Summer is the Time to Soak Up the Sun

September 1, 2011
By

Just kidding! Summer is the time to catch up on the televisions shows you missed in their original runs! I got a late start because of the move, but it started off with the first season of Popular. I hate to love and love to hate Glee, and people said this show by the same creator was great. Well, not so much. Surrounding moments of greatness were lots and lots of dreck. Maybe if the show was about Mary Cherry and nothing but Mary Cherry, I would love it, but since it wasn’t, I don’t. I still have the second season to get through (yeah, I still plan on watching it, I’m a completionist in the worst sense of the word), but I’m in no hurry.

Then it was onto Fringe! OMG I love Fringe. I started the first few episodes when it originally aired but gave up because it was too monster of the week and how many times could I hear Walter say “I worked on an experiment similar to this back in the seventies, now get me a root beer float!” Ugh. I hated Walter. But then I heard that by the end of the first season it increased it’s continuity and got a whole hell of a lot better, and that now it’s the greatest science fiction show on television. So I gave it another shot and fell in love immediately. Being able to plow through it on DVD made the monster of the week episodes much more tolerable, and I actually love Walter now! How crazy is that? The second season was amazing, and now I’m just waiting for the third season to come out on DVD so I can catch up in time for the fourth season to start at the end of the month.

While I’m waiting for Fringe, I’m watching Friday Night Lights. That’s right, yours truly is watching a show about football and loving it. Everyone kept telling me how amazing this show was but I refused to watch it because “it was just a stupid show about football”. But then I saw the first season on sale at Target for $9.99 and figured for that price I might as well give it a shot. And OMG it’s amazing! By the end of the first episode I was laughing, cheering, and crying. And then I’ve pretty much done that for every episode since. It’s so frakking good. I highly recommend it. I should have known it was amazing since the same friends and critics that support this show supported other amazing shows that no one else watched like Veronica Mars and Arrested Development. You live and you learn I guess.

So what shows are you guys catching up on now that you missed the first time around?

Who is In Your Ideal Away Team?

I’m stealing this from Star Trek’s Facebook page, but tell me the three people you would want to take with you on a typical Star Trek away mission and why? No random red shirts allowed, they must be main characters from any Trek series. You can combine characters from multiple series.

I would go with Bones, because he’d be handy in a medical emergency and his razor sharp wit would provide welcome comic relief, Data, because he knows pretty much anything and everything in the known universe and is good in a fight (unless he has his emotion chip turned on), and Deanna Troi because she can help communicate with new species and I can offer her up as a sacrifice to their space volcano gods if things turn ugly.

Post your answers in the comments. Make it so!

Glee is scheduled to start at 9:00 PM tonight; however, it airs after the final performance episode of this season’s American Idol. Post your guesses as to when Glee will actually start tonight. The closest guess without going over will win a huge heaping of respect and admiration.

My Wish for Glee

May 20, 2011
By

Lately I’ve been wishing Glee would take a note from Ugly Betty (the totally awesome show that everyone loved the first season then forgot about even though it stayed awesome for the remainder of its run) and get better at balancing humor, heart, and the occasional life’s lesson when my favorite reviewer said it way more perfectly than I ever could:

I complained about the preachiness of Kurt’s lines in “Prom Queen,” and later on, I was reminded by others of the fact that Ugly Betty had done the same plot – the gay boy is named prom queen – or homecoming, rather – by bullies. But, on Ugly Betty, the gay character, Justin, doesn’t run off crying before giving a long speech describing his emotions and the precise reasons behind them. Instead, we simply see a shot of him looking terribly hurt – which speaks volumes more than a speech would have – before he instantly brushes himself off, marches right to the stage, and accepts the award, to show the bullies they haven’t gotten to him, even though we know that he is laughing through his pain. It’s not only about being a bit more subtle. It’s also about respecting your audience and their intelligence, and about taking pride in your writing, and that is something that Glee has lost lately.

The writer’s need to stop preaching through Kurt. It’s getting pretty old, and I don’t want to get annoyed by my favorite character. And don’t even get me started on the funeral episode. Yes, I cried, but I felt cheap because I’m so easily manipulated.

