Hardwood Floor Progress

April 29, 2011
By

Well, work is progressing slowly smoothly. All of the plywood has been replaced and they’ve done all the hardwood in the master bedroom, most of the spare bedroom, and down some of the hall. Now they just need to finish the hall and do the living room. They said they’d finish today, I just hope it’s not another 9PM night. As promised, here are some pictures of the progress:

I love the color. I’m so glad I went with it. I was worried it wouldn’t be dark enough, but I think it’s perfect. And by a happy accident, it matches the really nice wooden blinds the old owners left behind in the windows perfectly.

Oh the Joys of Homeownership!

So the guys came to install the hardwood floors yesterday while I was at work. I asked my Dad to go let them in and then either sit in the car while they worked or see if it was okay if he left and came back. He had just gotten over a 24 hour stomach virus from the previous day, which I felt really bad about, but he shouldn’t have to do anything strenuous, so what could go wrong?

Everything.

After about an hour of work, the super came and put a stop to them saying that I didn’t have approval to do the work. I made a point of asking about approvals at my co-op board interview and they said I didn’t need any. But the super wasn’t going to let them work until I gave the property managers the worker’s insurance and license information. Twenty phone calls and two broken fax machines later I was able to get that resolved from work and the super let them continue around 1:30.

The salesman told me the night before that there might be a chance of having to replace the plywood underneath the laminates because the floor felt a bit squishy. Well lo and behold, there’s water damage on the plywood when they rip up the laminates, so all the plywood needs to be replaced. My Dad goes with them to Home Depot so he can pay for the plywood and their van breaks down.

I shit you not.

My Dad (who was sick with an awful stomach virus just the day before and was only supposed to have to sit in the car while they did their thing mind you) had to help push their van half a mile to the nearest gas station, then walk back to my place to get his car so he could pick up the guys, go to Home Depot and rent a truck to buy plywood and bring it back to my place. Can you frakking believe that?

By the time I got home from work around 6:30, they were still working, replacing the plywood throughout. They were making an awful ruckus with sawing and hammering, but I ran into the co-op board president and he said they can make as much noise as they need to until 10PM. Fshew! So they worked until 9PM finishing the plywood in the two bedrooms which included three closets. After they left, I went in and the floors feel extremely solid. Way better than they were before. I’m really happy with the work they’ve done so far. Unfortunately my iPhone ran out of juice so I wasn’t able to take pictures of the progress. I will be sure to do that tonight.

Now they need to replace the plywood in the hallway and living room, then lay the hardwood. I’m thinking the plywood won’t take much longer (hopefully) since the living room and halls are square with no closets. I’m told laying hardwood doesn’t take too long once you get the hang of it, and these guys are (mostly) professionals so if all the stars align they may be able to finish today, otherwise it’s likely they’ll finish tomorrow. They’re also replacing all the molding along the floors which is nice.

As stressful as my day was yesterday, trying to get the license and insurance business cleared up with the property managers and super while I was at work, at least I didn’t have to push a van a half a mile the day after I had a stomach virus. I can only imagine how my Dad must have felt. I feel so bad, but he was such a trooper and really gracious about the whole thing. I think I owe him about twenty dinners out after all this.

I’m a Homeowner!

April 27, 2011

I posted it on Facebook and Twitter, so why not here too?! I know Adam loves hearing about my co-op, so why not give him what he wants! Yay! So the closing went well. The morning of the closing I was waiting to hear from my lawyer on the amount I needed for the certified check. I finally get a call and it was $10,000 more than what I was expecting! I’m like “I don’t think that’s right.” So they go back to the bank and get another number, and what do you know, I was right! It was $10,000 less than what they first told me! Seriously, the people I’ve been working with have been less than stellar, but who cares, because it’s done now and I’m a homeowner! Hooray!

The place wasn’t all that clean when we got there. It didn’t look that bad when I did the final walkthrough, but when you own something you see all of it’s flaws in magnificent detail. So me, Mom, and Amanda spent the remainder of the day cleaning and taking out all the screws they left everywhere and removing some unnecessary shelves. Yes, I know I could have told them to do it, but I just wanted everything over with and didn’t want to delay the closing. It’s amazing what a little elbow grease can do! I’ll be sure to post some before and after pictures later this week. The floor guy came and took measurements last night and they’re going to start installing today! Can you believe that? And he said they might even be able to finish today too! How fantastic would that be? We we we so excited!

I brought him into this world, I can take him out!

Have you guys noticed how especially cocky and rude Adam has been lately? You know exactly what I’m talking about, right? Like this comment from yesterday for example. Okay great, I’m glad we’re on the same wavelength. Well the amazing Michelle M. made this and I’m glad she is able to properly portray who is who in this world:

And God said to Adam: “Checketh thyself before you wrecketh thyself!”

Hooray for low budget science fiction movies!

The car accident storyline could fall into cliché, but hopefully it doesn’t because otherwise this could totally be a great movie.

What is your favorite Easter candy?

April 22, 2011

Well I started off the week strong, but then I fizzled out. Normally I’m able to post tons when the parents are away, but this time I had to dogsit my sister Amanda’s dog Ralphie. And he’s quite, how can I put this delicately? Time consuming. So I apologize for the lack of posts in the later half of this week and even today. So here I just want to know what your favorite Easter candy is. Mine are those Reeses peanut butter eggs that are pretty much the size of real eggs and filled with so much oil peanut butter that you can feel your muffin top expanding over your waistband while you eat them. AKA: They are amazing! What’s yours?

Teach Me Something Tuesday – Why the Yellow Ranger Didn’t Have a Skirt

April 19, 2011
By

Due to my post last Friday regarding my love of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, I’ve been going back and reading up about it and watching loads of old clips. I’ve enjoyed seeing all the little things I had forgotten, like how the Green Ranger used to call the Dragonzord with his Dragon Dagger, which also doubled for a flute (for obvious reasons), and his fingers moving never matched up with the song that it played. I always noticed it as a kid, but it wasn’t until later that I found out it was because the show was spliced together with old footage (the costumed and zord battles mostly) from the Japanese show Super Sentai: Kyoryu Sentai Zyu Ranger. But in my recent digging, I stumbled upon this little fact that I thought you may find interesting. The Yellow Ranger from the Japanese version was a guy:

Yes, even his name was Boy. Which explains why in the American version of the show, the Pink Ranger had a little skirt, and the Yellow Ranger didn’t, even though they were both girls:

Also, Thuy Trang who played the original Yellow Ranger in the American series passed away in car accident at the age of 27 in 2001. Sad.

Now teach me something I don’t know!
