What I Did This Weekend

2012Header
Let’s see. First I saw 2012 with my cousins Michelle and Nicolle and my Dad. It was good, not great. The special effects were amazing though. The story (what story?) was lacking and the characters were all punch you in the face “Like this guy!” “Hate this guy!” caricatures. The destruction of Los Angeles and Yellowstone were amazing action sequences though. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen action on that scale before. It was worth the price of admission. Oh, and Michelle got me the first season of Smallville for my birthday. I’ve always wanted to watch it, but never had the chance but I do now! (After Buffy (and maybe Supernatural) of course!)

Then I watched some more Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which included the amazing Once More with Feeling episode, that I’ve been hearing about for 6 seasons, and yes, it was just as amazing as everyone told me it would be. I need the soundtrack immediately! All of the songs were amazing, but the bit that stands out the most to me was Anya’s rock breakaway about bunnies. Pure awesome! Then I got dinner with my friend Jim at this Japanese restaurant, which was really good. Then I met some other friends at this bar around me by called the Bunk House. It’s just a local bar. People like to make fun of it and call it the Skank House, or the Skunk House, but everyone still goes, which says something. It’s fun though.

Then Sunday my parents and Amanda went to Pennsylvania so I slept in and caught up with my good friend the DVR. In one sitting (well, kinda still lounging scantily clad in bed) I watched The Office (better!), 30 Rock (awesome!), America’s Next Top Model (finally!), Desperate Housewives (really good this season!), and 90210 (is Annie on a different show than everyone? not that I’m complaining!). Then I dragged my ass out of bed and…brought it downstairs to the den where I watched the first Kill Bill. I hadn’t seen it since I saw it in the theater and it’s so good!

Okay, so then I actually had to get dressed to go to Meg and Rachel’s book signing for The Happy Book! It was so happy! Even before I got there! Because along the way I found this amazingness:

TurkeyCostume

Yes, it’s a turkey costume, and yes, it’s the most amazing thing you’ll see all day. Then I was at the signing and Meg and Rachel were giving a talk, and when asked what made him happy, a little boy in the audience said underwear. It was adorable. The event was great. Rachel’s Mom made cupcakes! And yeah, we’re all excited about the book, but cupcakes! Mmmmm…

BookSigning

And then I went home and Mom and Dad brought back a present for me from John and Barbara in Pennsylvania and it was this awesome argyle t-shirt:

ArgyleTShirt

Then I spent the rest of the night catching up on blogs, including this amazing post over at Hotel Tuesday where I of course leave a comment and where I of course get yelled at even though I tell Enrico all the time that I would comment more if he would use the popout window comments instead of the darn embedded comment template than prevents me from commenting at work. But what can I say, his are a fiery people and they yell a lot. But my friendship with him is worth it. (I’m thinking if I say something sweet, he’ll feel bad about yelling at me all the time.) So that was my weekend!

I watched the first four seasons of Smallville. I really dug it at the time. I ended up missing the season five premiere and never caught up… It did seem kinda dragged out.

I have to catch up on LAST season of Desperate Housewives, but I wasn’t happy about the jump. I hear it works out though.

YAY! Once More, With Feeling! SOOO good. Told you. The standout moment for me was “Walk Through the Fire.” It was so dramatic and came at the perfect time, right before the confrontation. And I love the lyrics. Especially Buffy’s parts (“Why can’t I feel? My skin should crack and peel. I want the fire back”). I also love the clever line but “She came from the grave much graver” and the bridge when they are all singing over each other. And the throwback to “Going Through the Motions”?! So cool. Love it. And of course “I think this line’s mostly filler” is gold.

Congrats on being on the cover of a famous book! Do you get royalties now?!

AND I WAS NOT YELLING AT YOU >:O
How does thanking you for stopping by = yelling at you!?!?!?

  • By Polt, November 16, 2009 @ 8:47 am

I see you liked 2012 more than I did, but that’s okay, you’re still adorable anyway.

I saw Smallville season 1 as it showed on TV. Not too bad. I got away from it somewhere before he left for college and never got back into it.

Argyle t-shirt is totally awesomeness. Turkey costume kinda freaks me out…espeically this time of year.

    Yay for a fun weekend!

    HUGS…

  • By Craig, November 16, 2009 @ 8:50 am

Yes! “I think this line’s mostly filler” was genius! And “Walk Though the Fire” was really great too. I can imagine that being a great ipod song while I walk to work.

I also liked when she saved the guy in the beginning who looked like he came right off of a romance novel cover.