Survivor Finale Rant

May 16, 2011
By

So obviously you should stop reading if you haven’t watched last night’s finale yet cause I’m gonna talk about who won. Okay, I get it. Boston Rob played an amazing game of Survivor. He pretty much did everything right. It was genius and perfect and he deserved the million dollar prize. But how come no one calls him out for being a complete douchebag during his private interviews? Like, by all means, it’s a freaking game, play as cut throat as you want! Blindside as many friends as you want! But why does he have to talk such shit during his confessionals? Why does he have to call everyone idiots and morons? And then at the reunion (ugh I hate the worthless reunions cause they never talk about what I want to talk about) after everyone has seen him say such horrible things about them behind their back while watching the show back home all season no one calls him out on it! They just all say what an awesome game he played! Yes he played an awesome game, but he talked so much shit about EVERYONE behind their backs! Someone please call him out on it! He shouldn’t be allowed to be sweet funny Boston Rob back at the reunion and laugh it off cause it’s “just a game” when he was so mean-spirited the entire time! Ugh, end rant.

Oh wait, one more thing! Did you guys notice how many freaking puzzles there were this season? And we all know how awesome Rob is at puzzles! Was there even a single swimming challenge? Normally they have to swim out and collect stuff and swim and swim and swim. There was hardly any of that! I think the producers used mostly puzzles to gear the game towards a Rob victory. Okay, end rant. Again.

Fairwell, No Ordinary Family

April 6, 2011

So the season finale of No Ordinary Family was on last night. Technically it’s not cancelled yet, but with the actors already signing up for new shows for next Fall, a renewal of the freshman show No Ordinary Family isn’t looking too good. Here’s an interesting article from Entertainment Weekly about how it went wrong, which I think hits the nail right on the head.

It started off well enough, and for about the first half of the season it was my favorite new show of the year (I believe that honor [and oh what an honor it is!] has now been given to Hawaii Five-0), but as the series continued, and more people with increasingly lame superpowers showed up, and the mysteriously intriguing ongoing storyline revealed itself to be quite ho hum, the quality of the show faded.

It still had the moments of brilliance that is displayed in the first half of the season (mostly doing with sidekicks Katie and George) but without a good storyline keeping us interested week to week, there was really no reason to stay invested in the show. I’m still sad it’s probably getting cancelled though. It was a really cute and fun show before someone decided to insert a half-hearted conspiracy into the mix. If they had been able to blend the comedy plots with the serious (and more interesting) storyline it may have faired a bit better.

Anyone else watch this show till the bitter end as I did?

Appointment Television Shows Through the Years

March 25, 2011
By

So I’m sure you all know that I watch a shit ton of television. I guess you can say I’ve loved television all my life. And even though I watch a ton of shows, there are a select few that can be considered appointment television. These are shows that you make sure your ass is parked in front of the television to make sure you don’t miss a second. Even today with DVRs, I still have shows I considered to be appointment television where I make sure I watch right away. The only difference is now I allow it to get ahead 20 minutes so I can fast forward through the commercials. Here’s a list of my appointment television shows through the years:

Transformers: My very first appointment television show. My Mom tells me that I first fell in love with Transformers when I was at a friend of the family’s house. They had a few of the toys and I was obsessed with one of them and kept turning it into a car, then back into a robot, then back into a car, over and over and over again. So obsessed was I, that they let me keep the toy and I brought it home. I mostly remember watching the show after school when I was in kindergarten and the first grade. At the time, cartoons ran from 3:00 to 5:00. But whenever a new show came out, they’d put it in the 4:30 slot and pushed everything earlier. I think by the time I discovered Transformers, it was already in the 3:00 slot so when the next new show came out, Transformers went bye bye.

DuckTales: Thankfully when Transformers left the afternoon airwaves, I fell in love with DuckTales. But the same thing happened when new (and totally inferior) shows like TailSpin and Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers came out, and pushed DuckTales out of their timeslot.

Darkwing Duck: But eventually Darkwing Duck came along and saved the day. I frakking loved this show. It combined my love of DuckTales with my dreams of becoming a non-superpowered crime fighter like Batman.

Unsolved Mysteries: This is a completely random one, but growing up, me and my family always gathered around the television on Wednesday nights to watch Unsolved Mysteries. We would watch Robert Stack tell us about all this crazy shit, and then try and come up with our own theories about what really happened during the commercial breaks.

Batman: The Animated Series: I’ve always loved Batman. From the Adam West show, to the Tim Burton movies. But Batman: The Animated Series presented the character of Batman to me in a whole new light. I loved the Tim Burton movies, but this was the first time I had seen the dark detective side of Batman. It was fun and dark and serious all wrapped up into glorious 30 minute nuggets. I remember being furious when I raced home to watch the latest episode and it was preempted by news of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Priorities people! They’re totally different when you’re a kid.

