Okay, so Season 4 (Volume 5: Redemption) of Heroes has been going pretty well so far. I’m always hesitant to say it’s going well because I’m always let down by the end of the season. I thought Season 3 started out great, with the Level 5 villains and Sylar being back to full power. But it once again fizzled out. Why oh why do I continue to torture myself? I think it’s because I’m already invested in the characters and the show has so much potential. Remember how great the first season was? Remember what you expected this show to become? I was certain that the first season would be them coming together (which it was) then the second season would be them forming a crimefighting team, then by the third or fourth season that they will have turned into leather-clad superheroes in a secret base being completely comic-booky. Seems silly, but wouldn’t that have been better than where we are now? Just new villains every season (except Sylar, who is on his third of fourth bout of amnesia) and they all continue not to stay in the same state. At least if they did the evolution into true superheroes route, it would have given the show a stronger sense of continuity, and you would have gotten to an end point with 4 strong seasons rather than 1 strong one and 3 weak ones and constantly being on the verge of cancellation. We may never see them in leather now!
Anyway, this post is supposed to be about this season. There are gonna be some minor spoilers so don’t read if you’re one of the three people still watching and aren’t caught up. So the circus folk are pretty creepy. I’m not certain what controlling dirt has to do with the tattoo ability of the main baddie, but hopefully that will get explained at some point. Hiro and Ando forming the crimefighting business has been fun. I liked when he went back in time and fixed the relationship between his sister and Ando. I also thought the storyline with the guy photocopying his ass was pretty clever. Tracy continues to be pretty useless and even Noah isn’t being as cool as he normally is. Matt on the other hand was actually interesting (for the first time in the series) with his Sylar visions. And the Nathan Petrelli storyline from last week was fun. I liked the standalone aspect of it and of course seeing Swoosie Kurtz again doesn’t hurt.
So while this season has been good, you’re getting this post today because I thought last night’s episode was really good. Firstly, they only focused on just a few of the characters, which is what always makes a good episode because they really get to concentrate on them and give them depth. What really stood out last night was how fun the episode was. Peter trying to do his fast running thing, with the music starting up and stopping was really great, and Claire at the speeding dating type sorority thing was also fun. And they left us with some nice revelations and cliffhangers too. The deaf woman’s powers going out of control, the explanation of Claire’s roommate, and the circus mysteriously disappearing were all interesting. Don’t worry, I’m sure next week will be a disaster. Micah will show up with Nikki and DL who are both alive, Sylar will turn good, then evil, then good, then get amnesia again, and we’ll get an enormous close up of Matt Parkman’s confused face for 20 minutes straight. But let me enjoy a good episode while it lasts.

Heroes – meh. OMG, Paris Hilton is going to be on Supernatural this week. I hope Dean freaking stakes her. THAT would be funny. She’s playing herself.

I don’t know … I constantly toying with the idea of giving up on Heroes. I’m not really enjoying this season at all, with the exception of Peter and the deaf woman’s story line. I think that the only thing that would save this show for me would be a mass-suicide of about 3/4 of the cast. I’m sick of Ando, Parkman, Niki, Nathan. Kill ‘em off (for good), make Hiro cool (like the future Hiro we saw in Season 1) and then the show could be great again.

Maybe ink is derived from earth? I dont know anything about ink but thats what they’re leading me to believe at least.
The deaf girl reminds me of Dazzler from the Marvel universe. She could convert sound to light and, I believe, she could make solid light… but mainly she just went around shooting it as lasers.
The whole carnival thing just keeps reminding me of Carnivale which was a GREAT show. That first season moved so deliciously slow and kept you guessing the whole way. I was not surprised it got canceled though because it was way too complex and metaphorical for a regular viewing audience but I still highly recommend it.

I was all about Heroes in the first season. the second season, with like 8 episodes shown and NOTHING happening…I gave up. haven’t been back since. I prefer my Sylar with pointy ears and no emotions.

