Wonder Woman – Review

Netflix #66 – Wonder Woman – Suggested by Michelle M. (Okay, maybe she didn’t suggest it per se, but since she loves Wonder Woman so much I’ll give her credit.)

Whatever Jason Segel! I’ll watch a Wonder Woman cartoon if I want to! So DC Comics has been doing these direct to DVD movies, and their latest iteration was Wonder Woman. The last one I saw before this was Justice League – The New Frontier, which you may remember was a bit of a letdown. Now I may get a little flack for saying this, but I have to say Wonder Woman was way better than The New Frontier. The story was bigger, and yet somehow more concise than The New Frontier, and with less characters to focus on it was able to tell a more engaging story. One thing that really stood out for me was the great dialogue, which had an adult flair to it and helped earn the movie a PG-13 rating, such as the following exchange:

Ares: You seem as eager to meet me on the battlefield as you once did in the bedroom, Hippolyta.
Hippolyta: I only hope you prove more skilled in this arena, Ares.

Oh snap! There was also a great recurring bit about the word “crap”, which was also super fun. The action was also really well done, and the incorporation of the Greek Gods into a comic book story was pretty flawless and a nice change of pace from comic book movies trying to be all “real” and “gritty” lately. The voice work by Keri Russell, Alfred Molina, and Rosario Dawson was all adequate, but the real stand out was Nathan Fillion as Steve Trevor. Is there nothing that man can’t do? So if you’re a fan of Wonder Woman and cartoons, be sure to give this one a shot!

Enrico: Physically perfect, perhaps, but not for Wonder Woman.

Why haven’t any of us thought of Michelle M.? She’d totally work that role.

    Who is Rhonetta?

  2. john

    Never mind. Google fixed that.

Is there any Unicorn Chaser handy?

  3. Yeah, john, Perez reboot was best of the reboots at the time (Byrne Superman….meh). Perez brought all the mythology into it that was sorely missing. Did you read Phil Jiminez’s run on WW? Outstanding Perez-like artwork, and great storylines!

    HUGS…

  4. Kate Winslet: TOTALLY wrong for Wonder Woman. She could totally play Etta Candy, though. *snickering whilst dodging Enrickyricardo mean looks thrown my way*

    HUGS…

  5. john

Polt: HA! Oh you are so gonna get smacked.

I stopped reading WW while Perez was on it, so I missed the Jiminez run.

  6. Nathan

Rhonetta? ridiculous, everyone knows that we need someone stunning and beautiful, like me, to be Wonder Woman.

I’m the youngest of four. Since everyone seems to be sharing their sibling history.

  7. Tam

How come so many babies hang out here. And no, I didn’t say babes, sorry guys.

  8. Tam: Ah. Another coincidence, like how yesterday I realized a lot of us are single….
So Puntabulous is for all the single babies (now put your hands up!)

Polt: I don’t know who that is. So I’ll just pretend you said that Kate could play Etta James. Which she could TOTALLY do better than Beyonce did.

  9. john

Well, Tam, I like to say my parents stopped when they reached perfection. Perhaps that is true for the others here and great minds think alike?

  10. Tam

John: You’re like a ray of sunshine in my day.

Enrico: You should make some kind of vidoe of that for us. Not everyone’s single, John, Nico, Michelle M. are in happy coupledom, but many of us.

  11. Michelle M.

Tam – don’t forget about Xi and Pi.

john – that’s sweet, too bad Wonder Woman isn’t 5’4″ (and 3/4″). And old. And out of shape. I could go on, but why?

Craig – I always thought Sandra Bullock would make a great WW (her eyes aren’t blue though). Just not Megan Fox, though (she called WW lame). So poop on her.

How about this as a casting choice?:

  12. Paul

Michelle, I don’t know where you found that pic, but they turned me down for the roll of Wonder Woman, I just couldn’t tuck enough!

  13. Tam

He needs to work on his pecs Michelle. :-) Yeah, Megan Fox is a no-no.

Okay, time to go home since I have half my work life in a box, I’ll put the rest in another box tomorrow. Sigh.

  14. Michelle M.

The pic is from our dear friend Polt’s blog.
Polt – Looooved the plump WW pic.

  15. Ack! I think I commented on that horrible Wonder Woman over at the Palace.

Michelle M.: Everyone loves Megan Fox lately! I was wondering if anyone would mention her for the role.

I think Amy Adams should do it. Or Emma Watson. I used to think she was kinda boring but she looks amazing in her most recent photo shoots.

  16. Michelle M.

I have no love for Megan Fox. Amy Adams is an interesting thought. I think she’d have to buff up. And Emma Watson? Isn’t she a little young? I always thought Charisma Carpenter would be good. I know they had cast Megan Gale as WW in the Justice League movie (which is in development hell). It might be good if they go with an unknown.

  17. Ah. Charisma Carpenter does look the part!
Emma Watson is kinda young, but she looks so fierce in her Burberry ads.

  18. Michelle M.

Enrico, I have found the PERFECT Woman!!

