Today is the Big Day

May 27, 2011
By

Well, last night was the last night I slept at my parents as a resident. Every night this week I’ve been moving over all my things little by little. Last night was the biggie, bringing over and setting up my television from my bedroom at home to my new bedroom and the remainder of my clothes. Tonight I just have a little bit here and there, and after a month and a day of homeownership, I’ll be spending my first night in my new home. I also went grocery shopping for the first time last night and dropped $300 on essentials. Like, if I have to spend that kind of money, I want it to be on things I want, not things I need! So annoying. Sigh, the perils of living out of the womb. I’m also taking suggestions for one person meals. I need to be good and actually cook, so please send me any tips or recipes that are handy for those of us living on our own.

Who is In Your Ideal Away Team?

I’m stealing this from Star Trek’s Facebook page, but tell me the three people you would want to take with you on a typical Star Trek away mission and why? No random red shirts allowed, they must be main characters from any Trek series. You can combine characters from multiple series.

I would go with Bones, because he’d be handy in a medical emergency and his razor sharp wit would provide welcome comic relief, Data, because he knows pretty much anything and everything in the known universe and is good in a fight (unless he has his emotion chip turned on), and Deanna Troi because she can help communicate with new species and I can offer her up as a sacrifice to their space volcano gods if things turn ugly.

Post your answers in the comments. Make it so!

Glee is scheduled to start at 9:00 PM tonight; however, it airs after the final performance episode of this season’s American Idol. Post your guesses as to when Glee will actually start tonight. The closest guess without going over will win a huge heaping of respect and admiration.

A Question Only a Mom Could Ask:

May 24, 2011

While listening to the Glee version of Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way”:

Mom: How come she’s allowed to say ‘oriental’ and you guys always yelled at me when I did?
Craig: Because she’s Lady Gaga. She can do whatever she wants.

Though I gotta admit, I wondered the same thing when I first heard the song.

My Wish for Glee

Lately I’ve been wishing Glee would take a note from Ugly Betty (the totally awesome show that everyone loved the first season then forgot about even though it stayed awesome for the remainder of its run) and get better at balancing humor, heart, and the occasional life’s lesson when my favorite reviewer said it way more perfectly than I ever could:

I complained about the preachiness of Kurt’s lines in “Prom Queen,” and later on, I was reminded by others of the fact that Ugly Betty had done the same plot – the gay boy is named prom queen – or homecoming, rather – by bullies. But, on Ugly Betty, the gay character, Justin, doesn’t run off crying before giving a long speech describing his emotions and the precise reasons behind them. Instead, we simply see a shot of him looking terribly hurt – which speaks volumes more than a speech would have – before he instantly brushes himself off, marches right to the stage, and accepts the award, to show the bullies they haven’t gotten to him, even though we know that he is laughing through his pain. It’s not only about being a bit more subtle. It’s also about respecting your audience and their intelligence, and about taking pride in your writing, and that is something that Glee has lost lately.

The writer’s need to stop preaching through Kurt. It’s getting pretty old, and I don’t want to get annoyed by my favorite character. And don’t even get me started on the funeral episode. Yes, I cried, but I felt cheap because I’m so easily manipulated.

The Painting is Complete!

My friend Jodi finished the painting this week! She has a little bit of touching up that she needs to do here and there, but other than that, it’s done! I’m going to start moving in this weekend. Here are the colors I settled on:

In the bedroom I went with Benjamin Moore’s Aventurine:

For the office study I chose Benjamin Moore’s Dinner Party:

And for the living area I picked Benjamin Moore’s Amulet:

The living room color is hard to capture, but it’s a really nice creamy yellow. Amanda said I should describe it as a really really really light mustard. So what do you guys think? I purposely chose pictures that feature the colors more than the space itself (though do you see that TV?!). I’ll give you guys a virtual tour once everything is in it’s proper place.