Mightly Morphin Power Rangers: Crappy dubbing and cheesy special effects be damned! To me this show was a live action Voltron, and what could be better than that? I was completely addicted and didn’t miss an episodes for years.

TGIF: Remember when they made sitcoms that families with kids could watch that wasn’t on the Disney Channel? Well TGIF was the ultimate source for such shows. Full House, Family Matters, Step By Step. The TGIF was solid awesome for several years with these core shows. I really think when these shows ended, so did the family friendly sitcom.

Seinfeld: This was the beginning of Must See TV and the golden age of NBC. So many great episodes and moments. “Is anyone here a marine biologist?!”

Friends: I’ll never forget the conversation at the lunch table after this show started. “Have you guys seen Friends? It’s so funny!” ‘What is it about?” “Uh…friends.” This was absolutely appointment television even when I went away to college, me and my friends would watch this on Thursday nights. Up until Chandler and Monica got married, I never missed a single episode. After that it started falling flat and my viewing habits became hit or miss.

ER: For some reason everyone in college loved going out on Thursdays (apparently they did not realize we still had class the next day), but I couldn’t be bothered because ER was on. I started watching it in high school but continued watching it religiously all through college. Sadly it overstayed it’s welcome (and Grey’s Anatomy came along) and I gave up just before the last season. I saved the series finale on my DVR for the longest time but couldn’t be bothered to watch it and I eventually just erased it.

Survivor: I didn’t start watching Survivor until about the fifth or sixth season, but once I started, I’ve been hooked ever since. I kinda feel like a loser whenever I mention watching Survivor to new friends or acquaintances but only because they fail to realize how awesome it continues to be.

Lost: I know there was a lot of buzz about this show before it came out, but for some reason I missed all of it, and was only told by a friend to watch it the day it aired. It was incredible and unlike anything else on television at the time. And if the first episodes didn’t confirm its status as appointment television, the fourth episode Walkabout certainly did. All through the ups and downs of this show over the years, I never missed a single episode.

Battlestar Galactica: Even though Battlestar Galactica technically came before Lost, I didn’t start watching religiously until the second season. As I’m sure you already know, I consider this to be the best show of all time. And even though this show ran on Friday nights, it didn’t stop me from making it appointment television. I love how SyFy and no qualms about running it’s biggest show on Fridays. What do nerds have to do on Fridays anyway?

Glee: As much fun as it is to make fun of Glee and complain about how awful it is (it isn’t really awful, but we Glee fans can be terribly dramatic) I’ve been completely addicted since it premiered its pilot episode in May and I spent the entire summer listening to Don’t Stop Believing until it came back. This show actually has two appointments. Appointment #1 is when I wake up Tuesday morning and download all the new music tracks, and Appointment #2 is when I actually watch the episode that night.

Vampire Diaries: Friends recommended I watch this show, but I couldn’t because it conflicted with other shows I watched on Thursdays and I couldn’t record it. It wasn’t until they had a marathon of the first ten episodes over their winter break that I started watching and I was completely addicted. The Office even got the boot from my Thursday recording schedule so I could watch this show live. Out of all the Thursday shows, this is the one that I have to watch that night.

What were your appointment television shows through the years?

Open Letter to The Dalton Academy Warblers

March 16, 2011
By

Dear Dalton Academy Warblers,

I hate you. I hate every scene your stupid group is in. And don’t even get me started on your stupid meetings, with your stupid rules, and your stupid gavel. I mean, seriously? And yeah, your stupid bird is was stupid too.

Thank god Kurt finally pointed out the ridiculousness of the Warblers just being a reason to showcase Blaine’s (undeniable) talent.

“Sometimes I don’t feel like we’re The Warblers. I feel like we’re Blaine and the Pips.”

“I know we need to practice du-wopping behind Blaine while he sings every solo in the medley of Pink songs.”

Okay fine, the Teenage Dream scene was pretty great and I may or may not have watched it a million times on YouTube, but everything after that has been the same stupid thing and has never even come close to reaching the same level of awesomeness as your first appearance. Your A&F models (and token chubby guy) singing and dancing around in silly uniforms has gotten way old.

Please note that my hatred of you as a whole has no impact on my adoration of Kurt and Blaine, and I can’t wait for them to leave you creepy weirdos behind and go back to McKinley High.

Sincerely,
Craig

Wise words from my Mom! In an e-mail exchange between some family members about Glee my Mom says: “I loved the way Kurt was a strong character, very self confident, and could walk down the hallway in a Lady Gaga outfit. And now you have to be kidding! The same with Santana!!!”
