Star Trek Cast Members Talk About Galaxy Quest

As I was working diligently, I came across these quotes of Star Trek cast members’ reactions to the movie Galaxy Quest that I thought I’d share. Patrick Stewart’s is obviously the best:

“I had originally not wanted to see Galaxy Quest because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said “You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre”. And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans.” – Patrick Stewart

“I thought it was very funny, and I thought the audience that they portrayed was totally real, but the actors that they were pretending to be were totally unrecognizable. Certainly I don’t know what Tim Allen was doing. He seemed to be the head of a group of actors and for the life of me I was trying to understand who he was imitating. The only one I recognized was the girl playing Nichelle Nichols.” – William Shatner

“I loved Galaxy Quest. I thought it was brilliant satire, not only of Trek, but of fandom in general. The only thing I wish they had done was cast me in it, and have me play a freaky fanboy who keeps screaming at the actor who played “the kid” about how awful it was that there was a kid on the spaceship. Alas.” – Wil Wheaton

“I think it’s a chillingly realistic documentary [laughs]. The details in it, I recognized every one of them. It is a powerful piece of documentary filmmaking. And I do believe that when we get kidnapped by aliens, it’s going to be the genuine, true Star Trek fans who will save the day. I was rolling in the aisles. And Tim Allen had that Shatner-esque swagger down pat. And I roared when the shirt came off, and Sigourney rolls her eyes and says, ‘There goes that shirt again.’ How often did we hear that on the set? [laughs]” – George Takei

Brilliant. I have to say I’ve never seen that movie. I’ll have to check it out.

I fucking love “Galaxy Quest”. First saw it in the theater at a matinee showing with friends and we roared. I even got David to watch it, and he enjoyed it despite his hatred of Tim Allen (b/c Allen takes his shirt off in every single movie he’s in).

It’s also the movie that spawned my lust for both Sam Rockwell and Justin Long. Seriously, is there any slash fic out there involving the two of them?

That movie was fantastic! Sam Rockwell and Tony Shaloub were totally fantastic, as were the rest of the cast. Tam, you *must see this movie.

  4. I didn’t see it in a theater, but I did laugh when i saw it on DVD. Good flick.

    HUGS…

That movie was a little gem. I was really surprised it wasn’t a bigger hit. Those are some fun quotes – thanks for sharing them.

I loved this movie, and one of my favorite exchanges was this scene:
Brandon’s Mom: Where are you going with those fireworks?
Brandon: Well, the Protector got super-accelerated coming out of the black hole, and it, like, nailed the atmosphere at Mach 15, which, you guys know, is pretty unstable, obviously, so we’re gonna help Laredo guide it on the vox ultra-frequency carrier and use Roman candles for visual confirmation.
Brandon’s Mom: Uh, all right, dinner’s at seven.

  7. I **adore** this movie!!!!! Lisa and I saw it in the cinema and have it on both VHS and DVD and have watched it more than once.

It gets everything about scifi movies, fan culture, and everything. And it has its cake and eats it to in a sweet and non-mean-spirited way: by which I mean, it’s a spoof and a massive dig at this kind of genre and at the kind of fans who obsess over them, but at the same time it’s a love ode to both and it manages to *BE* a good movie of the genre in and of itself at the same time. It’s hard to pull off such affectionate satire!

Paul, that is a fun scene, but the movie is full of great exchanges and quotes. My favorite may be “Look! I have one job on this lousy ship, it’s *stupid*, but I’m gonna do it! Okay? ”

I’m with Mel on Sam Rockwell and Justin Long. Though Sam is much sexier in Frost/Nixon, and man is he aging well. He looks great in Moon. And I loved him as Zaphod in Hitchiker’s Guide. :)

    Hilarious post, Craig :)

Galaxy Quest is a classic! I totally loved it; one of my favorite lines:

Gwen DeMarco: What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn’t have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?
Jason Nesmith: ‘Cause it’s on the television show.
Gwen DeMarco: Well forget it! I’m not doing it! This episode was badly written!

B the W, I feel like I have been a bad Dancing Monkey lately, sorry for not commenting more! I hope I will have more time starting this week, if I can just keep the sky from falling…

  9. I’ve been a way worse dancing monkey than you lately, M.N. — I always post so late that everybdoy else is bored by the topic and doesn’t respond :P

“This episode was badly written” *IS* definitely the single best line of the movie :)

  10. I love that part, and I love “Look! I have one job on this lousy ship, it’s stupid, but I’m gonna do it!”

  11. *sigh* Craig, I know I’ve become a bad commenter, but you repeating a quote I just posted 3 comments up is making me very sad :(

  12. M. Nicodemus

Gwen DeMarco: Fred, you had a part people loved. I mean, my TV Guide interview was six paragraphs about my BOOBS and how they fit into my suit. No one bothered to ask me what I do on the show.
Fred Kwan: You were… the umm, wait a minute, I’ll think of it…
Gwen DeMarco: I repeated the computer, Fred.

Ha! Justin was right they really did do a great job of spoofing the genre in a non-mean spitted way. Seriously, can anyone tell me what Deanna Troy did of any significance durning the first season of TNG?

  13. M. Nicodemus

*sigh* during, of course I meant during *sigh*

  14. What she did of significance was make people want to toss her out an airlock every time she opened her mouth, I think.

  15. Justin, it’s not that you’re a bad commenter, it’s that you’re a loooooong commenter. I can’t be expected to read every word of them. :-P

  16. Hahaha by the standards I set for myself on this blog for comments that is one of the shortest I’ve ever posted :)

This film just gets better and better with age. It’s Doctor Who, Star Trek, Logan’s Run, and ET rolled into some of the best parodic humor ever written, directed with restraint. It’s not only sci-fi about sci-fi, it is indeed a documentary about film-making. It’s hard to believe that it’s now thirteen years old! Thanks for the post Craig.
