Amanda and some of her friends are going to see Glee Live at Radio City Music Hall when it’s in town. I’ve been questioning my decision not to go, but after seeing the audience during their appearance on Oprah, I’m pretty sure I would shoot someone in the face if I had to sit with people like them for two hours. So in the end, I’m okay with my decision not to go. Besides, who do these people think they are? Don’t they know that I’m the biggest Glee fan around? And they’re making us look bad.

We’re going to see Wicked on Broadway this Sunday. I’ve never seen it, but the episode of Glee where Rachel and Kurt sing Defying Gravity (it’s my favorite song on the Glee soundtrack and generally gets two additional replays when I’m driving in the car) was enough to make us buy tickets immediately. I don’t know too much about the show, just that it takes place before The Wizard of Oz and it’s won a bajillion awards, so I’m pretty excited.

In high school, I hated that all the theater options were always restricted to musicals. I thought it would be fun to give acting a try, but my singing abilities are nonexistent so I was pretty much screwed. I did play in the pit orchestra for a Gershwin musical though, and that was fun. There’s something oddly enjoyable about being crammed into a tiny pit with a bunch of your friends during late night rehearsals. Maybe it’s because you get to play around and drink soup out of thermoses while the cool kids (cool within the music department geeks anyway) actors on stage got yelled at. Yeah, that’s it.

  1. I was at a party recently that was filled with Gleeks who kept “Defying Gravity” on repeat for so long (Hours!) that a friend and I choreographed an interpretive dance to it. I may have been durnk.

    Enjoy the show :-) *smooches*

Huh, I just posted the Kurt version of Defying Gravity yesterday. Oooooh. Twilight Zone.

We saw Wicked when it came to town here. Probably not quite the same quality as Broadway but it was fun anyway. I would be afraid of the weirdos at a Glee concert, there’s enjoying it and “enjoying” it, as in peeing your pants happy.

We never had a drama club in high school. We spent out late nights crammed in cars with our friends at the drive-in drinking.

“Wicked” is a fun show. Some of the songs are great (“Popular” and “Defying Gravity”) while others are a little weak (“Bad”), but overall, it is a fun show. “Defying Gravity” is arranged differently in the show and I prefer the original, but do like Kurt and Rachel’s rendition as well.

And yeah, I think you made the right decision. I couldn’t handle that level of fandom for two hours.

  4. I’d love to see Wicked sometime. In high school, I worked backstage, moving sets, handing props to actors before they went on, opening the curtain, that sorta stuff. never got to be the guy helping the actors change thier costumes, though, dammit.

I did try out for ONE part. It in West Side Story, and since I can’t sing or dance to save my life, I auditioned for the part of Officer Krupkey, the only non-singing part in it. And during West Side Story, I was backstage moving sets. *SIGH*

I was in band and really enjoyed sitting in the pit and not being screamed at. Except for that one year that there was some sort of feud or something and the drama and chorus teachers decided to do “Peanuts” with piano only and fuck the band over. Which was still fine, since we didn’t get yelled at and have scripts thrown at us.

  6. Oh Wicked, my favorite musical behind Phantom and Rent … so good, oh so very good, I really hope you enjoy it sir, I personally love it.

As for Glee, meh, I don’t want to see them live, I want to enjoy the music on the show and watch it intertwine with crazy plots, you know because I *heart* crazy plots.

  7. I’m happy Glee will return in time to fill the void Ugly Betty will leave.

“There’s something oddly enjoyable about being crammed into a tiny pit with a bunch of your friends during late night rehearsals.”

I’m paralyzed by the number of possibilities provided by this sentence.

  8. Cupcake: Yeah, it took everything I had, but I resisted the temptation to comment on that sentence as well. :)

    HUGS…

All of my friends were girls, and even though I loved them, they were the last people I would want to be crammed into a tiny pit with.

I will be interested to read your review of Wicked…..

  13. I too will be interested to read about your impressions of Wicked. I saw it about 7 billion years ago with the original cast.

  14. There is a huge Wicked production here in London that I keep talking about going to but haven’t yet. Sometime soon though. And I love Defying Gravity and I love Glee!

  15. I LOVE Defying Gravity. Now I feel like I need to listen. I think you might regret not seeing Glee with us. You will probably not regret seeing me do my happy leprechaun dance upon the start of the show!
