Teach Me Something Tuesday – Why the Yellow Ranger Didn’t Have a Skirt

Due to my post last Friday regarding my love of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, I’ve been going back and reading up about it and watching loads of old clips. I’ve enjoyed seeing all the little things I had forgotten, like how the Green Ranger used to call the Dragonzord with his Dragon Dagger, which also doubled for a flute (for obvious reasons), and his fingers moving never matched up with the song that it played. I always noticed it as a kid, but it wasn’t until later that I found out it was because the show was spliced together with old footage (the costumed and zord battles mostly) from the Japanese show Super Sentai: Kyoryu Sentai Zyu Ranger. But in my recent digging, I stumbled upon this little fact that I thought you may find interesting. The Yellow Ranger from the Japanese version was a guy:

Yes, even his name was Boy. Which explains why in the American version of the show, the Pink Ranger had a little skirt, and the Yellow Ranger didn’t, even though they were both girls:

Also, Thuy Trang who played the original Yellow Ranger in the American series passed away in car accident at the age of 27 in 2001. Sad.

Now teach me something I don’t know!

  1. Ah, how I DO like little Asian guys named Boy.

Teach you something you don’t already know? The Asian character on Star Trek Voyager, Ensign Harry Kim (played by the adorable Garret Wong) was almost replaced with a female character. The original actor for the part of the captain (some chick with a French name who I can’t even attempt to spell) dropped out shortly after filming started. And there was talk of replacing her with a male captain. Which would have meant, in Garrett’s mind, that he was gone, to be replaced with a female character. But, in the end, they made Captain Janeway and kept Ensign Kim as the eye candy on the bridge. Or so I read somewhere.

    HUGS….

  2. Geneviève Bujold, Polt. Sheesh! :) Google and copy-and-paste! :)

I love how the pink ranger has to stand all demurely with legs clamped shut while the yellow ranger is standing jauntily with legs spread apart. Yay 1950s era sexism!! :D

  3. Ya know, I just noticed that along with no skirt, Trini didn’t have much cleavage, which is understandable since she’s a boy. But I suppose it’s an even bigger shame that Kimberly doesn’t have much either.

    HUGS…

Huh. I never noticed that the yellow PR didn’t have a skirt.

  5. What an impressive piece of investigative reporting! ;)

I was totally unaware of this subtle nuance in the Power Ranger universe.
