Let’s Talk About Movies

1. When me and my Mom went to see Star Trek a while back, during the trailers Mom leaned in to me and said in all seriousness “This looks like my type of movie!” Guess which trailer it was? That’s right: G.I. Joe. I have no idea what my political thriller enjoying Mom saw in G.I. Joe that thought it would be up her alley, but she was really excited. “What have you heard about it?” she asked me, knowing I usually have some inside scoop about upcoming movies. I didn’t have the heart to tell her it’s going to be a disaster.

2. Speaking of the G.I. Joe trailer, I love the part when the general is like “These are blah blah blah accelerator suits.” and Marlon Wayans is like “What’s… it… accelerate?” and the general is like “You.” Like seriously? It’s a suit, that you wear, called an accelerator suit! What else would it accelerate?

3. A third Bridget Jones movie? Yes please!

4. District 9 opens August 14th and it looks awesome.

5. Funny People? Ugh. I’m so over you Judd Apatow (and Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen). Eric Bana can stay though.

6. Who’s excited about the new Harry Potter movie? I know I am! It’s getting awesome reviews too! Prisoner of Azkaban is currently my favorite, followed by Order of the Phoenix. I’ve heard some people say pretty negative things about both of them, and they consider Goblet of Fire the best one, but I couldn’t disagree more. Goblet of Fire was super disappointing for me. Remember when Dumbledore practically attacked Harry after his name was pulled out of the goblet? Awful! Or maybe it was all the bad hair?

  1. Funny People looks good. Harry Potter looks marginal – none of the movies have been very good, especially compared to the books, but I’m willing to give it another shot.

  2. Cam & I have been rewatching the Potters and Goblet was better than I remember. I’m in totally agreement with you. Prisoner was the best ‘film’. Phoenix got the essence of the book more than any other of the films, so I’ve very excited to see Prince because it’s the same director. We seeing it tonight at 11pm.

  3. Avitable: I’m shaking my fist at you.

Howard: Yeah, I’m glad it’s the same guy finishing out the series. I think he really understands the HP universe.

  4. I may have to wait a few weeks to see Harry Potter until I have money in the bank again, so be careful with the spoilers. Oh, wait, I already read the book. Nevermind.

Totally agree about Apatow, Rogen, and Sandler. Bana, too.

  5. HP:PoA is definitely the best movie to date (although not the best book, that might be the Goblet of Fire). Book 6 was my least favorite of the HP series, so I don’t have high hopes for the film. Of course, I will still go see it. I read that it’s more Romantic Comedy than dark.

And, OMG!, another Bridget Jones movie would be SuperAwesome!

  6. Tam

Totally excited over Harry Potter although Kristen is pissed we’ll be on vacation because she wants to see it in 3-D Imax. You have Imax movie theatres down there right? So we might go on vacation or when we get back.

Your Mom and I would get along great. :-) I too saw the trailer and though “wow, this looks good” and then I saw the title and went “oh” and was sad. Sigh. I knew it would be crap. I have a feeling with Funny People all the funny stuff was in the trailer. If you’ve seen that, no need to go.

Oh and Bridget Jones? *gag* Me and chick flicks don’t get along. I don’t like Puffy Face that much either.

  7. Tam: Yeah, my Mom was like “Whaaaaaat?” at the end when the G.I. Joe title came up. I think she was a little disappointed too.

  8. Even if GIJoe sucks, it’s goe Channing Tatum in tight clothing in it, so I’m there.

I don’t know the Potter movie titles, but I liked the one where they had the competition, cause the two other male competitors of Harry’s, especially that Hunky Eastern European looking dude, were magic to my eyeballs!

    HUGS…

  9. tea time

I always wanted that perfect beard that the GI Joe doll had.

  10. john

I actually want to see GI Joe, I like me a good train wreck sometimes. And really, can it be worse than Terminator 4?

Very much looking forward to Harry Potter. Book 3 was my least favorite book and movie. Goblet was my favorite book along with Half Blood Prince.

Funny People looks like it has potential, though I am over Seth Rogan too. If Adam Sandler doesn’t yell through the whole movie, if could be good.

Craig: Your comment about Dumbledore in Goblet made me think of this: CLICK HERE

  11. John: Terminator 4 was good! That link is blocked at work. :-(

  12. Oh please, Phoenix sucked ass. It was supposed to be about, well, the Order of the Phoenix and all we got was two hours of middling tripe and then someone died that we should have cared about but didn’t because the film was so bad. (See how I did that with no spoilers for the uninitiated? I’m good.) Goblet was by far the best so far; it was dark and dangerous, just like it should be.

