G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – Review

There are two kinds of silly movies. Good silly, and bad silly. And I don’t mean silly as in getting hit in the face with a banana cream pie. Bad silly movies are so over-the-top and ridiculous that they pass over the realm of fun and enter offensively bad territory. I’d say that movies in this category would be Stephen Sommers’ previous movies The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing, both of which I hated. Good silly, are movies that are still ridiculous, but still manage to be fun, and don’t insult your intelligence by just throwing stuff at the screen and expecting you to be entertained. I’d say this category falls more in line with The Mummy, and now G.I. Joe.
It was pretty much non-stop action from beginning to end, but the story for the most part made sense (not to be confused with “was logical”, but “made sense” meaning that it wasn’t Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen nonsense) and kept me entertained for two full hours which seemed like a lot less. The actors all seemed to know what they had gotten themselves into and had fun with it. I think this was the first movie I’ve ever actually seen with Sienna Miller and I have to say, I think she was pretty genius. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) Channing Tatum seemed like the major weak link acting wise (excluding whoever played Cover Girl because OMG she was bad) as he just seemed to mumble his way through the movie.
The action was pretty cool, though the special effects were shoddy in places. The chase through Paris was fun, and the hand to hand fights were pretty well done too. I was expecting the fights between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow to be much better than they actually were though. It seemed like Snake Eyes’ bulky outfit kept him from being more agile in them. The fights between the kid versions of these characters during flashbacks were actually a hell of a lot more dynamic than the adult versions, and I have to say, I like any movie which encourages ten year olds to beat the crap out of each other.
All in all, it was a fun way to spend two hours and way better than that god awful (and approximately 5 hours long) Transformers.

Did your Mom go? What did she think? I think I should base my attendance on her opinion if she went.

LOL. No, she didn’t go. She was very interested to hear what I thought though. I think she’ll wait for the DVD on this one. She doesn’t go to the movies very often and I only drag her to stuff I know she’ll like. I’m not positive she’d appreciate the silliness as much as I do, so I’m not gonna drag her this time.

I don’t know … maybe I just wasn’t in the mood, but I hated this movie. The special effects, the dialogue, the dumb story … it was all just so bad.

Craiggers, I could be wrong, but I don’t think Channing Tatum was in the movie because of his acting skills. I mean, the girlfriends/wives of the GIJoe geekboy need SOME reason to go with them to see this, right?

Polt: Are you insinuating that us ladies can’t appreciate a good special effect and some kick-ass hand-to-hand combat without eye-candy to alleviate the tedium? Ummm, you could be right.
Maybe I’ll drag my daughter to it Friday night.

Tam: I think YOU could appreciate that type of film without eye candy, but 1) why would you WANT to? and 2) I was talking about gf’s/wives that wouldn’t normally go see something like that. Perhaps I’ll drag some straight male friends to see it. We’ll both like it, but for probably different reasons.

I don’t particularly like Sienna Miller but I thought she did a great job portraying Edie Sedgewick in Factory Girl. Then again, I’m fascinated with Andy Warhol and anyone who floated in his periphery.
I wanted to see this movie until I found out they werent going to screen it for the critics. Now, I’m just waiting for District 9.

I liked it, too. It was stupid as fuck, but fun to experience. And the Paris car chase was pretty impressive.

Exactly!
