Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Third Season – Review

buffythirdheader
So I finished the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer last night. Man is it sooo good! My favorite episodes of the season were The Wish and Doppelgangland for the sole fact that there was evil vampire Willow. (“I’m so evil and skanky… and I think I’m kinda gay.”) Other favorite moments were the Christmas episode where it started snowing, the end music montage at the end of Lovers Walk when everyone broke up, and the Prom episode where Buffy got the Class Protector award. Tear!

I also enjoyed the Faith and Mayor season arcs. I’m glad Faith remained ambiguous through the end. It left me feeling that she was genuinely a good person, just conflicted, without hitting me over the head with an over the top redemption scene. And the germaphobic Mayor was just genius. And boy do they really know how to pull out the stops for the season finale unlike some other shows I know! (coughHeroescough) The fight scene between Buffy and Faith was so exciting and well choreographed. You can tell they really want to make the finale special, rather than just making it another fight scene. And the students banding together at the graduation was really fun too.

I thought I’d be more upset about Angel leaving, but I’m actually pretty okay with it. Go start your own show Angel! Your services are no longer required. I used to switch TV shows between seasons, but I’ve changed that philosophy and have decided to concentrate on Buffy this summer. With any luck I’ll be done with the series in a month or so!

I’ve only seen about two random episodes of Buffy so can’t really comment. Sigh. Have a great long weekend all my American friends.

  2. Maestro says:

I am so glad you liked it. Yes evil Willow is the best. And I will take a Buffy/Faith smack down any day. I hate to say Season four will leave you a little wanting especially after season 3. But stick with it there are some great episodes and great story arcs to come. It’s a ritual with me that at the start of the summer I hold up in my apartment for a week or so and get through the whole series before I get out and enjoy the summer break. Well I do skip over some episodes I don’t care for. Have fun.

  3. john says:

I loved Faith! She was so much fun. They also do something with one of their classmates that is great later.

Season three was when I really got on board with Buffy and agree, they really knew how to end a season!

  4. Kelly says:

I loved that show! I haven’t seen it in forever. I might have to do something about that!

  5. Nicolle says:

I’m so glad you are enjoying Buffy. It’s one of my all-time favorite shows. I never really liked Faith, but I enjoyed her relationship with the Mayor.

Speaking of Buffy, have you seen Repo the Genetic Opera movie? It stars Tony Head (Niles). It’s not great, but still interesting. And I liked it much better than the Sweeney Todd movie.

  6. Mary Beth (Cats, Books, Life is Good) says:

Evil vampire Willow is one of my favorites! I love when she walks through saying “Bored now!” before going on a rampage. Buffy rocks!

  7. Jere says:

I’m very tempted to pull out my Buffy DVDs, but I fear getting trapped in my room for the rest of the summer.

  8. Polt says:

Never seen a single episode of Buffy…which considering how you and I NEVER agree on tv shows, should come as no surprise to anyone. :)

Glad you’re stoked about it though.

    HUGS…

  9. digkv says:

OMG yay! Faith is such a great character, and she just makes me love Eliza Dushku so much more in “Dollhouse”, even if she is a lousy actress. “Dopplegangland” was a brilliant and hilarious episode too :D . I really can’t wait until you watch more since it really just gets better from there! And watch “Angel” too, which is such a drastically different show. Some seasons of “angel” were even superior to some in Buffy, I think, but that’s only if you like “angel’s” neo-noir detective mystery theme. So glad you are getting into Buffy Craig haha :D

  10. digkv says:

Jere: My summer after I graduated High school was spent not partying but watching every single episode of Buffy and then Angel, switch every other episode to get the full experience. Ha Though at my obsessive watching I finished it about a month and it was a brilliant way to spend the summer :D

  11. Jere says:

digkv: I’ve lost many, many weeks in marathon viewing. I have nothing against it, but I sorta want to enjoy being outdoors on occasion this summer. I’ll be spending the next 3 years in law libraries and classrooms. Maybe in December I can give in to the lazy Buffy/Angel coma.

  12. The Ryan with the Cupcake says:

So many shows; so little time.

Buffy is on my list of shows to watch, but I’m not sure when I’ll get around to it.

  13. The Infamous Dr. Para says:

After you’re done with Buffy, move on to True Blood … God, what a show, I was hooked after the first episode and I just sent one of my “minions” to fetch the entire season from Best Buy.

  14. Enrico says:

Yay!!! I love season 3! So many great moments that season… and in every season…. I have to rewatch the whole series some day. Maybe Jere and I can have a Buffy marathon weekend.

Speaking of Joss, I’m watching Firefly now. But I’m only 2 eps in.

  15. Michelle M. says:

Bring on season 4! Buffy in college – there are some pretty good/funny episodes. I really liked the roommate episode. Hush is great. I still laugh at the cheese guy in Restless. Something Blue is very cute. I wasn’t too big on Riley. Have fun watching!

  16. Enrico says:

Michelle: “Hush” is always rated as the best Buffy episode in polls. I like “The Body” and “Once More With Feeling” better though. But “Hush” is really good! And “Restless” is great, but def not the kind of season finale that Craig apparently likes! lol.

  17. Heath Buckmaster says:

It’s so retro that you’re watching these so many years after they aired. However, I begrudgingly admit that I’m ahead of you on the retro. I’ve actually been having my own personal Murder She Wrote marathon – we’re talking back to 1984…..it’s insane. Although even more insane is that I have almost the entire series on DVD – all 11 or 12 seasons of it (only waiting for the last few seasons to be released).

    I think I need therapy ;-) .