I want Moon on general release!

  13. Sven: Blasphemy! The last 20 minutes of OOTP were worth the price of admission alone!

  14. Nicolle

Sorry Craig, but I’m with Sven on this one. I was really disappointed in the Order of the Phoenix. I watched it again a month ago and still didn’t like it. I then watched Goblet of Fire again and thought it was awesome. (Disclaimer: I haven’t read any of the books–so my opinion is based solely on the movies.)

I agree about Seth Rogen though–I’m sick of him too. Although I loved Pineapple Express!

  15. Speaking of movies, The Watchmen comes out this Tuesday. Suh-WEET!

    HUGS…

  16. I’ve enjoyed all the Potter films so far, though for me, the first one is the least of them. I think OOTP and HBP are more about setting up the final confrontation than forwarding the plot any, so they’re better looked at as character studies.

I thought about seeing Funny People, but at 2h20m, I’ll wait until DVD.

I saw Fighting since Channing Tatum was in it, so I guess I’ll be seeing G.I. Joe also. Though Marlon Wayans… *shudder*.

  17. Tam

Check you gmail Craig. I send you the pic.

  18. I was supposed to see Harry at midnight but my stupid friend scored an interview this morning and didn’t wanna be up late. Lame.

So I’m going tonight! I liked all the movies except for the first two, which I thought were kinda boring.

  19. Thanks Tam and john! That was awesome.

  20. john

I love that drawing! She was so right.

Craig: Terminator 4 was good? Really? Did we see the same movie?

Sven: I’m so excited about Moon! It looks really good.

I saw the second trailer for District 9 last night before BrĂ¼no (I don’t want to talk about it) and I’m even more excited about it than I was after seeing the first trailer.

  21. Yes I believe we did! It wasn’t the best movie ever, but it was a perfectly suitable summer popcorn movie!

  22. john

Not movie related, but comic related. The X-Men Relationship Map: CLICK HERE

  23. Coty

I really wouldn’t waste your money on Half Blood Prince if you’re expecting an epic battle or some sort of closure on Dumbledore.

    I’m just saying.

  24. Mel

*sigh* I’m so behind on all the movies. I think I saw OOTP on a plane to somewhere (or maybe the ferry home from Nova Scotia last summer) and the video kept messing up, so I don’t know that I even saw all of it. Someday, though, I need to sit down and have a HP marathon movie day.

As for GI Joe, I had one of the old school Joes as a kid, so I never really got into the newer version – that was my baby brother’s thing. Still, I agree that it’d probably be fun summer fare.

  25. Check out one of the new Potter kids: CLICK HERE

Way hotter than Robert (Twinkly Vampire) Pattinson who played Cedric who was supposed to be the hottest guy at Hogwarts.

  26. john

My friend says that the hottest Harry Potter kid to date was Oliver Wood as played by Sean Biggerstaff.

    LOL! Biggerstaff…

  27. OMG OMG OMG, a movie post where I actually have an opinion and something to say!!

Hold on, my hands are shaking.

As another non-reader of the books, I enjoyed POA more than GOF because the contests themselves were just stoopid. OOP was very good too, for me. I think not reading the books works to my advantage since I’m not expecting any particular moments to show up on screen, just allowing whatever narrative the director has chosen to roll out in front of me.

I hear that HBP is the Empire Strikes Back of the HP movies. It basically bridges the earlier action until it can be resolved in a later film. As long as you go in with that in mind, I’m sure it’s a great flick.

I’m excited to see Helena Bonham-Carter get more screen time and be really evil. She seems to be featured significantly in the trailers. At least more than in the past.

And regarding the GI Joe trailer where the talk about the accelerator suits, I thought it was just some sexual innuendo, like, Wayans thought it could make you able to go all night long or something.

Wow that was fun. Hope to do this again sometime before 2010.

  28. john, since Wolverine has the most lines radiating from him on the relationship chart, that makes him the wanton slut of the X-Men universe, right? :)

    HUGS…

  29. M. Nicodemus

Hmm… I will have to go back and re-watch the HP movies before I weigh in on this one, they all blend together in my mind and it is hard to seperate out what was in which film.

