar! Now the chains! Now the electricity!” But whatever. Lost is the show I hate to love and love to hate. You guys watching?

It’s ironic that you brought this up today — I was just thinking at the end of the last night’s episode how I’ve really enjoyed the evolution of this series. True, the beginning two seasons of the show had more heart as you got to know the characters and more and more was revealed about them via back stories, but now it’s about revealing the characters via the here-and-now and how the past three years have negatively changed the Oceanic 6 as much as the island changed them in a positive way.
That’s where I think the transformations of Kate’s character really stand out. She’s not like she was on the island. She’s different. And that’s the point. But like you said, it’s not a positive change. She’s become unlikable. She’s angry. Bitter. Being away from the island’s done that to her. She’s even reverting back to trying to pretend she’s somebody she’s not — a feat that began eroding away before they even hit the mainland.
Okay, true, the storytelling is a hell of a lot faster, which is going to eat into the time it takes to pose those really cool moments that the characters used to often share, but I’m okay with that for now. Especially since they only have one more season to figure this all out.
Personally, I can’t wait.
Never seen it. Its not exactly a show that you can start watching half-way through Season 3. I’ve just heard all the complaints/buzz. Kate is Canadian, that’s about the only connection I have.
Tam: ::gasp:: No Lost? Gosh…I’m…I’m so sorry… If there’s anything I can do…just let me know. Really. And know that you and your family are in my prayers…
I love Lost. This season is for me though is getting hard to follow. All of the time changes and switching back and forth from the story lines on the island and off. Interesting fun fact, when I googled the company that was on the side of the van that Benjamin drove Sun and Jack to see the Mrs. Hawking, I saw that when you rearrange the letters, it spells reincarnation. Just something interesting.
Yeah, never seen an episode. Therefore I have nothing to contribute, although (insert witty Torchwood/Skins reference here, followed by smiles at the wittiness).
HUGS…
Love it…one of my favorite shows on TV…I think this so far this season and last season really kicked things in high gear for the story and action…they gave us two great seasons of character building, one season of poo, then season four and now season five…rockin!
Hey everyone! I’m still alive!
I stopped watching halfway through season 2. I was too disappointed to continue.
Jeff: Annagrams are a recurring thing in Lost. You’ll see them everywhere. And they’re constantly putting in Easter eggs, which makes it fun for us longtime watchers.
Kinda like the Psych pineapples, Lost always features at least one of The Numbers in each episode.
On the one hand, I’m not obsessed like I used to be (watching the smoke monster attack Echo in slow motion because you could see his brother in the smoke), but so far I like this season more than the last two. For a while I was watching it just because it was on and it was a fun thing to do with friends, but now I’m actually upset that I have to wait a week, just like in the good ol’ days.
I watch ( I know, shocking) but only in bursts, like over the New Year I watched the entire third season since I didn’t have time to watch when it was actually airing. And guess what? I still don’t have time to watch it when it is actually airing, so I will probably catch all of season 4 sometime in the spring. I love the show and they can do no wrong by me.
Ack — can’t…read….comments. I loved LOST the first Season, and only gave myself the treat of watching it while I was working out, as incentive. As a result, I’m only halfway though Season Two. Gotta get back into that. Or punt and just watch it, one of those.
It’s funny, considering how much I love BSG and am (barely) tolerating Heroes, I have no knowledge of lost. I remember watching half of the very first episode and then never managed to watch it again. I suppose I could have a dvd marathon to catch up.
Do they do a “catch the frak up” type thing for Lost?
PS: I’m back blogging again, for what it’s worth.
Once again I’ve never seen this one. But I will set my Television Recording Machine to record it and give it a try.
Holy Crap, it went through
LOST is my only must-see show of the week. I feel opposite of you in that I love the character flashbacks. That’s when they really draw me in emotionally. Without them, the rest of of it would not mean as much. And Juliet drives me nuts!!!!! She always has a superior smirk on her face that just makes me want to slap her. I have a serious girl-crush on Kate that I’ll always have, no matter what her personality is like. I think she is the most beautiful woman on the planet. I was happy to see the smoke monster last night. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until it was back! And I loved the way Jin said (when they asked him what that noise was) “Monsta!”
I love Sun and Jin and am so happy Jin is back, but I definitely don’t like the new mean Sun. I can understand why she’s pissed, I just don’t like it. Last night’s episode was really gory, wasn’t it???
It *was* gory! Loved it!
Gearing me up for the newest Friday the 13th!
I’m not reading this post because I haven’t seen Lost yet but I just wanted to see if anyone else saw BSG’s Starbuck on Nip/Tuck this week? With long hair, no less!
You do remember that Mrs. Hawking made a significant appearance in Season 3, right? That’s where she established her mystique and the serious fanboys have been waiting for two seasons to figure out who she is and what her piece of the puzzle is. If dramatic music at her appearance signifies anything, it’s that we’re closer to having this particular mystery solved.
The best thing to happen to Lost was the setting of an end date. It was quite obvious in Season 3 that they were spinning the wheels a little too much. Now that there are only 29 episodes left, pieces of the puzzle have to start coming together. We just have to trust that the showrunners have come up with an overall picture that will please the fans.
I don’t think Kate needs to work, the settlement from Oceanic Airlines probably ensured financial security for the rest of her life. And really, who doesn’t walk around their house wearing high heels?
I thought last night’s episode was a good one, they got rid of an unnecessary character, provided some decent exposition on the smoke monster and ended it with the expectation that some answers were about to come. I’ll keep watching until the end.
Craig: Have you given up totally on Fringe? The showrunners revealed a bit of their hand on the last episode, and if it plays out that way, Fringe could turn out to be a very interesting show indeed.
GoKitty: EWW! I watch Nip/Tuck but haven’t seen the most recent couple of episodes. Why is she on? I’m sure Katee Sackhoff will be great, but I’ll always see Starbuck when I look at her…
They lost me after the first episode. Instead I continued watching Desperate Housewives, which started the same season, if memory serves.
There’s an end date????? Noooooooo!!!!!!!
Yep – still watching. I agree with Fdot on the end date. I wouldn’t want Lost to go the same route as Twin Peaks, where it seemed like they were making stuff up as they went along.
I’m pretty much over Heroes. I’m still watching, but don’t really care about any of the characters any more.
