Toy Story 3 – Review

So I saw Toy Story 3 over the weekend. I don’t really remember the first one very much, other than the fact that I loved it. I’m a bit more familiar with the second one as I’ve seen it more recently, and I’m pretty sure I liked that one even better. Sigh. When Somebody Loved Me gets me every time! So this review won’t do a very good job at comparing the new one to the others, but I can tell you how wonderful the new one was.

First off the animation was incredible. It’s amazing how great they’ve gotten their movements downright perfect. Every time (still?) Woody runs, I crack up because it is just flailingly wonderful. There’s also a moment involving Woody and toilet paper, which is just hysterical. I really enjoyed the new toys, especially every second Ken was on screen. I also liked Bonnie’s toys and wish we could have spent a bit more time with them, but I guess it’s better they didn’t shoehorn too many new toys into it and ruin the flow of the movie.

As for the story, there wasn’t too much you don’t already know from the commercials, and plotwise the movie did seem a little short, but they definitely came up with a wonderful and poignant story to tell. It was a story that made me want to drag down my Power Ranger toys from the attic and have an Avatar style battle of the universe in my basement. And don’t even get me started on the last ten minutes which had me bawling my eyes out shedding big manly tears, squeezed from the balls of Chuck Norris.

Like I said, it’s hard to compare this one to the others, but if I had to say, I’d say I still like the second one the best. I’ll have to watch the first one again and come up with a definitive order. Have you guys seen the way Entertainment Weekly ranked all the Pixar movies? Awful! They clearly put the first Toy Story up top for sentimental reasons. Nonsense! And how did Cars get above Toy Story 2 and Monster Inc.? Cars is the worst and Monsters Inc. was my favorite for the longest time! And Wall-E is only number 3? Ridiculous! That one is the best! Ratatouille is the only Pixar movie I haven’t seen, so I can’t really speak for that one. And poor A Bug’s Life. So disrespected.

I haven’t seen it yet. However, I did see Ratatouille on Netflix Instant Play. It was a fun movie. You should check to see if it’s still there.

I was never really a fan of Toy Story. It was okay but kind of meh. I’ve never seen Cars or Up. I think Monsters Inc was my fave of those. Wall-E didn’t do it for me either. Hmmm. Didn’t hate it but didn’t think it was all that. We own most of them though except Toy Story as that wasn’t my kids’ fave either.

Did you see it in 3-D or just normal?

I have seen every Pixar movie three bajillion and twelve times, except for Up, for some reason I have not seen that one the whole way through yet. I am taking all the kidlets to see Toy Story 3 this weekend in the “big city” where big city equals “you can’t see the south edge of town while standing on the north edge”

Wall-E was one of my favorites, I really didn’t like Cars at first, but it grew on me after watching it three bajillion and twelve/2 times.

Cars above Ratatouille? The Incredibles at #2?

It’s time to rewrite that article. No 3-D effects required.

I saw the 3D version. It added nice depth, but nothing was really popping out at you. I’d say you can save your money and go with the regular version if you’d like.

Is “The Incredibles” Pixar? If so, that should be #1. If it’s not, then I’m with Tam, “Monsters, Inc.” should have been #1.

I’ll probably wait to get Toy Story 3 on Netflix, though.

    HUGS…

Yeah The Incredibles is Pixar. It’s one of my favorites too.

  8. Craig on June 21, 2010 at 2:24 pm

It took me a while to love The Incredibles since it was so different from the other Pixar movies, but my adoration of it came in time.

How can you have not seen Ratatouille? Cars sucked. If I wanted to watch Doc Hollywood, I would have watched Doc Hollywood.

The Incredibles, Monsters Inc. and Ratatouille are my top three.

I agree with you that the first Toy Story movie probably got #1 for sentimental reasons but I still really like it . I would rate it just behind Toy Story 2 and the Incredibles in that order. I did not think much of Monsters Inc. (com’on children’s screams and laughter = energy?!! ) or RATATOUILLE (the rat controls the chef’s every movement by sitting under his hat and pulling his hair?!!!) And I also hate the way A Bug’s Life gets no respect because I still really like it. And WALL-E was just plain terrible. I have’t seen UP yet so I can’t judge. I did not mind CARS… It was pretty predictable but okay… probably be somewhere in the middle of my list.

Monster’s Inc. is fabulous. I’ve never seen any of the Toy Story moviesor Ratatouille. Cars was okay. As a NC girl, it’s hard to escape the dreaded NASCAR.

Up was my favorite. The kid was adorable and I’m all for a movie that gives me a big lump in my throat from trying not to cry.
Ratatouille was probably good. I don’t know, I fell asleep about 20 minutes into it.

I think I’m going to stop posting about Pixar films. What incredible lines they draw. Pixar hasn’t done a bad film. I’ve loved everything and think Cars was probably their weakest yet still better than 90% of what Hollywood is releasing.

You have to see Ratatouille. Was easily my favorite movie that year and it certainly in my Top 3 Pixar films with The Incredibles and Up. BTW, Brad Bird directed both The Incredibles and Ratatouille, so if you’re a fan of his, you owe it to yourself to see his third animated film. I’m a little saddened to see him doing Mission: Impossible 4, but he obviously wants to go into live action directing.

Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles are probably my favorites. The Toy Story Movies are way up there for me too. I also really loved Wall-E and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Monsters vs. Aliens as well (though I don’t know if that is pixar).

I haven’t seen Up yet, though I want to.

For 3D movies (other than Avatar), the best I’ve ever seen was Coraline. It was a sheer joy to watch.

I haven’t seen Rataouille yet — is it really that good? I wasn’t very drawn to it from the commercials. For some reason, though, this makes me think of The Incredible Mr Fox, which was unbelievably awesome.

I LOVED “Toy Story 3″! AMAZING! The Big Baby terrified me and then broke my heart at the end!

And I didn’t like “Wall-E.” Fell asleep. Blah blah…I get it…everyone’s gonna be lazy fat bungholez in the future…snore…

  16. Justin on June 24, 2010 at 8:34 am

You should have stayed awake to the end of Wall-E to see what happens with the bungholez!

    I haven’t seen Toy Story 3 yet.

Yay! Josh and I loved Toy Story 3. I cried for the entire last half hour of the film.

  18. M. Nicodemus on June 28, 2010 at 12:21 am

Ok, I just watched this today and seriously, what was up with that? I spent the last half hour crying like a fat kid whose birthday cake fell on the floor purging my weaknesses by washing them out with manly tears of toughness. Yup, I absolutely did NOT drench my sleeve with un-manly blubbering. Rrrriiigghht.

But seriously, there were a couple of pretty dark moments that had a couple of the SoN really scared. SoN-2 actually said that he didn’t want to buy the movie because it was too scary. Also, now SoN-3 refuses to throw out ANYTHING that might end up at the dump. Way to go Pixar, you just turned my kid into a trash hoarding loon, thanks.

I saw this movie this past weekend and I personally think it is the best of the three. I was astonished that they managed to still come up with fresh and original ideas, and I just loved every moment of it. I laughed through the whole thing until the end, where I, too, bawled my eyes out (and so did my friend Sheryl, who went with me).