I am definitely going to wait until G.I. Joe comes out on DVD before I watch it; accelerator suits? Really? And the scene in the trailer where two guys are running down the street dodging missles and shooting bad guys, wasn’t that JUST done in Transformers?

John: I agree with your friend, I thought Sean was the best of the Hogwarts bunch… until I clicked on Craigs link, Yowza!

  30. And how come I can’t find Northstar on there? Aren’t gay men in the X-Men universe allowed to have relationships…hell, flirtations, with anyone else???? I mean, they got Mystique and Destiny in a “serious relationship” and they even got a line connecting Karma and Shadowcat, although I got no idea what THAT’S all about. But not even a photo of Northstar.

    Typical.

    HUGS…

  31. john

Polt: Oh yeah, he’s a total whore.

  32. john

Polt: Just for clarification: Wolverine is the whore. Not Northstar. And Northstar is on the image. Look at about the center of the image and go to the bottom to find Iceman. Northstar had a mad crush on him. The image of Northstar is below Iceman and to the right.

  33. Tam

john: Oh yeah, Oliver Wood was smokin’. Sigh. And young. LOL And with the best real name ever. Well, I assume its real unless he was in porn before turning to legit film.

Craig: Oh my, he is nice.

  34. I thought that the 5th Harry Potter movie was pretty good considering that it was my least favorite of all the books. Harry Potter was just too whiney in both the book and the movie. I think that people that have read the books already know that going into it and are not bothered as much by all the whining than people that have not read the books. The 4th book was just so good that the 4th movie could not help but be a dissappointment to those of us that read the books (plus those shaggy hair cuts that everyone was sporting were also pretty terrible).

  35. My only movie recommendation is the documentary about Valentino, aptly named Valentino: The Last Emperor. I just makes me want to have 5 pugs and fly them around on a private jet. Other than that, I’m only looking forward to Harry Potter which I probably won’t see until Friday.

Also, did anyone tell Craig that the Admiral of the Pegasus is playing a maened on True Blood?

  36. OMG the name GoKitty is now a link!

  37. john

GoKitty: I don’t recommend 5 pugs. One of my sisters has three and they are a handful and a half.

Michelle Forbes is awesome in everything she does. I loved her as he Admiral of the Pegasus and she is doing a good job as Maryanne.

  38. Already saw Harry Potter, put up some quick thoughts on the movie as well. I liked it, it was better than Phoenix I thought. The romance is more like dirty sexual innuendos though. You will cringe :)

I will go see GI Joe only to see how much they screwed up a favorite childhood cartoon. Destro has no mask and those suits? Please! If they wanted to make a Halo movie then they should have done that, not forced it into GI Joe. Clearly the Halo fanboys will love it I’m sure.

    Go Joe!

  39. john: okay, thanks I see Northstar now. They used a crappy artist drawing to depict him, thus, I missed him. Thought it was of a woman.

But do YOU get the Karma-Shadowcat line? I haven’t read anything, really, of the X-Men in years, what did I miss there?

    HUGS…

  40. Craig: Yes, I’m a link now.. or rather, again. Everyone needs to email Jem and ask for her sage advice…sprinkled with glitter.

  41. john

Polt: News to me. According to the chart, Karma was infatuated with her. I’m thought they hinted at a possible relationship between Phoenix (Rachel Summers, not Jean) and Shadowcat at one point.

I agree, that is not the best drawing of Northstar. I think that was done by a manga artist who drew the book for a while. I can’t remember the artist, but I have Chiho Saito stuck in my head.

  42. Michelle M.

My first thought on seeing the GI Joe trailer was, “I have no desire to see this.” I think it’s all kinds of cute that your mom does, though.

David – If you find you have no opinion/nothing to say about the daily post, just wait an hour. Everyone will be talking about underwear. Or booze (except Enrico). Or pet rocks. If not, you could just comment about how cute/smart/talented our Craig is, just like a good little dancing monkey should.

  43. I checked out Karma on Wikipedia and apparently, she was one of the first out lesbians heroes in the Marvel Universe! When the HELL did THAT happen???? And yeah, the manga X-Men art sucked total adamantium.

    HUGS…

  44. When she started traveling the the universe as a cosmic pop star.

  45. john

Polt: I didn’t know that! I loved Karma as a character and always resented what they did with her. Her introduction was really good. Poor Xi’an.

  46. I dont know if any of the comic dorks read, or know about, Pink Kryptonite for gossip on comics.
