Glee – Review

gleeheader
Oh my goodness! Glee just ended and it was pretty much the most amazing thing ever! It was like an hour of pure unabashed joy! Seriously, I loved it. All the characters were pitch perfect, especially Lea Michele as the plucky Rachel and the adorkable Chris Colfer as Kurt. And the songs! Full length songs of awesomeness! Okay, I realize this is probably the worst review I’ve ever written. This show deserves much more than my OMGOMGOMG! but that’s about all I can get out right now. I haven’t been this happy watching television since Mary Murphy’s samba on So You Think You Can Dance. Do whatever you can to see this immediately and then download the cast’s version of Don’t Stop Believin’ on iTunes!

  1. I cannot wait. Even better, Miss Kristen Chenowith herself is supposed to appear in the show!

  2. Javi

This show is AWESOME! “I am Beyonce! I ain’t no Kelly Rowland.” More please. Sucks that we have to wait ’til the fall. Also I love Jane Lynch!

  3. john

Javi: I LOVED the Beyonce line! I loved Jessalyn Gilsig, she was so funny.

Craig: I totally downloaded Don’t Stop Belivin’ and I hate Journey. I also LOVE their version of Rehab! I only miss the whip sounds at the beginning that was in the trailer. Fantastic show, I only hope they can continue it.

It hasn’t aired out here yet, but I’ll be watching. By the way, “Don’t Stop Believing” has been going through my head since you posted the preview.

  5. I concur with your analysis, sir.

  6. I loved it and am so glad I can purchase “Don’t Stop Believing”. I’ve been playing the ten second clip from the commercial over and over in my head ever since I first heard it!

  7. Tam

I agree. Kristen and I both watched and enjoyed it muchly. I hate to have to wait until fall. My friend Kris in Australia is royally pissed at you though. You got her hooked and she’s been watching the preview clip continuously but she can’t access the Fox website to watch it because they might sell it to stations out of the US so block foreigners (damn insular Americans :-) ). I’m going to see if I can hook her up somehow. Maybe sidereel.

  8. It looks very promising!
This special pilot/preview was a little weird since they had to cram a LOT into one hour, but hopefully the actual series is more fleshed out.
And yeah, I don’t like “Don’t Stop Believing” but their version is so good!!

  9. Christian Jay

I loved. I loved it so much that halfway through the episode I was expecting it to be canceled before the episode was even over, because it’s just my luck with tv shows.

    Gleeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

  10. Oh, and did I ever mention that I saw Spring Awakening with the original cast? AKA, with Rachel! Hurray.

  11. Um, who doesn’t like the original Journey song? Blasphemy!

LOL! @ Christian Jay. It’s totally getting canceled just because we love it so much. Just like Pushing Daisies :-(

  12. john

Uh oh, now we are in trouble, I’m the kiss of death for tv shows too…

  13. Love, love, love! Now how am I supposed to wait until the fall?

  14. Matt

I totally agree. I don’t ever think I’ve been as geeked-out over a show, but I’m a recovering show choir fag. I’m just amazed at how the writers captured that ethos. I think I was AT that championship in ’93, and I’ve never felt so alive either. I’m a sad, sad excuse for a 33-year-old, but that was one fun thrill-ride of a show for me.

  15. Chris

I actually thought it was pretty terrible. There’s no chance that it gets picked up as a regular show. But Chris Colfer is gorgeous and I want to marry him over and over and over again for sure.

Sadly, their “Zac Efron” rip-off guy is no Zac Efrom… even remotely. And the snotty chick is just a sad caricature.

  16. Michelle M.

It was good! Yay! Parts of it reminded me of Election. Love Mercedes. Had to look up the wife and Emma because they looked familiar (they were both on Heroes).
And I can’t fold a fitted sheet either.

  17. Fitted sheets = Impossible

  18. Samuel

Craig, I didn’t understand all of the funny things because my friend was laughing and I wasn’t but I really really liked the show, it is my newest favorite american tv show!

  19. I wasn’t home to watch this, but I’d just like to say that none of you would know Lea Michelle existed if it was not for theater and Broadway, where she got her start and got noticed.

  20. I loved it. So much fun.

  21. God, Glee was soooo good.

It was like super gay night at my place last night, fruity drinks, Idol, Glee, and Dancing with the Stars …. afterward I had to call a friend and talk about the Blackhawks losing because I was afraid I’d lose myself in the land of happiness, puppies and rainbows.

  22. Nicolle

I missed it, dammit. But it looks great–I’ll definitely tune-in to future episodes. On an unrelated note (but sort-of relevant as it involves tv show recommendations), has anybody watched “Free Radio” on VH1? It’s about a clueless radio intern (Lance Krall who was hysterical a few years back as Kip on the Joe Schmoe Show) who gets to host his own radio show. There are real guest stars as radio guests, including in the first season Zachary Quinto. The show itself if almost entirely improvised. It’s my favorite new show in a while. I’m hoping it will get picked up for a third season. You can see full episodes at http://www.vh1.com/shows/free_radio/season_2/series.jhtml

  23. Tam

Kris let me know she was able to watch it on-line. There is a happy Aussie out there now because of you Craig. Your mission on earth is complete. You can die happy now. Well, don’t die NOW, but when your time comes, in 60 years or so.

