Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Fifth Season – Review

So I finished the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer yesterday. What a great season! Glory was such an amazing villain! So much better than the Initiative/Adam big bad of last season and might even surpass the awesome Mayor of season 3. The whole season long arc this season was really well done even though it introduced us to Dawn (ugh) the whole thing was handled really well. The season started off a little slow with the high point being Harmony (I love Harmony!) and her band of minions, and Riley wearing out his welcome. But by the time we got to the scene where Buffy is running after the helicopter, I was totally enraptured.

Spike was on top of his game this season. I love the slow burning relationship he’s built with all the Summers girls which led up superbly to the final scene of Intervention. The Body also needs to be mentioned. It was a great episode but I think I need to watch it again to appreciate it more, because I was just so thrown off the whole time I was watching it I couldn’t get into it. I just kept thinking that this couldn’t be happening, and Buffy wearing red had to mean something because Glory always wears red, and where is all the damn music? But I get that it was an amazing episode. But I think Hush is still my favorite of all time.

I also really liked the bits of Slayer history we got throughout the season, particularly with the episode Fool For Love, which also detailed Spike’s history. And of course the finale was amazing. I loved the whole “death is your gift” bit. I also loved the little hints we got of what was going to have to happen in the end, but even when it happened and we kinda knew it was gonna happen, it was still a beautiful scene. I loved the slow motion running, jump and voiceover. It was perfection. Now onto season 6 and I’ll finally get to see Once More With Feeling!

I’m still at season one. Perhaps, now that I am caught up with Supernatural, I’ll start watching this again.

For Puck fans: I discovered that Mark Salling’s solo project Jericho released an album last year. I downloaded it from iTunes this weekend and am enjoying it.

Spike is hot. Umm, that pretty much sums up my contribution to this topic. I did watch the movie the other night though. Point for me.

Thanks Ryan, will have to check it out.

Sorry, Craiggers, as usual I got nothing when it comes to cultural refereneces. HOWEVER, I WILL be able to discuss V come Wednesday morning. I hope that’s gonna be something we can discuss together. In addition to our only other topic on TV: Torchwood. Oh, and I hear the Doctor Who show is pretty spiffy. :)

    HUGS…

It just makes me want to see Buffy again but I say that all the time Craig posts about Buffy. If I didnt have about a dozen other shows I’m trying to watch, I would rewatch it.

Dawn becomes a lot less annoying as it goes on. I cant help but like anything Michelle Trachtenberg does since she played Nona Mecklenberg in The Adventures of Pete & Pete

When Giles takes care of Ben at the end – I almost applauded.

I never watched Buffy regularly, but every time I caught an episode I loved it; except for Dawn, I couldn’t stand her. If I have my Buffy timeline correct, she becomes a needy, whiny, bitch next season.

Polt: I am so excited for Tuesday! I have my fingers crossed that they don’t screw it up!

  7. M. Nicodemus on November 2, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Ryan: Oh, and the kids only got one apple each, and no toothbrushes this year, which is kinda a bummer; now what am I gonna do with all this damn Charmin?

You don’t have to caaaall, anymooore. I won’t pick up da phone.

Overall, I think season five was my favorite complete season. The entire arc was just built so well. Excellent story telling. I particularly liked Checkpoint when Buffy realizes she has the power over the Watcher’s Council. *sniff* My little girl’s all grows up.

    “Twitter killed the Blogosphere Star”

    Obscure MTV reference.

Tam: There are multiple bands who call themselves Jericho. Mark Salling’s album is called Smoke Signals, which you can preview on his website.

  12. Tam on November 2, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Thanks Ryan. I’ll do it at home. I did get introduced to some Australian artists today by an Aussie writer I know. Paul Kelly, PJ Harvey (British), Missy Higgins and Travis (a video with a bazillion pregnant women in it – odd).

Nico: Just squeeze it and enjoy.

  13. The Ryan with the Cupcake on November 2, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Tam: The only Australian artists I know are Anthony Callea and Human Nature.

