House of Night: Hunted – Review

So I finished Hunted, the fifth book in the House of Night series about a vampire boarding school. I have to say, this was the most disappointing entry of the series. Not that it was terrible by any means, just not nearly as good as the others. I feel like it really did nothing to drive the overall plot forward. They escaped at the end of the last book, then in this one they go back, then escape again. There was another confrontation with the major bad guy of the series, but it wasn’t enough to sustain the entire book. That plot could have been condensed and added onto the previous one. Plus, the main group stayed hidden for the first 150 pages or so, which was not a very interesting read, as it didn’t do much to drive the plot forward.

That’s a review from 50,000 feet. From a more ground level view, the book had everything I love about the series: fun characters and snappy dialogue. The Twins didn’t bother me nearly as much as they usually do, which I think has to do with them finally accepting Aphrodite into the group. And Jack Twist’s (I shit you not, that’s his name) has become so overly gay that it’s more of a joke, rather than something worth being offended by, which totally works, and I think that’s what they were aiming for all along, but just didn’t get quite right until now. And yeah, the last 100 pages were a lot better than the rest of the book when they finally got things going. So overall it was still fun, just extremely slow-starting and maybe even an unnecessary entry into the series.

Now I’m gonna start reading some of the graphic novels I got for Christmas, starting with Batman: Hush.

oooo, graphic novels. Hush isn’t the best, but its interesting. “The Long Halloween”, “The Killing Joke”, “Batman: Year One”, “The Dark Knight Returns” & “Gotham Underground” are better. Hush is good reading though. ENJOY!

But it’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insa-a-a-ane…

Sorry, certain bloggy friends have taught me that whenever I don’t know what to say in a comment I should just quote whatever random song lyrics are in my head.

Jere, you’re absolutely right. Unfortunately, I’m sorry to say, the lyrics that are stuck in my head right now are “Paaardonn Meeeeeeeeeee” and I’m mighty annoyed about it, let me tell you. Orange faces. Press-on nails. Out-of-key singing.

I haven’t read a graphic novel in simply æons and æons.

I agree with you on this installment of the series. I finished the Tempted a few weeks ago. I don’t want to spoil anything, so no comment yet. It bugs me that everyone thinks Damien has such a brilliant vocabulary. The words he defines for them seem like fairly ordinary words. Zoe is boring. Bella Boring. Too bad Aphrodite isn’t the main character.

    Good god. A topical comment.

By the way, Craig. You have to write a new LOST post. We have to discuss last night’s episode!!!!

No you don’t. Don’t let Justin pressure into writing another Lost post. It’s okay… you can stop watching if you want to… ;)

That’s right, Craig. Let Jere scare you away from writing another LOST post. Jere’s been working out. He could probably hurt you. It’s best not to get him angry ;-)

Speaking of LOST, I’ve been without internet for a while. How many episodes have there been?

  10. Justin on February 12, 2010 at 11:42 am

Kári, it kind of depends on how you want to count things. So far there have been:

    (1) A one-hour re-cap episode that covers the entire first 5 seasons quite efficiently. NOT to be seen by people who have never watched LOST, as it is full of spoilerage, but useful for people who would like to be reminded of what they did see.

    (2) A two-hour season premiere, which on reruns and on the DVD will probably show up as two separate episodes.

    (3) A second (or third) episode (depending on how you count).

So. 1 hour of recap, 3 hours so far of episodeage, where the first two hours is either countable as episode 1, or as episodes 1 and 2 together. Next Tuesday will be the third (fourth) new episode.

Does that leave you thoroughly confused?

And so far, I’m loving it. This last episode was very cool on many levels.