I also really liked the way this episode was important to the season arc. Joss does a great job at making the gimmicky episodes like Hush, The Body, and Once More With Feeling, still extremely relevant to what’s going on, rather than just having a throwaway episode where they do things differently.

  • By Enrico, November 16, 2009 @ 9:07 am

YES! I agree. I hate/despise when people say that the musical was good but wasn’t important to the season arc. Ugh. Some people are so dumb. Even if the bad guy was random, the final scene is pretty important to the series!

And I like the romance novel guy for the line: “How can I repay–” “Whatever.”

  • By jere, November 16, 2009 @ 9:17 am

The turkey costume could easily become a scary alien costume if you painted in green and gave it a reptilian texture.

Enrico yells at me all the time to fix my music tags and to stop saying nice things about Adam Lambert and to leave Britney Spears alone. I thought about mentioning the new Lady Gaga video on twitter yesterday, but I’m not sure I’m emotionally strong enough right now to deal his rage.

  • By Tam, November 16, 2009 @ 9:21 am

Speaking of Argyle, I saw THIS on CakeWrecks on the weekend and thought you should have had it for your birthday (even if your name isn’t Aylwin – what the hell kind of name is that anyway?).

We watched Monsters vs Aliens, it was cute. Went for Thai food, got some more holes in my head and that’s about it. A lazy weekend which was kind of nice. No Buffy but I watched Bones which is two degrees of separation from it with David Boreanz.

  • By Vic, November 16, 2009 @ 9:26 am

What is is about that embedded comment thing and work? It’s like they’re conspiring against us.

  • By josh, November 16, 2009 @ 9:50 am

“It was good, not great.” You say that about every movie it seemz like. :)

I’m glad it was destructively euphoric. Fuck the character’s and the plot and their lives. As long as millionz of people drown/get meteor-crushes/burned to death/etc… I’m a happy camper!

  • By Craig, November 16, 2009 @ 10:30 am

Josh, I usually say that when I hook up too.

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 10:59 am

Craig: That shirt looks good on you. Your parents have good taste.

Josh: You are now my first choice as sidekick if I ever become a mad scientist. We can perform colony drops together.

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 11:07 am

Now that I’ve caught up with Supernatural and finished Death Note, I’ve started watching Buffy – Season 1 again.

  • By Craig, November 16, 2009 @ 11:12 am

Ryan: Thanks! Not my parents though. My brother and sister in law. My parents just brought it back with them.

  • By M. Nicodemus, November 16, 2009 @ 11:21 am

Glad you had a fun weekend! That shirt really does suit you, but the turkey man was a little creepy, although, I would not have been able to resist the urge to say; “I was the turkey all along. I was the turkey; MEEEEEEE!” over and over again. All day. Until the Mrs beat me unconcious.

Ryan: when you an Josh get the volcano hideout set up you MUST invite me to the house warming party. I will bring you a shark with a freakin’ laser attached to his head as a gift :)

  • By Tam, November 16, 2009 @ 11:25 am

Nico: Funny, very funny. I should watch that movie again.

Ryan: Will you guys have costumes or matching outfits or something?

  • By M. Nicodemus, November 16, 2009 @ 11:28 am

Oh, and I watch Smallville whenever a new season comes out on DVD. I like the series and it is always fun to see how they change the DC mythos to make things more palatable for the TV audience, as well as the little nods they give to the comic geeks who dissect all the minute details of each episode. Hope you enjoy it!

  • By Bradford, November 16, 2009 @ 11:39 am

I’ve been incredibly torn by 30 Rock this season. I feel like some of the jokes are starting to be recycled, and not in a funny way. That said, some times that show still makes me fall on the ground laughing.

Parks and Recreation has really started to hit its stride, though. You watch that at all?

  • By Craig, November 16, 2009 @ 11:57 am

Parks and Recreation was genius this week. “Murinal” had me hysterical laughing!

  • By Polt, November 16, 2009 @ 12:14 pm

“Josh, I usually say that when I hook up too.” Perhaps you’re not doing it right? :) Or maybe you’re just hooking up with Hollywood cliches who have no character development or plot to back them up? Course, I imagine feeling like the earth was crumbling underneath your feet during a hookup would be good thing, no?

    HUGS…

  • By josh, November 16, 2009 @ 12:16 pm

Craig: Hasn’t Kelly taught you anyting?! DO NOT HOOK UP (up)!!!

Ryan: I alwayz wanted to be the comically demented sidekick of an evil villain that learns too late how to right his wayz and is killed off in a spectacularly heroic act of bravery against his superior in order to save the hero y heroine.

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 12:26 pm

josh: Sadly, I believe hiring you now violates at least one of the items on the Evil Overlord List.