  19. When I envision WW, I see a lady who is clean-cut, statuesque, voluptuous, and can be fierce and vicious as hell. I struggle to see any of the current A-list actresses as fitting that description.

Sigourney Weaver? Or is she too old-school to draw the kidz to the theatre?

Who did the Xena series? [looking it up... "Lucy Lawless"... Isn't she married to Blackie Lawless, lead singer of W.A.S.P.? ... alas, no.]

Cameron Diaz might have the chutzpah to pull off the role, although she doesn’t quite fit my visual image of WW.

Hmmm. Thank goodness I’m not a casting director.

  20. Jodie Foster, perhaps?

  21. Tam

TwoPi: Jodie’s too short and fine boned I think. Angelina Jolie in her prime? She’s too scrawny now.

  22. YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!
    Please, someone make this happen!
My girl looks AMAZING in the WW suit!

  23. I was wondering about Angelina, she’s got that ferocity in her eye. I don’t think I’ve seen her act in anything, though (other than “Shark Tale” and “Kung Fu Panda”, but that’s hardly an indication.)

  24. john

Angelina is totally wrong in the face.

  25. Tam

John: But she’s kick your ass. She was pretty vicious in that movie, with that guy and the car and the bendy bullets? Shit. I don’t know, I saw it on a plane.

  26. john

In Wanted? Maybe, but now that she’s had a few kids and no longer eats, I could totally take her.

  27. I WANT RHONETTA! Or Tatiana. Or Jennifer Hudson. Or Syesha. Or any other former American Idol contestant.

I feel so out of touch with all you folks when I come home from work to see all of my Punta friendz deep in a convo I can’t catch up to! Tearz all night!

  28. Tam

John: Yes, that was it. True, now she’s too scrawny.

  29. M. Nicodemus

Hold the phone, what about Lena Headey? She can definitely pull off the fierceness as she proved in The Sarah Connor Chronicles and she can be smoking hot if she wants to be.

  30. josh: Punta friendz….isn’t punta a not-so-nice word in Spanish?

    HUGS…

  31. Michelle M.

No. No. No. No to all the suggestions.
Lena – too scrawny. Angelina – way too scrawny. Cameron – too goofy. Jodie Foster – hells no. Emma too young. Sigourney – too old. Lucy Lawless – too Xena. Kare Beckinsale – too Botoxed.

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned Jessica Biel (who I would veto).

  32. Polterz: Punta means “end” in Spanish; “Puta” meanz bitch o whore.

Spanish lesson for the day is finished.

  33. ew…and Jessica Biel makez me want to murder myself.

Just listen to her sing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73cPTjYoey0

She’s not bad, but TRYING. TOO. HARD.

  34. josh: thank you for the correction, cause I was thinking of puta. I barely know English, so what can one expect?

So…..would a PutaPunta mean a whore’s ass? Or is PuntaPunt slang for killing (the end) of a whore?

    HUGZ….

  35. Jessica Biel? no, no, no, no. I’m still sticking with Famke Janssen.

    HUGS…

  36. Jessica Biel is soooo annoying.
And I think we would all agree that Kristen Stewart is out!

  37. M. Nicodemus

Does anyone else feel like an agent trying to get the casting director (Michelle M.) to pick their client? :) What about Kristen Johnston? Tall, statuesque, not sure about how she would do in a serious roll though…

  38. Michelle M.

    M. Nicky – I know. Who do I think I am to pooh pooh everyone’s ideas? Having said that, Kristen Johnston? She is Amazonian. But. No. Maybe we could just clone Lynda Carter.

  39. M. Nicodemus

Michelle M.:Well, you are the Wonder Woman aficionado so I will gladly bow to your expertise :)

  40. john

    Brook Hogan?

    *ducks to avoid thrown objects*

  41. Tam

John: I thought of her but kept my mouth shut for fear of retribution.

  42. At least she would be better than Kate Winslet.

    ::runs away laughing maniacally::

  43. If Brook Hogan is a contender (can she act?), then surely this starlet deserves some consideration.

    (I’ll go hide now.)

  44. Tam

TwoPi: You are a sick man. Can you BE a starlet and be over 40? I think not. She would fill out the costume though.

Craig: Enrico is going to kick your ass.

  45. john

Craig: “At least she would be better than Kate Winslet.”
    BWAAAA-HA-HA-HA-HA!

  46. Tam

Here is a funny short video someone posted today. the sock gap

  47. That gives the phrase “getting cold feet” a new spin I s’pose.

  48. Um…just in case you hadn’t seen…I already blogged about a beautiful and elegant yet powerful and strong lady that could very well be the perfect Wonder Woman. Such grace…such passion…such…thighz

  49. Tam

I warn you AGAINST clicking Josh’s link. Its frightening.

  50. Tam, I just want to know your name and number [Norma k?!]!