  18. digkv says:

Michelle: OMG “hush” is one of my fav episodes of all time, it’s one of the greatest episodes of any tv series. It is deliciously scary and moody and just absolutely brilliant. Though I gotta say I agree with Enrico that “Once more with feeling” is the best ha.

Enrico: Firefly! Oh how I loved that show so much, do tell us how you like it in the end. and be sure to watch Serenity after you’re done! Not before like I did which kind of ruined the series a bit.

  19. Michelle M. says:

Enrico and digkv – “Once More with Feeling” is fantastic, but that’s not until season 6. I was just going over the 4th season.

Heath – Murder She Wrote? Really? That’s cute : ).

  20. digkv says:

Michelle: Ah ha sorry then yes, “hush” is the best of season 4 and I think it’s the 2nd best episode of Buffy ever. I love buffy in college so much more, I really think the show got a lot more complex at this point and delved into deeper characters and more intricate storylines. What would you consider to be the best eppy out of all the seasons michelle? :D

  21. john says:

“Hush” is really amazing, but I have to say, “The Body” is my favorite. I also like “Halloween”.

  22. Enrico says:

John: I loved the end of “Halloween” (with Willow) as well as the basic premise. And it’s amazing that we all know these episodes by title!

  23. Michelle M. says:

digkv – Hmmm… I need to think about that one! Without giving anything away to Craig… I do like the episodes with Buffy/Spike and the Trio crack me up. I’ll let you know when I pick one. Love the slideshow sequence in Hush!

  24. Enrico says:

Oh no. If season 4 is her first year of college, doesn’t that mean it’s the season that features the worst Buffy episode, “Beer Bad”?

  25. digkv says:

Michelle: I loved those eppys too! They were just a lot of fun and it was just great. and the slideshow sequence! hilarity!

Enrico: haha who doesn’t love an episode of Buffy that has 2 moral lessons! Christian values in a show about vampires? Yes please.

  26. john says:

Enrico: I totally had to look up titles. The only two I know without looking up are “Hush” and “The Body”. I didn’t know the title of the musical episode and I know I’m taking a risk here saying this, but I wasn’t that impressed by it either. It was good, but not a favorite of mine.

  27. Maestro says:

“the body” is season five but is so good. and so sad. I actually cried in that one that and “Tabula Rasa” in season six. I cried when Michelle Branch was singing “Goodbye to You” at the Bronze. I love Buffy one of my all time favorite series I have actually started reading the comics just to keep following the story. But glad Craig that you are enjoying it.

  28. Michelle says:

Nicolle I’m really looking forward to Repo Man. Tony Head is awesome. You were sooo right about Dr. Horrible! I wish that they would bring that to Broadway.

Craig. So happy that you’re enjoying Buffy. The Christmas and Prom episodes are my favorites from that season. I cried! I loved Evil Willow too. I always showed Earshot to my Freshman because it has a great message and gets them hooked on Buffy. Angel becomes great once he has his own show. Buffy has the best season finales, 3, 5 &6 my favorites.

4 has the weakest villian/ending but still has some great episodes. I actually thought Beer Bad was funny! A New Man was hilarious for Tony Head. Hush definitely the scariest. The best part of 4 is how Spike becomes a part of the gang. Hang in there until 5 because it has one of the best villians, Glory.

  29. Hayden says:

I wish she would act more than she does she is so cute. Do you think Freddie Prinze Jr. has her tied up? I know I would…..

  30. Michelle M. says:

Hayden – some of her upcoming stuff is on IMDB:
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001264/
She’s pregnant and expecting in the fall.

  31. Philip says:

Enrico: Have fun with Firefly. What a great series! It was one of the only scifi shows I’ve ever been able to get my partner into. So tragically short-lived.

Ok, one more here to add to the Joss Weadon fan club. I love Buffy. I am very proud of the fact that I started watching it when it first aired. I really loved that they were able to keep a lot of continuity between seasons, even with minor characters (like Jonathan). I have to agree that “Hush” and “Once More, With Feeling” were definitely my favorites. I also really liked “Primeval” in season 4 and “The Gift”.

I know a lot of people didn’t much care for Seasons 6 and 7, but I still loved this series up until the very end. I was actually quite satisfied with the end of the series (much more than with the end of BSG). It doesn’t hurt that “Once More, with Feeling” was part of Season 6. Any thoughts? Love the last two seasons? Hate them?

  32. digkv says:

Philip: i loved seasons 6 and 7 as well. I think most people disliked them because well, they were slow and not much happened in them as individual episodes, so like if you watched it on tv, I can see how someone could lose the desire to watch it. But on DVD, those were the strongest and most developed seasons. Being able to watch those episodes back to back really showed how complex they were and how thoroughly satisfying Buffy is. Really, season 6 was my favorite season of Buffy just because it was so beautiful.

  33. GoKitty says:

Yes, i’m coming in late because I’ve been off visiting mom for a week but I do love Buffy and I think it was one of my initial suggestions and I like to take credit for everything Craig likes except for the icky graphic novel phase he’s going through.

I actually watching season two of Angel right now which is taking a great deal of effort because i HATE Angel. I’ve never liked him, not on buffy and not on his own show. I’m only watching his show because its part of the buffyverse and I must absorb all things buffy. The only bright spots so far for me are Wesley and Lorne.

  34. Hayden says:

Michelle M: thanks for the update…now I am so jealous of Freddie P Jr…..

  35. Denise says:

I haven’t checked in on your blog in…uhm….an uncharacteristically long time. There is no possible way I could convey to you just how happy it made me today to see that you’ve been watching Buffy–a show I still mourn over and long for every time some new show fails to meet my high expectations. I’m afraid the awesomeness of Buffy spoiled me. Nothing else can live up to it in quite the same way.

Tell Me What a Dork I Am!
