Death by Wii EA Sports Active

OooOoOOoOOOoooOOOoo! I am the ghoooost of Craaaiiiig reaching out from the grave! No, I wasn’t murdered during Blogger Karaoke Night (as much as they wanted to). Oh you’ll be hearing about the night later this week, but there are pictures on Facebook if you want a preview. Instead, I have died from working out for the first time in over a year. Upon my friend Lance’s recommendation I picked up Wii’s EA Sports Active (about two months ago and it’s been sitting on the entertainment center with the bestest of intentions).

Now I know what you’re thinking. “Oh Craig, but you’re soooo good looking! You don’t need to work out! We think you’re perfect just the way you are!” See? Aren’t I good at that? Oh, except David. He’s nodding his head in approval and wondering why I’m blogging and not working out at this very minute. So to prove to you that I am a disgusting slob, I remind you of THIS post where I got zebra stripe sunburns from my fatty fat fat rolls. And yeah, that was a year ago, so there has been a whole year of not working out since then.

Anyway, unlike Wii Fit where you just get to pick the fun games and watch your parents do silly stuff, EA Sports Active has a 30 Day Challenge where it tells you exactly which exercises to do. I only did the first day yesterday, but exercises thus far have included bicep curls and row thingamajigs (Both done with a resistance band. The game came with one, but it was pretty cheap so I got a better one from Target.), running, aerobics, and cardio-karate. In the beginning I was asked if I wanted to do easy, medium, or hard. I LOLed at the idea of doing easy. “Puny mortals!” I laughed as I chose medium. Anyway, the point of the story is that I was a sweaty, disgusting mess after my 25 minutes were up and subsequently died. And even though I’m dead, I’m somehow still sore as heck. And I have to do it again today! With new exercies! I’m going to die and die and die for 30 days. Luckily it’s 2 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on, 1 day off, and so forth. I’m already looking forward to Tuesday.

Yeah, for some reason, in matters of fitness videos and programs “medium” is almost always code for “Hello Sisyphus, why don’t you push this 500lb boulder up a hill, then you’ll be done. We promise.”

Maybe it’s too early for my nerdy Greek mythology jokes.

  • By Craig, October 19, 2009 @ 8:29 am

It’s never too early! (Though for a second I thought you said syphilis.)

  • By Enrico, October 19, 2009 @ 8:34 am

    Yay! Sisyphus!
    BOOOO! Working out!

I work out sometimes…. Meaning I walk to class, then back to my car! Ugh. Exhausting!

Well done. Hope you don’t lose focus on Day 1 off. I would. Maybe David can come and stand over you with a whip and make sure you keep it up. That might be enjoyable no? ;-)

Jere: It’s never too early for Greek mythology jokes.

Oy vey, trust me, I know what it’s like to excercise for the first time after a long period of inactivity. I tend to work out in three month streaches followed by nine months of TV and video games. The bad news: the second day is always worse than the first. The good news: after the first week you should not get sore any more. You will need to keep us posted on the effects of Wii Sport Active on your cute and cuddly love handles :)

Actually it is funny you should post this today as I am starting back at the gym this evening. I was issued a challenge by a facebook friend to lose 20lbs by my birthday, which is’t that far off. Wish me luck!

I really want this game! I need to get my butt back in shape!!!!!

  • By josh, October 19, 2009 @ 12:08 pm

I went running today for three miles (aka only the 3:30+ duration of P!nk’s “So What” feat. me pretending I was on “American Idol” singing to an ex) and then gave up and walked to the coffee shop to blog.

Good jerb though! I too am working out with video games. Mis dedoz are getting a run for their $$$ after I downloaded Donkey Kong Country on my Wii this weekend! Phew!

Craig: Why are you working out? You looked totally buff in that one photo.

  • By Craig, October 19, 2009 @ 2:56 pm

Ryan: Huh? When I first read your comment I was looking for a hyperlink to bring me to a pic of my head photoshopped onto a bodybuilders body.

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, October 19, 2009 @ 3:07 pm

    Happy?

  • By Craig, October 19, 2009 @ 3:12 pm

    Very! :-)

  • By Polt, October 19, 2009 @ 4:52 pm

Okay, but Craiggers, before you died, did you cry? And after you died, did they drag you to hell?

Hmm, perhaps, had I written it…
    “Andthenicriedandthenidiedandthentheydraggedmehell….copterz”
it would have sounded more appropriate. :)

    HUGS….

Jere: Never to early for a good Greek mythology joke. I also read syphilis at first.

I’ve been working out quite a bit lately and have lost weight. I’m limited in the amount of upper body work I can do because of a nasty case of tennis elbow.

The only bad part about that is I’m doing all leg work and had to buy jeans a size bigger than I needed to get my legs into them.

And the ladies thought only they had this problem.

  • By josh, October 19, 2009 @ 5:09 pm

Exactly Polt…I’m glad you got the order down correctly:

    Cry.
    Die.
    Get dragged to hell.
    Then repeat.

  • By jere, October 19, 2009 @ 6:37 pm

Now you’re skipping a step, Josh.

    Cry.
    Die.
    Get dragged to hell.
Note that “3″ is number 1.
    Then repeat.

You could do the Puntabulous Workout every third day.

Good for you! However, I have to say that you do a good job of hiding whatever weight you are concerned about. My first impression of you in person was that you were slimmer than I expected.

Unfortunately I fell out of my daily push-up routine. :( I need to get back to that. I used to use resistance bands. I liked them. I wonder where mine went. Hmmm…. Sticking with things is always hard. I bought a chin up bar a few weeks ago. I need to install that… I think that if I can get some inspirational workout music setup in my basement that might make it easier to get into it.

Starting is always hard, but once you start to feel (and see) the results you will want to push yourself more. I love how tight and hard-bodied I feel once I have been working out for a few days.

  • By Polt, October 19, 2009 @ 9:40 pm

Sassy josh: See I WAS paying attention!

    Jere: teehee….you crack me up…

    HUGS…

  • By Enrico, October 19, 2009 @ 10:14 pm

    You’re all wrong.

Do your job (and don’t get appreciated for it)
    Get dragged to hell
    Smile and scream in joy
    Pray for repetition

  • By josh, October 19, 2009 @ 10:17 pm

Oh Enrico…you forgot the step right after screaming for joy:

Listen to “All I Ever Wanted” an equal amount of times as that of “Funhouse” so when Enrico & Josh quiz you about it, you’ll be able to give them a track-by-track detailed opinion of the record.

Yeah, exercise s a real bitch.

  • By dcm, October 22, 2009 @ 9:15 pm

Given the crassness of we Puntabu-commenters, I’m amazed that nobody has yet offered to exercise your Wii for you.

  • By James, October 23, 2009 @ 8:15 am

I’m on Day 8 of the 30-day challenge. I chose to play on hard, which was foolish, but now there’s no turning back!

Eph jump lunges. If you haven’t gotten to them yet, you’ll soon know what I mean.

Good call getting rid of your old resistance band. Here’s some suggestions for what you can do with the one that came with the game: http://bit.ly/2nx4CY

  • By Craig, October 23, 2009 @ 8:36 am

That is hysterical! Thanks for the link James!