  14. Tam on November 2, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Ryan: What about Kylie Minogue. :-) She’s really not my thing though. INXS? Men at Work? Midnight Oil? AC/DC? Olivia Newton John? The Bee Gees? Damn. I knew more than I thought.

  15. M. Nicodemus on November 2, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Tam: *Looking through my high school music collection* INXS, check, Men at Work, check, Midnight Oil, check, AC/DC, double check, ONJ, check, Bee Gees, check. *sigh,* no wonder I was accused of sending “mixed signals” in high school. :)

YAY! I love Season 5! “The Body” made me cry more than the Precious trailer. Season 6 is amazing too! I can’t wait til you see “Once More, With Feeling,” my favorite episode of the series. It’s so funny, and actually has really good music.

  17. GoKitty on November 2, 2009 at 3:02 pm

I must be the only person who didnt like “Once More With Feeling”.

  18. john on November 2, 2009 at 3:16 pm

GoKitty: No you are not. I don’t get the appeal. “Hush” and “The Body” are the standout episodes for me.

    DON’T SQUEEZE THE CHARMIN!

  20. Tiga on November 2, 2009 at 5:05 pm

This is my reality but for you its still called luxury

  21. Dave S. on November 2, 2009 at 5:17 pm

Once More With Feeling really *is* brilliant television, right up there with the “Atomic Shakespeare” episode of Moonlighting. Awesome.

I was thrown off with season 5 a bit, which was the beginning of the end of me watching the series regularly. I *so* disliked Dawn that it was just starting to be a drain around midseason. And as much as I liked Riley, I wasn’t thrilled with his character this go-round. Sounds like I should’ve stuck with it. :(

  22. Dave S. on November 2, 2009 at 5:18 pm

    Mark: LOL ;)

  23. josh on November 2, 2009 at 5:36 pm

There’s nuffin’ but penniez in mah pocket. Nuffin’ but faith to keep me warm.

  24. The Ryan with the Cupcake on November 2, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Tam: I was thinking of Australian artists without a major U.S. presence.

  25. Michelle M. on November 2, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Harmony was great – I’d forgotten about her. Like GoKitty I would watch Buffy all over again, except I’m watching 5 million other shows.

Tam – Team Spike! and I heart Olivia Newton John.

josh – those aren’t pennies in your pocket, they’re BUTTONS!

  26. Polt on November 2, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Travis is an Australian group? I thought they were British. Hmm…

    HUGS…

  27. Dave S. on November 2, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Let’s not forget Ben Lee — best Australian singer/songwriter *ever*. :)

  28. Tiga on November 2, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Yeah, i thought Travis was scottish.

  29. Tam on November 2, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Polt: Could be, they have an accent, what do I know. :-) I didn’t check on them, still, way too many pregnant women in that video.

  30. Polt on November 2, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Tam: I’ve not seen any of their videos, but I do have one of their albums, which is pretty good.

Favorite line from that season that still gets use in my life from here and there (like last night for example):

Glory: You hit me! What, are you crazy?

  32. Joe G. on November 3, 2009 at 6:20 am

I loved the Glory character as a villain. I think it had to do with the fact that she was sort of the first main female baddie. I mean Faith was a half committed baddie who just happened to like being bad more than good. Dr. Walsh was just a pawn for the set up of the real baddie. Drusilla was just crazy. Glory was just it and the fact that she wasn’t overall monstery had something to do with it as well. I also liked how she was joined with Ben, which kinda gave her a human side. Dawn is just dumb and annoying. I hope you like Season 6 bc it ranks as one of my top two favorite seasons!

  33. Mark on November 3, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I Love Me Some Dave S.!!

Josh: Where’s the video of you driving and singing In My Pocket?? If there isn’t one, there should be!

  34. BCSM on November 4, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Just started reading your blog. I’m a huge Buffy fan. Seriously, the whole series is actually better the second time you watch it. After you’re done with all seasons, take a few years off and watch them again. Stick with season 6, it’s not the best. Season 7 is awesome.