Go Kitty: Agreed, Carnivale was a great show! Also, yes, Dazzler could make light solid, but she did mostly just shoot lasers. The Dazzler graphic novel was one of the best Marvel ever did and I thought would make a great movie.

Yeah, I gave up on Heroes a couple of episodes into the second season; the story lines just seemed to forced, and just boring. I am realizing just how fickle of a TV viewer I am. Currently there are only two shows that I care enough to watch regularly and even those I will let sit on my TiVo for a few weeks before viewing. Basically I feel that TV in general these days is pretty meh.

Heroes was great when Brian Fuller was on board. Then he left to do Pushing Daisies and Heroes sucked. Then Pushing Daisies got cancelled, and Heroes magically stopped sucking. But now he left again to start a new show. So I’m willing to bet the suckage will be returning later this season.

I used to watch Heroes! Then I kept falling asleep during the episodes and didn’t have the energy to watch them online. And I couldn’t watch episode 7 without seeing episode 6, etc. etc. and I just stopped watching. I felt like the show had some interesting story lines, some boring ones, and I didn’t feel like sitting through the boring ones to get to the good stuff.

I’m still working my way slowly through the seasons on Netflix. I think because I don’t really work myself up to great expectations over TV shows generally, I don’t get as invested in the ups and downs of the storytelling. That James Kyson Lee sure is a cutie, though. Curiously enough, I happened to see him a couple weeks ago in a bit role as a Korean LVPD cop on an episode of CSI from a couple seasons back. They had him either slightly out of focus or only showed part of his face in any of the scenes he was in, and I wondered if they’d done that because of his role on Heroes.

Nico: I use things piling up in my Hulu queue as a sign that I don’t really like a show. I stopped watching Warehouse 13 when I realized that I was only watching episodes when they were about to expire.

I had to skip this yesterday, because I was waiting for Chaz to come home from school before we sat and watched Monday’s episode (just in case there were spoilers).
My favorite thing about this season so far is the budding romance between Peter and the deaf woman, since Peter being happy is *way* overdue. And the fact that this light thing is more than just a pretty power might prove interesting too.
I love Heroes, I really do. I’ve seen every episode. But I’m disappointed in it too. It has so damn much potential that’s just never quite reached. They focus too much on the drama and intrigue and not enough on the action. It’s all foreplay with no orgasm.
You’re right, Craig, they need to get together as a team. I’d love to see Hiro survive and fund an Avengers-like group of heroes. Peter as the team leader, Noah as the guy that watches the dog while their gone. Maybe have a Terra-type of saboteur amongst their ranks that attempts to take them out. Or have a group of baddies that forms against them with Sylar on the outside doing stuff to egg things on for his mere enjoyment. That would be super fun.

Cupcake: I only watch Warehouse 13 ’cause it is one of a few that the Mrs. and I will actually watch together. I don’t really love it, but I can tolerate it better than most of the reality shows she watches.
The one I currently have in my queue that keeps getting pushed off “for another night” is Sanctuary, not quite ready to give up on it but not all that enthused either.

I just stumbled across your blog, and I swear that I have been reading it for the past hour. That thing about how to become a super villain made me laugh so hard I got a headache (honestly!). I think its amazing that you are a Heroes fan like me and I agree, what is up with the rest of the seasons not being as fantastic as the first one. I own all of them and most of the time I only watch the 1st. I wish that the writers would get back into it and just start pulling out that stuff that attracted me to the show in the first place. I think by now it is becoming too focused on Sylar as a villain and I really wish that they would just kill him off for good. Samuel as a villain is pretty fantastic. For some reason I find myself liking him and hating him at the same time. I can’t figure out what his MO is, but I hope that once they show the audience what it is that I am just completely blown away. I really hope they get Noah back to his badass status, because he is one of my favorite parts of the show. He just kicks ass and then takes names. So awesome. XD.