  24. Alex

I totally loved it and was left craving for more! I wish it would have stayed a summer show since there isn’t much on now, but I guess I’ll just have to wait to get my fix in fall.

  25. GoKitty

I thought it was super cute and loved Kurt. It did feel more like a tv movie than an actual tv episode. I know its the pilot and all but it felt like half a season crammed into an hour. I do think it will get picked up for the fall but will be canceled after one season.

  26. Wow, I totally forgot that I saw Lea Michelle in my very first actually-on-Broadway Broadway show, Spring Awakening. I tend to have a bad habit of forgetting all about actresses unless there are no attractive men in the show.

  27. ScottieC

Urgh, I hate to disagree Craiggers, but Glee was pretty awful last night.

I love showtunes, and glee club, and all things fabulous and gay, but this was bad. There were some funny one-liners, amazing songs (and dances) and a fun theme. On the other hand, it was chock full of cliches, stereotypes, bad writing, and the whole thing felt terribly rushed. I’m hoping everything was haphazard because it was the pilot and that the show itself slows down to make me care about these characters, because I don’t right now. In fact, I hate almost all of the kids (the characters, not their voices). As it is, the show simply looks like a vehicle to sell songs on iTunes.

    I hope I’m wrong.

  28. ScottieC: Sorry to hear you didn’t like it. I think it was a bit rushed, but I think there’s nothing that can’t be fixed in the continuing series.

  29. john

Michelle M.: I just realized that Emma was Google Girl on Heroes! So…much…slowness in my head. Oh and fitted sheets, just roll them up. Martha will be so disappointed in you.

  30. I think shows like this usually take some time to find their feet. The timing issue is something that I’m sure will be fixed in upcoming episodes.

  31. ScottieC

Craiggers and Bradford: If it was only the timing, I wouldn’t have been so harsh. I think it has more than just pacing issues. What they need is new writers. Right now the script looks like a rehash of any “losers win in the end” type movie. Off the top of my head, I’m reminded of Center Stage, Save the Last Dance, Stomp the Yard, School of Rock… and there are several more.

Also, did anybody else notice how spoilery the “this season on Glee” trailer was? Sheeeeeesh! Don’t take me as a Debbie Downer. I know the show has potential, but it has yet to find a groove and Fox is very unforgiving. If it doesn’t get it together and find a cult following soon, the show is doomed.

  32. ::cue wacky trombone::

    Sorry, couldn’t resist :-)

  33. Lea Michelle was also the little girl in the original Broadway company of “Ragtime.”

And Matthew Morrison was on Broadway in “South Pacific” “A Light in the Piazza” “Hairspray” (where he got his big break – he was an understudy and the lead dropped out and he opened the show) and Off-Broadway in “10 Million Miles.”

  34. I wasn’t thrilled. I wanted to like it, but it wasn’t dark enough for my tastes — I’d expected something a bit more camp, or disturbed, or … edgy. It was just too similar to a straight disney-channel version of HS, with slightly better writing.

I do like that the peripheral characters had some depth — the psychotic “I’m on my feet 4 hours a day, 3 days a week…and you expect me to make my own dinner?” wife was a nice touch.

The preview had all the good lines, so I definitely agree with ScottyC on that one.

Who is their target audience? Are they aiming at the HSM tween crowd? Certainly some of the subplots are inappropriate (or would make me uncomfortable around my own HSM-fan-kids) — the drug subplot, the “is he going to cheat on his wife with a coworker” (implied) subplot. Or are they aiming for the parents of HSM fans?

The music seems aimed at that older generation (Journey, REO). Maybe that’s why I didn’t get into the show — it reminded me of my own HS hell, without changing it enough to make it entertaining to relive.

I’ll give Glee a chance in the fall, but I’m dubious that it will catch on. I just don’t see who they’re aiming for, what their vision is.

  35. Their target audience = People exactly like Craig

I’m just suck a sucker for this cheese.

  36. Liz

    LOVED IT TOO!!!

I think my fave bit was when Rachel was talking about where she came from… and the mixed up sperm and 2 dads and they just don’t know which of the dads’ sperm is the one that “took.” And the dads… one is black, the other white. I was cracking up!

    I am hooked. Completely.

And I guess I’ll just have to muddle through the long summer by re-watching the pilot (we saved it on our DVR and you can watch it on Hulu)… and I am soooo pulling out my copy of “Camp!”

  37. I loved it! It was so very good. And the kid who sang “Mr. Cellophane”, OMG!!

  38. The choice of the Journey tune was definitely great. Harkens back to the days of the sappy, saccharine and just plain awfulness. (I hang my head in shame, somewhere around here there is at least one Journey CD, probably Escape.)

  39. Nathan

I watched it and enjoyed but I have two complaints/concerns. The first is that the preview I watched had all of the best parts in it, so the episode wasn’t as entertaining as it might have been. The other thing is that I’m concerned about how exactly they plan to flesh this out into an entire series. But I suppose we shall see. The pilot was good.