  • By Craig, November 16, 2009 @ 12:29 pm

Well clearly I only hook up with people I’m madly in love with and have gone out on 50 dates first.

  • By Tam, November 16, 2009 @ 1:12 pm

I love that list Ryan. More screenwriters should use it as a reference.

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 1:41 pm

Tam: Either a dress code or a uniform. Costumes look silly.

  • By josh, November 16, 2009 @ 1:59 pm

Ryan: Ug…yet ANOTHER jerb that refuses to hire me.

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 3:21 pm

josh: I guess I could just rely on #71:

If I decide to test a lieutenant’s loyalty and see if he/she should be made a trusted lieutenant, I will have a crack squad of marksmen standing by in case the answer is no.

  • By Craig, November 16, 2009 @ 3:27 pm

Finally finished the list. Those are awesome! I think my favorite is:

“81. If I am fighting with the hero atop a moving platform, have disarmed him, and am about to finish him off and he glances behind me and drops flat, I too will drop flat instead of quizzically turning around to find out what he saw.”

  • By M. Nicodemus, November 16, 2009 @ 4:22 pm

    My fav:

    56. My Legions of Terror will be trained in basic marksmanship. Any who cannot learn to hit a man-sized target at 10 meters will be used for target practice.

  • By josh, November 16, 2009 @ 4:26 pm

Ryan: How about this…even though I will ultimately betray your trust in favor of martyrdom in the name of saving your sworn enemy, I CAN however clear the entire “Legends of the Hidden Temple” obstacle course in under a minute & 30 secondz. Impressive, right? The Shrine of the Silver Monkey ain’t got shit on Speedy Gonzales ass!

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 4:29 pm

I’m going to hire Michelle M. for #21:

I will hire a talented fashion designer to create original uniforms for my Legions of Terror, as opposed to some cheap knock-offs that make them look like Nazi stormtroopers, Roman footsoldiers, or savage Mongol hordes. All were eventually defeated and I want my troops to have a more positive mind-set.

#42 seems to imply that Enrico and Richard Parker may be the heros:

When I capture the hero, I will make sure I also get his dog, monkey, ferret, or whatever sickeningly cute little animal capable of untying ropes and filching keys happens to follow him around.

  • By john, November 16, 2009 @ 4:38 pm

I’ll have to read the list later at home, but Cupcake: what did you think of Death Note?!?

  • By Mel, November 16, 2009 @ 5:15 pm

Wait. You had the house to yourself and porn in the living room didn’t enter the picture?

The shirt, of course, is very you. And adorable, though I suppose that’s redundant of me.

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 5:39 pm

john: I enjoyed it. I’ve actually wondered how much supernatural you can get away with before the authorities catch on.

Because my office was weirdly cool today, I opened the west facing window and positioned my chair so I could read in the sun. Now I need a hammock that follows the sun.

  • By M. Nicodemus, November 16, 2009 @ 5:43 pm

Cupcake: Did you watch the live action movies as well? If so, were they any good?

  • By The Ryan with the Cupcake, November 16, 2009 @ 5:57 pm

Nico: I only watched the ones on Hulu.

  • By john, November 16, 2009 @ 7:46 pm

Cupcake and M.Nico: I LOVED the anime, I thought it was amazing. I’ve seen the movies, they showed them at a local theater. They were OK. The effects were interesting, but they are different from the anime and manga.

  • By Michelle M., November 16, 2009 @ 7:55 pm

Craig, you look great in that t shirt. I think 90210 is much better this season – with the ice cream and surfing and fun. I was hoping Annie would continue on a downward spiral of ostracism, sex, booze and drugs and either 1) become a first class bitch. Or 2) overdose. Either of these would be an improvement. She bugs.

Ryan, I will take you up on #21. And bring #29 into it (design cheerful clothing to throw off your enemies). Maybe an argyle print?

  • By Chris D., November 16, 2009 @ 10:33 pm

Be careful Craig, one of your blog readers might just go and sew you a Turkey costume. ;) [No, not me, I think that one is over my head].

One day maybe they will have a bunk named after you at the bunkhouse!

I am glad to hear that you had a good time at the book signing and I like your new shirt.

  • By Oz, November 17, 2009 @ 12:29 am

I enjoyed the first season of Smallville, but stopped watching after that. Every bit I’ve seen since then has been more and more ridiculous and painful to watch.

I’m assuming 2012 was just another The Day After Tomorrow? I don’t mind shitty plot with my disaster porn.

  • By Bart, November 17, 2009 @ 12:41 am

I had totally forgotten about that episode! I remember it — there was a beautiful song between Willow and Tara in that episode, right?
